You know, it seems just yesterday that we were roaming the halls of Old McKinley. Now our children are enjoying the wide, spacious cor- ridors of Niles' new high school. I remember how we wished we had the opportunity to attend a lovely school as this one. Well. let's not stand here thinking wishfully: on to renew old friendships. FBE1B Connie Alvino She's peppy. gay, and full of fun: on friendly terms with every- one. Mary lane Annuzzi A friend of all. a foe of none, girls like her don't often come. Lucille Babb Happy as cr bird am l, I've ne'er a moment to frown or sigh. Rita Babash So with the world her gentle ways, shall be an endless theme of praise. Marilyn Baker 'Tis the loveliest hair in the world, my lriend. Carol Barber A sparkling smile-a twinkling eye greet us when she passes by. Robert Bauman He leans not on others but on him- self. Hugh Blakley A good sport both in sports and everyday life. Gloria Blase Whatever is worth doing at all. is worth doing well. CLASS PROPHECY As we enter the gates of knowledge, our feet sink in lush crimson carpets: our eyes wander from side to side and finally rest on a golden plaque which reads Remember the Class of '55. One of the many hostesses employed by the Board of Education directs us to the Grille which lzas now been established for the purpose of giving students a pickup for the next class. Behind the counter are Lucille Babb and Rita Babbish who volunteer their services to supply students with that get up and go . lust as we start to down a cherry smash, we are tapped on the shoulder and a bright flash blinds us, It's Jian Bellitt, who has been selected by the reunion committee to snap the informal shots of our classmates. He points out Mary lane Annuzzi and Connie Alvino, who are the proud owners of a Paris Fashion Salon. Entering for a smash we see live people in white coats. Oh, oh I guess this is it! What a relief! It's only Bob Bauman, Marilyn Baker, Hugh Blaklcy, Carol Barber and Gloria Blase, who run the 5B clinic, which is situated on the ground floor to aid students for what ails them. PAGE I9 L... V 'Mx CLASS PROPHECY Marlene Blicka acts as our guide to show us this super duper Brain Factory. We decide to take the escalator to the sixth floor and begin our tour where all activities are held. As we approach it. we hear the melodious refrains sung by Hot Canary , alias Virginia Bleakley, and Lungs Bowker, who, in our days. was known as just plain Robert . Hurrying around making preparations for the evening's TV performance are Director Al Boser and Wardrobe mistress Ianet Bon- ham. After being flagged out of the room we peal over to the next room which sounds like the Indianapolis Speedway. which is just what it is. Zooming around the track are such aces as Al Bold, Dick Bonacker, and Tom Bradley. Next we enter the huge ballroom where the acts of the Variety Show for the afternoon program are rehearsing. Looking over the line-up we see Toes Brooks, who is munching a hunk of celery to keep her weight down for her ballet dancing. Lounging on the sofa, resting for her performance is Martha Braun, the great dramatic star. PAGE 2D Virginia Bleakley No gems, no gold she needs to wear, she shines intrinsically fair. Albert Bold The man that loves and laughs must surely do well. Richard Bonacker He hath borne himself beyond the promise of his age, doing, in the figure of a lamb, the feats of a lion. lanet Bonam Always smiling, always gay, fun and loving in every way. Allen Boser Rushing here rushing there: what a busy boy. Robert Bowker A man polished to the nail. Thomas Bradley Be merry, if you are wise. Martha Braun Few persons have courage enough to appear as good as they really are. Ann Louise Brooks The dimple the chin contains has beauty in its rounds. Ioseph Brown Deep are the thoughts of a silent man. Richard Bundy Heedless of the crowd's sway. he pursues his quiet way. Kalina Callow Small is she, but wise: a terror for her size. Walter Campbell 'Tis the mind that makes the body rich. Loretta Caruso Nothing common can seem worthy ot you. Catherine Casewell Thy voice is a celestial melody. Eugene Chieilo He has moved a little closer, to the master of all music. Carol Chiody She was born with a silver tongue in her mouth. Robert Chipps And what he greatly thought, he nobly dared. WH A .