Judy Dreyfuss reoches for a book of modern poetry. English To teach the student to understand and communicate effectively in his native tongue is the primary pur- pose of the English Department. Through reading and discussing literature, the student comes to understand the ideas of great writers. English classes in all four years, as well as classes in English literature and drama, attempt to give the student a background in the forms of literature-essay, poetry, drama, short story, and novel. Through his reoding, the student is mode aware of the different forms which his own communication can take. Study of grammar, vocabu- lary, and rhetoric teach him the structure he must use to build his thoughts into intelligible messages. Guided by his teachers, he attempts to achieve clarity and conciseness in his writing and speaking. The bond of ovthority points out a few deficiencies in Steve Benjamin's theme 13
