Communication. . . English stimulates creativity The Reading Lab helps this Nilehi student to increase her speed and comprehension. The English Department concentrates on developing students ' writing skills, grammar, and appreciation of literature. This year in addition to the regular Freshman, Sopho¬ more, Junior, and Senior English courses, an experimental class in American Literature was offered to the Sophomores, and a seventh period English Seminar was held for those Seniors taking Honors English. English Semi¬ nar was a voluntary course aimed at under¬ standing literature as a part of the humani¬ ties. A main goal of this course was to allow the students to pick a subject and have them do extensive reading and writing about it. Courses in Public Speaking and Journalism were offered to teach students proper spoken and written expression. The Reading Lab has been more widely used this year. With its new equipment, the Lab can more effectively assist the students in improving their speed and comprehension. Using principleslearned from the study of English, Nilehi ' s Debate Team successfully presented its material in the many contests it entered. Thus, the variety of courses offered in this year ' s English cur¬ riculum gave students a chance to study diff¬ erent methods of communicating ideas.
