The four NIMITZ helicopters come from the oldest helo squadron in the Navy, HC-2 out of NAS Jacksonville, Florida. The SH-3G Sea Kings are flown and maintained by 13 officers and 59 enlisted men. The Det's first and foremost job is to provide NIMITZ and her task group a search and rescue platform in case of man overboard or down aircraft. The helo's unique ability to carry large amounts of cargo and passengers, and to hover and land in con- fined areas is an additional capability. HC-2 aircrews logged more time than any other squadron on the ship, flying much of their time in port. The Angels carried many VlPS , including the King of Spain and the Secretary of the Navy, while transporting assorted cargo ranging from chocolate milk to the most important cargo of all F mail from home. 260
