SAFETY CDR LA- Mauney LCDR W.D. Largent MMC L.S. Rogers ABE1 JH. Jones HT1 S. Mauga BM1 CR, Stine ET2 K,L. Albright AO2 P,L. Massey YN2 W.S. Magahee YN3 EJ. Marshall The NIMITZ Safety Department is charged with two very important shipboard functions - establishing and adminis- tering the Safety and 3-M programs. Although the Safety Team is manned only with five safety inspectors, each has years of experience in various areas of shipboard work. They are tasked with conducting an aggressive command-wide safety program which includes developing positive attitudes of safety awareness in the minds of all crew members concerning the potential haz- ards of shipboard life. The team patrols the ship, identifying, documenting, and making recommendations to eliminate safety hazards. NIMITZ' Safety Department also is a very active contributor to the worldwide Navy Safety Program. The 3-M Team is the overall administrator of the Ship- board Planned Maintenance System and the Maintenance Data Collection System. In addition, 3-M's responsibilities include Ship Alteration management, coordination of tender and shipyard work packages, and assisting in the implementation of the Ship's Force Overhaul Management Systems. Sound PMS and PQS programs are the keys to safety. With fully trained personnel operating well maintained equipment, safety is a natural by-product. 189