-if-it CLASS PROPHECY Why, there's Gene Chieffo, famous conductor of the Boston Symphony Or- chestra. l'm glad he became such a famous person after all his hard work. Would you look at those padded chairs that fill the ballroom! We certainly were born ten years too late. Watching the rehearsal with us are Ioe Brown, famous amateur radio ace and Kalina Callow, United States representative to the Women's Olympic games being held in Germany this year. Say, isn't that Walter Campbell and Loretta Caruso standing over there? Hear tell Walter is now a hair stylist and Loretta his assistant. After a little chit-chat we move to another room, a combin- ation TV-Pool room. Imagine that! Say, there's some of our old classmates enjoying the lounge chairs. Hi. Carol, Robert, and Dick. Carol Chiody is now a stenographer for the firm of Chipps and Bundy. Niles' outstanding accountants. ls there any room for us Dick? There is, fine. Let's sit a moment and enjoy the television. Quiet everyone Catherine Casewell. who is star vocalist on the George Gobel Show, is about to sing. WAGE 21 ii ity. T, -3' is 4, 3 5 fi i is lf CLASS PROPHECY I guess we're not the only ones who have the same idea. Here comes Ioe Ciminero, now owner of Men's Exclusive in New York. Hi. Ioe! Have you any news of our old friends? Yes, I heard that Atilio Core has just completed a music course in Milan. Italy and that Ioe Coviello is touring the country giving lectures about his sports career at Ohio State. And I guess Wilma Cline is doing very well with her dress shop for girls 5'7 and over. Well shall we go to the lilth Iloor and visit some ot the classrooms. My, would you look at these rooms. There's a juke box and TV in each one. What will they think ol next? Say, isn't that Thelma Collins and Peggy Cox? How's life been treating you, Thelma? Fine, I'm now teaching baton and gymnastics at majorette school and Peg here is an elementary teacher at Youngstown school for the blind. And by the way I hear that our friends Ray Crytzer and Frank Dando are the co-pilots on the Trans-Continental Airlines with Elaine Curran as their stewardess. PAGE 22 xxm Ioseph Ciminero OI their own merits, modest men are dumb. Wilma Cline Nothing is more simple than great- ness: indeed, to be simple is to he great. Thelma Collins Golden hair and a heart to match. Atilio Core A iolly fellow with whom to chat. he dwells in a world of sharps and flats. Ioseph Coviello An athlete true was he and a friend to all he'll be. Mary Margaret Cox If smiles were gold, her fortune would be made. Raymond Crytzer His will, his way. all who see admire. Elaine Curran There's a twinkling in her eye, that speaks of mischief bye and bye. I-'rank Dando He lets his own thought lead him. H, T. ...sts we s Linda DeChristoiaro Sense and sensibility. Ralph DeMarco Though he was rough, he was kindly. Robert DeMont Here you have an athlete, one whom no one can deteat. Betty DeFabio Knowledge and truth and virtue were her theme. Bill Driscoll A youth to whom was given-so much ol earth, so much ol heaven. Ioseph Duricy My doctrine is to lay aside conten- tions and be satisfied. Leona Echnoz She is pretty to walk with and witty to talk with and pleasant to think on. Ronald Filipan His outlook is part of his virtue. Patricia Fonce A lair young maiden, small in size with lovely black hair and sparkling brown eyes. lst Nl . ..- X I 'Jkt UK 1 3' S fx '15 K 2 1 Qu-N Cv CLASS PROPHECY I read in the paper yesterday of two of our old classmates, Ralph DeMarco and Ioe Duricy. Ralph is now training track students at some school in Cleveland and Ioe is head of the art department there. Here comes Bob DeMont and Bill Driscoll, or should I say General DeMont and Geologist Driscoll. Bob received his training at East Sharp and Bill studied geology at the School of Hard Rocks. Hi fellows. What do you think of this class room? Boy, aren't these individual toun- tains filled with lemon blend just the greatest? Good ole NHS was never like this. Hey there's Betty DeFabio and Leona Echnoz, the two world speed typists, giving a demonstration to the Steno Club and isn't that Linda DeChristoiaro supervizing study hall? Holy cow, you mean they call this a study hall with snack service carts, individual desks and lamps, reclining chairs lor snoozes, and portable radios? Marge McCloskey is now window washer lor the Empire State Building and Beverly McFadden has used her height to take a job as steeplejack. I hear she de- cided upon this career after spending three months sitting on a ilag pole in her back yard. Caused quite a commotion too as all the newspapers in the country carried the story in their paper as to what she was doing. It seems to me that I read also in the Alum column of the Hi-Crier that Tony Nardo and Harold Narotsky have taken up the fiddle and guitar and are appearing on Arthur Godirey's Talent Scout program soon. You remember how great a dancer she was while a teenager. l believe she won the State-Wide contest for dancing just last year. Barbara Pete and Bob Pallante are now the co- owners of the P 6, P grocery store, which is situated on the corner of Main and State, and one of their employees is Beverly Painter who. incidentally, is head cashier. And of course you must know what happened to Bill Petty. This poor guy was dragged, and I do mean dragged, by Barbara Nass out to the baseball diamond to act as mascot for the Ferocious Nine , a girl's