I PERSPECTIVE CCMMANDING OFFICER, USS NIMITZ Captain Raymond Paul llg was born June 11 1938 in Lowell Massachusetts He entered the Naval Service in June 1956, attending the U.S Naval Academy in Annap olis, lvlaryland. Following his graduation and commissioning as an Ensign on June 8, 1960, he was assigned to Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida for Flight Training. He was desig- nated a Naval Aviator in January 1962. Captain llg's first assignment was with Attack Squadron ONE TWO FIVE, at Naval Air Station Lemoore, California for Fleet Replacement Training. On completion of his training, Captain Ilg joined with Attack Squadron TWENTY-TWO at Naval Air Station Lemoore and completed two Western Pacific deployments with that squadron in USS IVIIDWAY ICV 41 J. In October 1965, he was appointed Aide and Flag Lieutenant to Commander Carrier Division SEVEN. Captain Ilg was then assigned to the Naval Test Pilot School, Patuxent River, Maryland, from November 1966 through September 1967, and subsequently was assigned to the Flight Test Division through December 1969. After training as a fleet replacement pilot in the A-6 aircraft from January to October 1970, Captain Ilg was assigned to Attack Squadron SIXTY-FIVE. ln lvlay 1972, Captain Ilg was ordered to Attack Squadron FORTY-TWO, and served as Executive Officer until January 1973. Captain Ilg then re- ported to Attack Squadron ONE SEVEN SIX as Executive Officer in July 1973. I-le assumed command of Attack Squadron ONE SEVEN SIX in June 1974 and after a successful tour in which the squadron earned the Commander Naval Air Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet Battle Efficiency Captain llg was then ordered to Naval Nuclear Power School at Mare Island, Vallejo, California in October 1975. Upon completion of his nuclear power training, Captain Ilg reported to USS ENTERPRISE ICVN 655 as the Oper- ations Officer. I-le served as Executive Officer of USS EN- TERPRISE from April 1978 through August 1979. lVlost recently, Captain Ilg was Commanding Officer of USS WA- BASH IAOR 55 from January 10, 1980 to July 3, 1981. Captain lIg's personal decorations include: the Distin- guished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star, numerous Air lVled- als, the Navy Commendation lVIedalg the Purple I-leart, and the Combat Action Ribbon. Captain Ilg is married to the former Bonnie Shetley Thur- ber of Alta Loma, California, and they have two daughters, Tamara and Brenda. A Captain Ilg came aboard NIMITZ as Prospective Com- manding Officer in January 1982 and is due to relieve Cap- tain Batzler as Commanding Officer of NIMITZ in February 1982 while the ship is in port in Norfolk.
