The aircraft of NllvllTZ are the ships's main line of offense and defense. There are nine squadrons attached to Air Wing 8 aboard NIMITZ, flying seven different types of air craft, each designed for a specific mission The Air Wing is aboard NIMITZ during all overseas deployments and for specific training cruises in waters near the United States At all other times it is based at the home air stations located at various parts of the country The F 14A Tomcat is the Navy s newest fighter interceptor The Tomcat is a two seat twin engine all weather aircraft capable of flying twice the speed of sound lt also features a variable sweep wing for increased maneuverability The Tomcat can carry long range Phoenix missiles in addition to Sparrow and Sidewinder mis siles Flying the F 14A from NIMITZ are Fighter Squadrons 41 and 84 based at Naval Air Station Oceana Virginia The A 7E Corsair II is a single engine jet light attack strike bomber and close air support aircraft. The A-7E is flown by a single pilot and is capable of carrying air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles general purpose bombs and a Vulcan MK-61-Al 20 mm cannon. The jet uses a sophisticated digital computer for both weapons delivery and navigation. Flown by a crew of two and powered by two jet engines, the A-6E is equipped with a sophisticated weapons system and can carry five 2,000 pound general purpose bombs or a maximum of twenty-eight 500 pound bombs. The A-6E is flown from NIMITZ by Attack Squadron 35, the Navy's oldest attack squadron, based at Naval Air Station, Oceana, Virginia. This squadron also flies the KA-6D model of the Intruder, which is a tanker version used for in-flight refueling.
