Aifcivi william B. white, Jr. Master Chief Petty Officer of the Command Master Chief Petty Officer White joined NIMITZ as a member of the Precommissioning Unit in March, 1973. He was appointed Master Chief Petty Officer of the Command in August, 1976. Master Chief White began his Navy career in May 1956. Follow- ing Recruit Training, he attended Airman P School at Norman, Oklahoma, then proceeded through Aircraft Reciprocating Engine A School at NATTC, Memphis. He returned to Memphis later in his career to attend Aircraft Jet Engine B School. Master Chief White has served with Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadrons ONE, THREE, and SEVENQ Utility Squadron ONE, and Training Squadron TWENTY-FOUR. He has moved from Key West, Florida, to Texas, Hawaii, and Norfolk in pursuing his duties, and has deployed aboard the carriers TARAWA, VALLEY FORGE, LEYTE, WASP, INTREPID, RANDOLPH, LAKE CHAMPLAIN, and LEXINGTON, in addition to his present assignment on NIMITZ. Master Chief White graduated from the Naval Air Training Com- mand Chief Petty Officer Academy at Pensacola and was an ln- structor!Technical Coordinator with the Naval Air Maintenance Training Group Headquarters at NAS Memphis before reporting to NlMlTZ. Master Chief White is married to the former Barbara S H ' . amilton of Memphis, Tennessee. They have one son and reside in Norfolk, Virginia. 20

Commander Richard L. Martin was born in Utica, Ohio, in 1937. He graduated from high school in Granville, Ohio, in 1955, and from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1959. ln December 1961, Commander Martin reported to VF-191 at NAS Miramar, Cali- fornia, after completing flight training and F8 CRUSADER training. Operating from the USS BON HOMME RICHARD QCVA-311 in the Western Pacific, he served as Line Officer, Maintenance Control Officer and Maintenance Officer. Following his initial four-year tour as a fighter pilot, Commander Martin studied physics at the U. S. Navel Post Graduate School in Monterey, California, and also completed NASA astronaut screening. He next served as an instructor with VF-124 while working simultaneously on a PhD in Mathematics at the University of California in San Diego. l ln December 1969, Commander Martin reported to VF-162 at NAS Miramar and 1 from there deployed with the squadron 5 to Southeast Asia aboard the USS i SHANGRI-LA CCVA-385. During this l time he served as Squadron Operations Officer and Executive Officer. Commander Martin was reassigned in March 1971 to serve as director of a portion of the F-14 TOMCAT Fleet Introduction Cadre at NAS Miramar. He later became the first Commanding Officer of VF-2, one fo the first two operational F-14 squadrons, leading the squadron from its establishment in October 1972 until February 1974. During the latter months the squadron operated with Carrier Air Wing 14 aboard USS ENTERPRISE CCVN-657. Commander Martin next joined the staff of Fighter Airborne Early Warning Wing Pacific at NAS Miramar as F-14 Special Projects Officer while awaiting command of VF-124, the F-14 Readiness Squadron. Instead of reporting to VF-124, however, he was reassigned to Nuclear Power Training in October 1974 and from there to NIMITZ on April 7, 1976. A Commander Martin has made three combat cruises to Southeast Asia and flown every operational model of the F8 CRUSADER . He was the 28th pilot to exceed 2,000 hours in the F8, while making 550 carrier landings. Additionally, he was one of the first pilots to fly an F-14 TOMCAT aircraft. Commander Martin's awards include Air Medals, Meritorious Service Medals, a Meritorious Unit Citation, and various Campaign and Service Medals. He is married to the former Margaret Dunbar of Pensacola, Florida. Commander Martin assumed his duties as Executive Officer of ,f NIMITZ on May 4, 1976. l l 4 l 19
