Captain James l-l Mauldin served as Ex ecutive Officer of NIMITZ from December 1972 to May 4 1976 Prior to reporting to NIMITZ the Captain completed Nuclear Power Training in New York and Washington D C Captain Mauldin graduated from Georgia Tech University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1953 and a Master of Science Degree in Physics in 1955 Following gradu ation he was commissioned an Ensign and underwent Navy flight training in Pensacola Florida and Corpus Christi Texas From September 1956 until August 1959 the Captain served as a pilot and administrative officer with Attack Squadron Tl-llFtTY-FIVE at the Naval Air Station Jacksonville Florida. ln September 1959 and until June 1963 Captain Mauldin attended the California lnsti- tute of Technology where he earned a Master of Science Degree and the Degree of Aero- nautical Engineer. In July 1963 he attended the Safety School at the University of California and reported to Attack Squadron FOFiTY- FOUP at Cecil Field Jacksonville Florida in September 1963. ln March 1964 the Captain reported to Attack Squadron THIPTY-FOUFR and from March 1966 until March 1968 served in the aircraft carrier SAFRATOGA as the aircraft handling officer. Following a tour 1 in Washington D,C. with the Center for Naval Analysis he reported to the 1 Naval Air Station Lemoore California for duty with Attack Squadron ONE HUNDRED TVVENTY-TVVO as a replacement pilot with Attack Squadron ONE l-IUNDFKED FIFTY-FIVE as Executive Officer and later as Commanding Officer. In July 1971 he began Nuclear Power Training at the Nuclear Power School Vallejo California. During his 20 years service Captain Mauldin has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Captain Richard T. Oaskill was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1932. He graduated from Marshall High School in Marshall, Texas, in 1948 and then attended Texas A St M University for two years before entering the U.S. Naval Academy. He graduated from the Academy in 1954 and entered flight training shortly thereafter. Captain Oaskill has served as an attack pilot with VA-15 and VA-12 aboard the carrier USS FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT QCVA-421 and as an instructor with VA-44 at NAS Cecil Field, Florida. While with VA-44 in 1962, he won the All-Navy tennis singles championship. Other duty stations have included a tour as Aide and Flag Lieutenant to Commander Carrier Division TWO aboard USS INDEPENDENCE QCVA-621 and as Weapons Officer on the staff of Commander, Fleet Air Mediterranean in Naples, Italy. Captain Oaskill received his Master of Arts Degree in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley in June 1965, after eighteen months of graduate study there. In January 1967, Captain Oaskill reported to VA-22 at NAS Lemoore, California. He subsequently served as Operations Officer, Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of the Fighting Redcocks , deploying to Southeast Asia aboard USS RANGER CCVA-613 and USS BON HOMME RICHARD QCVA-311. During this period, he flew more than 200 combat missions. in November 1969, Captain Oaskill joined the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, working in the Arms Control Branch of the Politico-Military Policy Division. One year later, he entered the Nuclear Power Training Program, attending schools in Bainbridge, Maryland and West Milton, New York. He also served briefly in the Division of Naval Reactors in Washington, D.C. before reporting to USS ENTERPRISE QCVN-651 where he served as Executive Officer from May 1972 until December 1973. From USS ENTERPRISE, Captain Oaskill again joined the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, serving as a member of the CNO Executive Panel Staff until reporting to USS CONCORD QAFS-57 as Commanding Officer in October 1974. After serving in CONCORD for 13 months, Captain Oaskill again served briefly in the Division of Naval Reactors in Washington, D.C. Captain Oaskill's combat awards include two Bronze Stars, 22 Air Medals, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, the Vietnam Honor Medal, two Vietnam Oallantry Crosses, and various campaign and service ribbons. Captain Oaskill is married to the former Diane Annette Chachere of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He resides in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with his wife and three children, David, 16, Debra, 15, and Danny, 10. 17

Commander Richard L. Martin was born in Utica, Ohio, in 1937. He graduated from high school in Granville, Ohio, in 1955, and from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1959. ln December 1961, Commander Martin reported to VF-191 at NAS Miramar, Cali- fornia, after completing flight training and F8 CRUSADER training. Operating from the USS BON HOMME RICHARD QCVA-311 in the Western Pacific, he served as Line Officer, Maintenance Control Officer and Maintenance Officer. Following his initial four-year tour as a fighter pilot, Commander Martin studied physics at the U. S. Navel Post Graduate School in Monterey, California, and also completed NASA astronaut screening. He next served as an instructor with VF-124 while working simultaneously on a PhD in Mathematics at the University of California in San Diego. l ln December 1969, Commander Martin reported to VF-162 at NAS Miramar and 1 from there deployed with the squadron 5 to Southeast Asia aboard the USS i SHANGRI-LA CCVA-385. During this l time he served as Squadron Operations Officer and Executive Officer. Commander Martin was reassigned in March 1971 to serve as director of a portion of the F-14 TOMCAT Fleet Introduction Cadre at NAS Miramar. He later became the first Commanding Officer of VF-2, one fo the first two operational F-14 squadrons, leading the squadron from its establishment in October 1972 until February 1974. During the latter months the squadron operated with Carrier Air Wing 14 aboard USS ENTERPRISE CCVN-657. Commander Martin next joined the staff of Fighter Airborne Early Warning Wing Pacific at NAS Miramar as F-14 Special Projects Officer while awaiting command of VF-124, the F-14 Readiness Squadron. Instead of reporting to VF-124, however, he was reassigned to Nuclear Power Training in October 1974 and from there to NIMITZ on April 7, 1976. A Commander Martin has made three combat cruises to Southeast Asia and flown every operational model of the F8 CRUSADER . He was the 28th pilot to exceed 2,000 hours in the F8, while making 550 carrier landings. Additionally, he was one of the first pilots to fly an F-14 TOMCAT aircraft. Commander Martin's awards include Air Medals, Meritorious Service Medals, a Meritorious Unit Citation, and various Campaign and Service Medals. He is married to the former Margaret Dunbar of Pensacola, Florida. Commander Martin assumed his duties as Executive Officer of ,f NIMITZ on May 4, 1976. l l 4 l 19
