W' Captain Bryan W. Compton, Jr. was born in San Angelo, Texas, in 1928. He was grad- uated from Demopolis High School, in Demopolis, Ala- bama, in 1945 and the U.S. Naval Academy in June 1951. His first duty assignment was with the escort carrier SlClLY, deployed in the waters off Korea. Following his assignment to the SICILY, Captain Compton et attended flight training and earned his wings as a naval aviator in May 1953. His first assignment as an aviator was with Support Squadron 27, fly- ing the Grumman Guardian from the flight decks of the air- craft carriers KULA GULF, LEYTE GULF, and ANTIETAM. ln February 1955, he report- ed to Attack Squadron 35 stat- ioned at Cecil Field, Florida. ln VA-35, operating from the aircraft carrier TICONDEROGA and flying the Skyraider , Captain Compton served as Land ing Signal Officer and Flight Officer. Following an assignment at the Naval Academy as an in- structor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and as a student in jet transitional train- ing at Olathe, Kansas, the Captain tthen Lieutenantl was assigned to Attack Squadron 66 where he flew the A4D Skyhawk at Oceana, Virginia, and from the deck of the carrier lNTREPlD. He was then as- signed to the U.S. Naval Post- graduate School, Monterey, California, as a student. From July 1963 to December 1965, Captain Compton served as Ordnance Officer in the nuclear powered carrier ENTERPRISE. After a brief tour with Attack Squadron 44 and as Executive Officer in Attack Squadron 66 aboard the aircraft carrier AMERICA, he reported to Attack Squadron 163 as Executive Officer and later as Commanding Officer, serving in the carrier ORISKANY. During this latter tour, he won the Navy Cross, five Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Bronze Star, five Air Medals and two Navy Commendation Medals. ln 1968 and 1969, Captain Compton attended the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island. After graduation, he was assigned as Aircraft Projects Officer, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and then underwent nuclear power training at Mare Island, California and Idaho Falls, Idaho. Degrees the Captain has earned are an Associate of Science Degree from Marion Military Institute, located in his native state of Alabama, Bachelor of Science Degree from the Naval Academy, and a Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California. Prior to being assigned as the Commanding Officer of the NIMITZ, Captain Compton was the Commanding Officer of the Attack Cargo Ship El Paso. On 21 August 1976, Captain Compton was relieved as Commanding Officer of NIMITZ and assumed the rank of Rear Admiral. ' Admiral Compton is married to the former Mary Taylor, of Huntsville, Alabama. He resides in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with his wife and four children, Bryan W. lll, 185 Mary, 17, David, 15, and Eleanor, 12. 13
