Nimitz Facts USS NIMITZ is the largest warship ever built, she displaces 95,000 tons with a combat load and her flight deck is longer than three football fields. Accomodations aboard NIMITZ total over 6 000 With a ship this size go the problems of logistics, distilling fresh water, feeding the huge crew and many bther services needed by a modern warship. Feeding the crew, when all 6,000 are aboard, can be a very expensive and massive job. When the galley in NIMITZ if fully operational, it serves over 18,000 hot meals per day. Over a month,s time a crew of about 6 000 ll wi consume in the neighborhood of 30,000 dozen eggs, 360,000 pancakes and well over 81,000 pounds of rheat. This is in addition to the enormous amounts of fruit, vegetables, flour and milk it takes to make a well balanced Navy meal. NIMITZ can carry provisions for 90 continuous days and can load 200 tons of su l' ' h pp ies in an our. The evaporators have the ability to distill 400,000 gallons of fresh water daily. Th S l D ' ' ' e upp y epartment carries over 120,000 items from soap to aircraft engines. The monetary value of all these items is over354,000,000. Each payday Disbursing pays out more than 8450,000. in salaries. The tw0 monthly paydays, combined with an extra 8200,000. disbursed over the month for travel claims, TAD orders, etc., totals over 81,000,000 disbursed monthly. In order to anchor the 95,000 ton ship it takes two 60,000 pound anchors each attached to the ship by cl 684 link chain. Each link of the chain weighs 365 pounds for a total of' 249,000 pounds per chain. The grand total of the two anchors is approximately 620,000 pounds, or 31 tons! When NIMITZ is tied to a pier it takes I2 lines with each li b ' 600 , ne eing feet in length to tie her up. Six hundred seventy two gallons of grey paint and 104 gallons of black paint are used to paint out the approximately 194,000 square feet on NIMITZ from the flight deck to the water line. Probably the most important statistic of NIMITZ is that, because of nuclear power, she can, under normal operating circumstances, operate for 13 years without refueling the core of her reactors. Because NIMITZ doesn't require any conventional fuel, the space normally used for fuel by aircraft carriers can be used for aircraft fuel. This extra amount of fuel will allow NIMITZ to run flight operations for 16 continuous days.
