R VAH-.9 Reconnaissance Attach Squadron NINE was commissioned as Composite Squadron NINE KVC-91 on I5 fanuary 1953. With sixty officers and men, two TBM Avengers and a PZV Neptune, VC-9 began operations at the U.S. Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Sanford, Florida. The squadron deployed to Port Lyautey in April -1954, operating from USS CORAL SEA, USS MIDWAY, and USS RANDOLPH. Composite Squadron NINE was re-des- ignated Heavy Attach Squadron NINE KVAH-92 in November 1955. The squadron's second Mediterranean deployment was aboard USS TICONDEROGA. VAH-9 received its first A3D Skywarrior on 24 Ianuary 1957. In April the '4Hoot Owlsnflew thefirstA3D across the Atlantic. In fune 1957 the squadron logged one of many Ufirstsn when a VAH-9 A3D launched from USS BON IIOMME RICHARD inthe Pacific for a non-stop flight to USS SARA- TOCA off the Florida coast. Upon landing aboard, the crew was greeted by President Eisenhower. Heavy Nine flew the A3D for eight years, making six deployments aboard USS SARATOCA with the SIXTH Fleet in the Mediterranean. With the switch from the A3D to the RA5C Vigilante in the fall of 1963, the squadron designation became Reconnais- sance Attach Squadron NINE KRVAH-92. As RVAH-9, the squadron has ,made two WestPac cruises aboard USS RANGER, four Mediterranean deployments aboard USS SARATOGA, one Med deployment aboard USS FORRESTAL and one aboard USS INDEPENDENCE.
