L VF3l The Tomcatters, tale commences on 1 .luly 1935 with the commissioning of VF-1B, which ranhs Fighting 31 as the second oldest fighter squadron and the fourth oldest squadron of any type now operating in the U.S. Navy. As World War ll approached, the squadron designation was changed to VF-6, and reformed as VF-3 on 15 July 1943. On 15 November 1946 the squadron was redesignated VF-3A, and be- came Fighter Squadron Thirty One on 7 August 1948 The Naval Air Station Cecil Field at fack- sonville, Florida became the Tomcatters7 home in 1953. In the same year, Fighting Thirty One became the first all weather jet squadron in the Atlantic Fleet, flying the F211 Banshee. VF-31 has served aboard-various aircraft carriers, among which are USS ENTERPRISE, USS HORNET, USS LEXINGTON, USS LEYTE, USS YURKTUWN, and. USS SARA TOCA. Fighting Thirty One aircraft and personnel joined the USS N1M1TZfAttach Carrier Air Wing Eight team in the summer of 1975 in support of Northern European operations. CDR W..