baseball squad, These girls have played such favorites as the Dodgers, Indians, Yankees and the Pirates. Of course they wouldn't have won so many games if it wasn't for their star pitcher Betty Pirigyi, and that great catcher Virginia Planton. Faye has become a make-up artist for the MGM company and is really noted for her work on the older set who are battling all the time to keep their real age revealed by looking young. Donna designs all the wardrobes for Marilee and I must say that she is talented. Creating wigs for bald actors is the work of our Dick and at the present time he is sporting a red one since he lost all his hair worrying about what kind of toupee he could design for Bob Hope. CLASS HISTORY OUR SOPHOMORE YEAR In the fall of 1952 pupils from McKinley and Washington Iunior High Schools combined to form the class of '55. Since these first days, our class has had a very busy time in three years here at school. The class got off to a late start in choosing a sponsor, waiting until late November, but we picked on whom we consider the best. Mr. joseph Bassett. The next order of business was the election of class officers. Dick Grainger was elected President with Bob DeMont, Vice -President: Marilyn Scarnecchia, Secretary: Pat Iurich, Treasurer, and Ron Filipan, Sergeant-at-Arms. Our officers now chosen, we selected Scarlet and White as our colors and the violet as class flower. THE FAULTS OF OUR FELLOW WE WRITE IN SAND, THEIR VIRTUES WE CARVE IN STONE, became our class motto. During our Sophomore year we raised money by selling programs at basketball games and holding post game dances. Our team's winning the Steel Valley Conference Crown helped the receipts of each. As spring rolled around our thoughts moved to dreams of our Sophomore party. Our class tried a new idea and as well as having danc- ing we played various games, which resulted in a party that was enjoyed by all. This brought our Sophomore year to an end and we looked forward with great anticipation to our Iunior year and PROM. OUR IUNIOR YEAR We really felt important when we took over the position of Iuniors at McKinley High School. After cheering our football team to the Steel Valley Conference Crown the class got to work. This was our year to sponsor Prom. The class officers chosen were: Dick Grain- ger, President: Carol Keeney, Vice President: Pat Leo, Secretary: Paul Mandras, Treasurer. and lack Williams, Sergeant-at-Arms. Our Pigskin Prom was quite a celebration as we honored our S.V.C. champs of the grid- iron. During the year we built up the class treasury with several bake sales and the sale of Christ- mas cards. All members of the class pitched in to make our projects profitable and the Prom outlook was hopeful. Again we took time out to honor our athletes. Our Dragon cagers went undefeated and rated in the Big Three in the state Basketball Poll. The Little Dog Laughed was our first class play. The comedy was a success and played to full house audiences. Our Iunior-Senior Party was another stand out. Gals in cottons and fellas in blue jeans danced in the gym which featured dec- orations to the theme April Shower . The big night of our school year, Iunior- Senior Prom, arrived: and what an affair it was! The memorial was packed with gaily colored formals and white dinner jackets. Amid the floral decorations of a Formal Garden Queen Barbara Marinelli and her 12 attendants reigned over the evening's activities. Our Prom will always stand out in our minds as one of the best socials during our school years. As we watched the class of '54 leave us, the realization strikes us: we're now Seniors . SENIORS Seniors, that word finally applies to us! It's a great feeling to reach the top in your school and deserve to be called Senior , but it made us in a way, feel sad as we knew our high school days were almost at an end. Again our class held elections with the fol- lowing results: Phil Giuliano, President: Dick Grainger, Vice President: Carol Keeney, Sec- retary: Ann Louise Brooks, Treasurer: and Dick Lewis, Sergeant-at-Arms. Mr. Robert Clark took over our Annual Pro- duction Staff and Mr. Donald Pallante was again in charge of the Yearbook Financial Staff. Then members of these staffs started the tremendous task of producing the book you are now reading. The fall season was spent cheering our great football squad to the school's first undefeated and untied season. Orchids to Mr. Bassett, his staff and the boys. We seniors again sponsored the Pigskin Prom to honor our heroes and had a big affair, queen and all. Our Iunior-Senior Party was another wonder- ful affair at which the Seniors enjoyed their last class party. Mr. Clark was chosen a second time to pro- duce our play. The play, like all other class doings, went over with a bang. May rolled around and brought with it Prom. The Iuniors worked very hard and gave the