These students concentrate before answering the difficult test questions on the Civil War. al Studies tours the societies of the world. This student listens carefully to the history lecture to make sure he gets accurate notes.

Russian Club members discuss the history, customs, and culture of Russia. The officers are; left to right, Sam Yanes (treasurer), Ken Seeskin (secretary), Lynn Epstein (vice-president), and Paul Rest (president). Spanish Club members, led by Mexican folksinger Mr. Antonio Perrusquia, sing popular Spanish songs. The foreign language clubs at Niles East are extra-curricular supplements to the French, German, Spanish and Russianclasses. Students learn the customs and culture of various countries from clubfilms, guestspeak- ers, and special events. This year French Club instituted a progressive,official, studentnews- paper. German and Spanish Club parties brought Christmas as it is celebrated in for¬ eign countries to Niles. Spanish Club also had a fall and spring banquet that enabled its members to sample several Spanish dishes. The activities instituted by the foreign language clubs increased the students ' under¬ standing of foreign peoples and cultures.

These boys use library facilities to compile information for their history term papers. This year the main goal of the Social Studies Department was to divide all courses into ability groups. This plan was carried out with Honors programs in Non-Western Ci¬ vilizations, World History, and United States History. Juniors and Seniors who wanted college credit for their work in history were able to take APP American and European History. In this program, the students had the opportunity to pe rform individual research projects and to attend many out-of-school conferences. Field trips became an impor¬ tant part of this year ' s curriculum. Classes were taken to visit such places as the Orien¬ tal Institute and the Newberry Library. Social studies classes utilized materials from AVA. This year, programmed learning was introduced into the Social Studies De¬ partment. Under this process, the teachers made their own filmstrips concerning their respective subjects. In the extra-curricular level, the International Relations Club was formed for students interested in current events. Guest speakers and reports given by members acquainted the club with im¬ portant world situations. International Relations Club, whose subject is the modern world, is handled by David McQueen (presi¬ dent), Brad Ellison (vice-president), Joel Goldman (parliamentarian), and Joanne Sonn (secretary).
