This marked the occasion of the first nuclear surface ship allowed to visit the port in many years. ' Palma de Mallorca, pearl of the western Mediterra- nean , is believed by many NIMITZ sailors to be the best liberty port in the Med. Palma has picturesque shores ac- cented by majestic palm trees and castle topped cliffs. Magnificent old buildings line the streets, housing sidewalk cafes, fine craft shops, delightful restaurants and quaint little bars. Special Services set up tours to castles and caves, com- ic bullfights, Bar-B-Ques and other events. The tours through the restored castles, cathedrals and dark caves were trips into the past. From shop to shop varied products ranging from porce- lain and pearls to leather and lunch were on sale. The leather was hand tooled yet inexpensive. The porcelain and pearls were of finest quality. One of the best buys of all was the food. Meals ranged from lobster to pizza. While NIMITZ sailors enjoyed the luring sights and the hospitality of the people of Palma, some dignitaries and residents from the local area visited NIMITZ. NIMITZ is in high hopes of being able to return to Palma de Mallorca the next time in the Med. A qi?
