Glasgow WS The Medical Department is composed of four Medical Officers, one Nurse Anesthetist, one Medical Service Corps Officer, one Physicians Assistant, and 37 Hospital Corps- men. To care for the medical needs of all embarked person- nel, NIMITZ has the most modern and complete sick bay facility of any warship. It includes a modern operating room, an intensive care unit, laboratories, x-ray room, pharmacy, treatment rooms, and a 67 bed hospital. Augmenting the central facility are five widely dispersed Battle Dressing Stations. The personnel of the Medical Department are a highly trained cadre of professionals, dedicated to providing the highest quality of health care. ln case of large-scale wartime battle injuries, every man on board NIMITZ also becomes an extension of the Medical Department through the use of First Aid skills developed during an intensive training pro- gram administered by the Medical Department. Medical also plays a large role in health maintenance through aggressive preventive medicine and a shipwide sanitation program. Annual physicals, immunizations, and sanitary inspections of heads, mess deck areas, and berth- ing compartments are conducted by the Medical Depart- ment to ensure the continued health of the crevv.
