VA -86' Attach Squadron EICHTY-SIX was originally commissionedas Fighter Squadron 921 at NAS St. Louis during the Korean War in February 1951. In February 1953, the squadron was redesignated VF-84 while deployed to Guantanamo Bay aboard USS ANTIETAM. During fuly 1955, the squadron was again redesignated, this time as VA-86, the Sidewinders,'. When originally commissioned, the squad- ron was'flying F4U Corsairs . In fune 1953, the squadron commenced transition training to the F817-2 BearcatH, in prepa- ration for the F917-5 Panther which was assigned in November 1952. In April 1955, the squadron began transitioning to the F7U-3M Cutlass , Following extensive evaluation worlc withthe Sparrow I missile, VA-86, began to retire their Cutlasses', in return for the A-4D-Z '7Shyhawlf , the first pf which was received on 10 May 1957. fter almost ten years in the ShyhawIc,' VA-86 began transition training to the new A7A Corsair IIN in March 1967 and became the first fleet operational squadron of A7's on 1 fune 1967. D Throughout its history, VA-86 has made numerous deployments to the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas, and to Southeast Asia. The squadron has served aboard various air- craft carriers, including USS ANTIETAM, BENNINGTON, FORRESTAL, LAKE CHAMPLAIN, RANDOLPH, LEXINGTON, INTREPID, INDEPENDENCE, AMERICA, CORAL SEA and NIMITZ.