Seniors a prom to remember. The underclassmen sat wide-eyed as the Seniors marched into the auditorium in their caps and gowns for Recognition Day. This was one day during which we really felt great. Iune first-Graduation-Diplomas-. After a short ceremony we found ourselves alumni and facing the world alone. Regardless of what field we may pursue-the service, college, or business, one thing is sure-we'll always have a spot in our heart for dear old McKinley. EE U 2.04143 ,I. II I II, QI., - - wr :-' , ,. PAGE 73 ACTIVITIES, 1954-55 During this year the various extra-curricular activities at McKinley High School have proven that there can be fun and achievement in other fields than the academic field. The chorus sang selections on the football field for the Girard game, presented a Christmas concert at Open House and the Spring concert on May l, 2. McKinley not only has a chorus but also five ensembles including the Senior-itas, Vertichords, Singing Beaux, Accidentals, and Singing Belles. These groups have sung for various clubs and organizations during the year and were featured in the first part of the Spring Choral Concert. Also appearing in the field of music at NHS was the McKinley March- ing Band. At every football game the members of this group put on shows and during basketball season a German band played during halftime. They also played for the Veteran Day Ceremonies, turnpike dedication, post game dances, the junior play, Pigskin Prom, Open House, and the chorus dance. Bringing speech honors to NHS was the National Forensic League. This group participated in the local Prince of Peace Contest, Youngstown Rotary Debate Tourney, and won speech contests at Boardman and Cuyahoga Falls. This activity raises funds by conducting a sales tax drive. The Radio Club worked on the Civil Defense Communications Tractor Trailer for the Ohio Civil Defense Corps. These boys mounted radio gear, wired in antenna and mounted an aircraft transmitter and receiving antenna on the truck. They also participated in a general field exercises of the 31st Mobile Support Group, air attack and the unannounced national air raid alert. Selling refreshments at the football games was the chief duty of the Banquet Committee. The money received was used to sponsor the Athletic Banquet. Members of the GAA completed a year of volleyball, basketball, table tennis and badminton. This group of girls decorated the school's Christmas tree, ushered the visitors at Open House, sold mums at football games and sponsored the GAA dance. The Art Club decorated the school for Christmas, the stage for all activities and plays, labeled the rows of seats in the auditorium and sold pep shakers at the football games, while the library assistants aided the school librarian during their study halls by checking books in and out, classifying books and doing various other tasks. Showing education films and film strips and operating the tape re- corder were the boys of the projection crew under the direction of Mr. Prosser. The Student Council produced Stunt Night, decorated the goal posts at the games, chose the Citizen-of-the-Week, sponsored a junior high dance, pro- moted the March of Dimes drive and sold pennants for sport's frays. The Hi-Crier put out a daily high school paper, which is printed in the Niles Times. This group received a first class honor rating in the National Scholastic Press Association, attended Tri-County meets, Editor's Conference and Press Meet at Kent State University, and co-sponsored two post-game dances. Nlles 38. Farrell 13 On a warm twenty-fourth of September, the sup- posedly young and inexperienced Dragons traveled to Farrell. Pennsylvania and opened their 1954 schedule with an explosion heard all over the district as they swamped the Farrell High Steelers by a 38 to 13 count. Coach Ioseph Bassett's eleven displayed speed. power, depth. great passing. and even better running as they scored in every period of play. Four Dragons shared scoring honors. Halfback Vince Holmes and fullback Bob DeMont gamered two TD's each. Halfback loe Ziegler and Holmes tallied Niles' two extra points on passes. Niles 24. South 14 On Friday evening, September 24, the high spirited McKinley eleven made their home debut of the season and dumped the Youngstown South Warriors to the tune of 24 to 14 at Riverside Stadium. This marked the first time since 1949 that a Niles team downed South on the gridiron. The Bassettrnen employed the Share the Wealth plan as four players broke into paydirt. Ioe Ziegler, Bob DeMont. Paul Mandras, and Vince Holmes each chalked up one touchdown. Niles 28. Boardman 7 The mighty Dragons kept right on rolling and whip- ped the Boardman Spartans 26 to 7 at Riverside Stadium for their third consecutive win and their first in Steel Valley Conference play. ln the scoring column it was Vince Holmes with two