DEPARTMENT

Page 142 text:

Blue, Yellow, Green, Red, White, Purple ,... The various brightly colored jerseys of Air Department personnel serve to identify the diversified jobs they perform. Comprised primarily of-the Aviation Boatswain's Mate rating the 500 men in Air Department perform jobs as varied as the differ- ent colored jerseys. V-1 Division's blue and yellow shirts are responsible for all aircraft movements on the flight deck, man the deck edge elevators, and operate the various items of ground support equipment. The red shirts of crash and salvage are tasked with providing on-the-scene fire fighting services in the event of an aircraft crash. They also operate the crash crane fTillyj and other mobile and fixed fire fighting equip- ment. The green shirts of V-2 Division operate and maintain the four integrated steam catapults, five arresting gear engines' and the fresnel lens Optical Landing System. They are specialists in the demanding task of heavy machinery maintenance required to keep the aircraft launching and recovering. T The blue and yellow shirts of V-3 Division manage the Hangar Deck, providing aircraft movements, fire fighting and deck edge elevator operations. Since the Hangar Deck serves as the focal point for numerous outside activities and is used for the storage of much large equipment such as the ship's boats, ground support equipment pool and various spare parts, the Hangar Deck crew has its hands full each day providing orderly management to the seeming chaos. V-4 Division provides the grapes or purple shirts who operate and maintain the jet fuel system providing fuel for aircraft, boats, mobile equipment and even the ship's -auxil- iary boiler. Their work takes them from the tower on the O10 level all the way down to the massive pump rooms on the seventh deck ensuring that good clean fuel is always avail- able to meet all requirements. Coordinating all of these functions from the focal point in Primary Flight Control the Air Boss and Mini Boss, assisted by the V-O Division white shirts, control the aircraft on the deck and airborne planes within five miles of the ship follow- ing launch and just prior to recovery. The officers and men of NIMITZ Air Department take great pride in running the biggest and best floating airfield in the world. ra- ' '-Qig. ff 5- -:qs ,Lf 51.52 4-1:-Y-.V - --....g. . -J L! :A-.R
