MATHEMATICS The queen of the sciences offers the students of Niles West the importance of precision and reasoning. Niles West was the first school of the three high schools to conduct classes in analytic geometry and calculus. This was done on an experiemental basis for students who had done well in advanced algebra and trigonometry classes. The mathematics programs have been revised in an ever constant effort to present the students with challenging and reliable programs. ■■ ' i ' .i :-i ' ' j5iS? K. Luscombe and J. Cartwright study various relationships in political science. SOCIAL STUDIES The social studies classes at Nlles West are not just a presentation of collected facts, but a penetrating look into the complex higtory of man and civilization. Spirited and lively class discussions give the student the opportunity to express opinions and draw conclusions. They are constantly urged to evaluate and reevaluate that which -they have studied. Paperback books have been made available to them so that they might further increase their knowledge in this area of study. Class discussion is geared toward expressing individual opinion.

SCIENCE Future Scientists Publish Atoms, Probe Into Unkown The Science Department at Niles West hopes to arouse curiousity, uiterest, and encourage logical thinking in its students. Through the use of the laboratory facilities, students rediscover facts and learn how to apply them. As scientific progress moves so rapidly, it is a challenge to keep abreast of current discoveries. This year, stu- dents exchanged and found ideas in Atoms, a West students ' science publication. The Science and Industrial Arts Departments also combined to design and make go- carts .