tallies. loe Ziegler, and Al Penksa one apiece. Re- serve halfback Lenny Tassone snared a pass for the only P.A.'l'. Nlles 32, Memorial 7 The largest crowd of the young season, approxi- mately 5.000 spectators, watched the McKinley eleven roll over what was considered its biggest hurdle to the 1954 SVC loop title, as they crushed the Campbell Me- morial Red Devils 32 to 7 at Memorial Stadium in Campbell. lt marked the fourth win in a row for the fire breathing Dragons, and they seemed to be on their way to a great season. The Niles scoring consisted of three TD's by De- Mont, one each by Ioe Ziegler and Holmes. The extra points were scored by Tassone and Holmes on passes. Niles 28. Fitch 6 After having the scheduled game with Austintown Fitch on October 15, rained out or better yet flooded out, the Niles football machine moved into high gear on the following Monday evening and defeated both the mud and Fitch by a 26 to 6 margin to gain their fifth consecutive win of the campaign and control of the Steel Valley Conference title race. Crossing the goal line for the winners were Ioe Ziegler, Tom Williams, Vince Holmes and Bob DeMont, each with a single T.D. Ioe Coviello and Holmes chalk- ed up the P.A.T's on pass plays. Niles 25. Struthers 0 Niles McKinley's gridiron juggernaut smashed its way to a 25 to 0 win over Struthers on October 22 at Riverside Stadium and gained undisputed lead in the Steel Valley Conference as Bob DeMont reeled off three touchdown runs to set the torrid pace. Vince Holmes raced for the other Dragon tally and Bob Ziegler grab- bed off a pass for the only extra point. Niles 12. Ellet 7 Playing before a large Homecoming crowd, the Niles Dragons fought hard for a 12 to 7 win over a stubborn Akron Ellet eleven on October 28 at Riverside Stadium. The defensive unit was at its best as the locals weathered a fourth period rally and turned back the Akron Orangemen deep in Dragon territory. Bob Ziegler scampered to paydirt for Niles in the first and third quarters. Niles 40. Hubbard U Cutting loose with the full force of their offensive fury. the Niles McKinley Red Dragons crushed the Hub- bard Eagles, 40 to 0, at Hubbard on November 5. Bob DeMont racked up three T.D.'s. Vince Holmes two, and Ioe Ziegler one. as the high-riding Dragon regulars were kept under wraps most of the evening with substitutes playing the major portion of the game. This victory over the Eagles upped the Niles record to eight straight wins without tarnish to the school colors and set the stage for the annual arch-rival battle with McKinley's down-river foe the Girard Indians on No- vember 12. Niles 34, Girard 0 The mighty Niles McKinley Red Dragons soared to the pinnacle of gridiron success by outclassing Girard's previously unbeaten Indians, 34 to 0. before the sea- son's largest crowd of 6,000 partial fans. The Dragons did nearly everything in displaying what they could do when the chips were down and wrapped up their second straight Steel Valley Confer- ence crown and finished the first undefeated football season in the history of Niles High School. Fifteen McKinley senior gridders wrote the final lines to a glowing chapter in the school's football his- tory by displaying skill and determination in the lop- sided victory over their oldest rivals. Those NHS seniors who made their last gridiron ap- pearance against the lndians included Paul Mandras. Dick Williams, Bob Bauman, Dick Grainger, Dick Lewis, Tony Nardo, Jim Law, Ward Kaye. Hugh Blakley, Andy Trotogot, Ioe Coviello, Vince Holmes, Bob DeMont. Bob Ziegler. and Lenny Tassone. Niles became the first school to capture the Steel Valley Conference grid title two years in succession. A capable group of assistant coaches, Don Pallante. Lou Toth. Tom Andres, and Dom Match aided head mentor loseph Bassett in guiding the Dragons to the best record in the history of McKinley High. NANCY MALONE EDITOR IN CHIEF The high prize of life, the crowning fortune of a man, is to be born with a bias to some pursuit which finds him in employment and happiness. -Emerson Nancy was truly bias to the pursuit of preparing the Dragon for pub- lication. Long hours of tedious work failed to dent her determination to get the job done. We will always appreciate your accomplishment. The Class of 1955 PAGE IDB VIRGINIA BLEAKLEY ASSISTANT EDITOR IN CHIEF A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. -Lincoln Ginger strove to keep the chain of accomplishment strong. Being an assistant was no easy job, but you did your best and made it an endeavor worthy of great praise. Your reliability on the Dragon staff was most noble. The Class of 1955 D4 MARILYN WOOD ASSISTANT EDITOR IN CHIEF The sum of wisdom is, that the time is never lost that is denoted to work. -Emerson IVIari1yn's granting of time and effort to the creation of this edition is worthy of greater comment than noted here.
