Social Studies The two major goals of the Social Studies Department are to encourage students to think and reason with maturity and to be- come responsible adults. In order to achieve these goals, the department offers not only history courses, from which students may learn from the past how to cope with today's problems, but also courses in Family Living, Psychology, and Sociology, which help stu- dents to understand others and to be more compatible. Non-Western Civilizations and United States History are offered on the basic, regular, and honors levels. In addition, Ad- vanced Placement American History and Euro- pean History courses make it possible for some juniors ond seniors to receive college creditfor their high school work. Additional courses offer- ed in this area are World History, Economics, Latin American History, and Political Science. is

Foreign Language It is vital for a student in this rapidly shrinking world of the twentieth century to learn the language of another country. Therefore, the teaching methods of the Foreign Language Department are in a period of transition from a traditional grammar method, preparing a student for reading foreign literature, to an audio-lingual, conversational method, stressing communication through comprehension and pronun- ciation. In each of the school's four halls is a modern language laboratory where each foreign language student is provided with a microphone and earphones so that he can practice listening and responding. The department offers courses in French, Latin, Span- ish, German, and Russian. Becouse of this diverse selection, a student has an opportunity to become proficient in one of the major languages of the world. 16
