Q :rf 00D UNDERWAY... A BIG SHIP, A BIG JDB Traditionally, the Officer of the Deck on a U. S. Naval ship is the most important officer in authority after the Commanding Officer and the Executive Officer. The OOD has the authority to act in many areas for the Commanding Officer in his absence. The NllvllTZ OOD's accept the responsibility for a billion dollar ship, a crew of about 5,000 and more than 80 aircraft, eagerly and confidently . . . it's a big job to say the least. OOD's must complete a rigorous and lengthy training program covering the many facets of naval operations: navigation, shiphandling, communications, tac- tics, rules of the road, and meteorology. All these subjects must be mastered. The period involved for a junior officer to become a qualified OOD underway may be expected to take up to nine months. Throughout the cruise in the Mediterranean, the NIIVIITZ OOD's remained vigilant, technically competent, and professional in ex- ecuting their duties. .. '.-, V T. An aircraft carrier is like a floating city in many ways. For example NIMITZ has its own fire department . . . it is called the NUCLEUS FIRE PARTY and it is made up from ship's company personnel, who are highly trained and strictly volunteers. Pros from the word Go , eighteen l-lull Techni- cians, one Corpsman, and one Gunner's Mate form this important professional unit that has the responsibility of responding quickly and efficiently to shipboard fires or flooding. The NIMITZ team is thoroughly trained in all aspects of safety and in the different types of fires. Placement on the team calls for completion of Special Repair Party training by all volunteers, who are then screened by the ship's Fire Marshal. ,PU M955 DAD Fire, fire, class Alpha fire in compartment Nucleus Fire Party Pro- - -vlde!
