X X T Aircraft elevators move airplanes to the Flight Deck for a dawn launch. Steering machinery moves huge rudders to turn NIMITZ into the wind. Pumps move water from one side of the ship to the other to make the Flight Deck level for aircraft movement. Lights are turned on to mark the deck edge. Main engines wind up and push NIMITZ at speeds required to make enough wind for the launch. Steam pro- pels a shuttle down the catapult track to launch an airplane. These are only a few of the services provided and sup- ported by the Engineering Department. Engineering De- partment's 500 man team consists of: Machinist's Mates and Boiler Technicians who distill fresh water, operate and maintain main engines and a plethora of auxiliary machinery that does everything from washing our clothes to refrigerating our foodg Hull Technicians who provide fire protection and serve as NIMITZ' plumbers and repairmeng Interior Communications Technicians who maintain vital 212 phone circuits and gyrocompasses by which to steers Electrician's Mates who supervise operation of electrical power generating equipment, control its distribution, and ensure proper operation of ventilation, lighting and numer- ous motors to operate equipment, Enginemen who maintain our boat engines so the crew can enjoy a visit ashore in a foreign port, and stand ready to operate emergency diesel generatorsg Machinery Fiepairmen who make repair parts for NIMITZ and her escortsg Yeomen who make sure the job is done only when the paperwork is completed. Engineering Department provides a broad range of ser- vices to help NlMlTZ fulfill her mission. From the depths of the ship where four powerful main engines propel NIMITZ at speed greater than 30 knots to the Flight Deck where IIQWS guide pilots in landings and take offs, over 500 men knovllfl as SNlPES make NIMITZ the living creature that she IS-
