CDR B. S. SIMONTON Reactor Officer Reactor Department operates and maintains the reactors which provide power for propulsion and electrical power on the ship. The department is manned by personnel in the traditional rates, who have received training in both operation and theory of nuclear power. Each man must know all the parts of the reactor and how all jobs in the department relate to each other. Electronics Technicians in Reactor are basically concerned with the operation and mainte- nance of the reactor controls and instruments. Personnel in Reactor operate and maintain the hydraulic, piping, valve and other mechanical systems in the power plant. Electricians in the department assure the reactor has sufficient power E0 operate. They divert and control power from the Sl1ip7s generator to the reactor on NIMITZ. There is also a laboratory section in the department which assures that the water supply used for cooling the reactor is free from corrosive minerals which could cause a malfunction in the system. The self reliance, mobility and freedom from fueling stops are part of what makes NIMITZ such 11 valuable weapon in our national defense. Reactor Department s 5 1 W E ,
