With the departure of Mr. Schou, NHS welcomed Mr. John McGoni- gle OS our new leader. The Class of ' 88 took over as seniors, and new fresh- men quietly made a spot for themselves at our school. The 1987- ' 88 school year also marked the seventy-fifth birthday of the NHS yearbook, the TATTLER. This yearbook doesn ' t just celebrate success- es and victories, but the little things that make NHS so special, like the people, af- ter school events, helpful staff members, and most of all, the friendships made dur- ing the year. The 1987- ' 88 TATTLER staff invites one and all to participate in this celebration through Celebrate ' 88. HALL MONITORS 24 HOMECOMING: A near perfect celebration Homecoming ' 87, held the week of Oct. 12-16, was a great and spirited time for all the students and staff at NHS. To show their spirit, many students dressed for Farmer ' s Day, Fifties Day, Crazy Day, Uniform Day, and Blue and Gold Day. Wednesday night the annual Powder- puff Game was held, with the Senior Freshman team defeating the Junior Sophomore team. Following the game, students attended the first NHS Bonfire. Finally Friday came and everyone looked forward to the sixth hour pep rally. The entire student body cheered loudly during the class cheers, toilet pa- per contest and cheerleoding dances. Coach Magrane and Smith said, This was one of the best pep rallies in the years we ' ve been here. Friday night arrived and the question on everyone ' s mind was, Who won King and Queen? During the half-time fes- tivities Missy Flick and Scott Crocker re- ceived the honors. Being crowned queen was the happiest and most ex- citing times in my life. It is one high school memory I ' ll always cherish, said Queen Missy Flick. Even though the Vikes lost to Loy Norrix 19-6, Homecoming Week was definitely a near perfect celebration! Brad Harbaugh, co-chairman of Intramural Volleyball, stated, I think Intramural gives people a chance to get involved athletical- ly and also to meet new friends to compete against. The lack of participation was a problem this year. By the end of the season we only had few teams left; I wish more teams would have actually played. In the second half, the VIkes pulled through a close game and completed a perfect week with a win of 71-66. I had a great experience during Basketball Homecoming. The Co-op programs aid students in making the transition from school to work; that is, the program lead to the development of more positive self- concepts, better attitudes toward school and employment, and im proved interpersonal skills. Over 100 seniors at NHS are participating in the activity under the supervision of Barbara Cook, Leon Heimberger, and myself. Thousands of students have completed the program which began in 1947. Cooperative education is a capstone expe- rience for high school seniors preparing for a career, said Mr. Robert Bryant. Finally, after one last look, the judges crowned the New Miss Niles, Shelly Flick, and her court, Lori Bailey, first runner- up, and Julie Magrane, second runner-up. Winning Miss Niles seemed too good to be true! I ' ve never par- ticipated in a beauty pageant before so to win this was a great honor. A special thanks goes out to Kristi Malooley and Jenny Vales for their endless efforts to- ward making the 1988 Prom such a success. The Century Center was really pretty; it was really a nice night, said junior Tori Leonard. I ' ve never danced so much in my life. I think I lost 5 pounds. The night went really fast, said senior Dolly Raster. Principal John McGonigle said, It went very smooth- ly. The atmosphere was very condu- cive for student enjoyment. Graduation was held outdoors, much to the delight of the seniors, and the excitement of all helped to warm the slightly cool tem- peratures. This years ' graduation fea- tured student speakers Stephanie Francis, David Mattiford, and Mike Bess. Their speeches brought back many memories, and also predicted the future for some NHS grads. Steph- anie Francis recalled all the friends she had made in her educational career, while Dave Mattiford remembered back to junior high and kindergarten. Mike Bess got the audience laughing with his predictions for some Class of ' 88 grads: Todd Cashbaugh as a mail- man? Danny Brawley as a professor of mathematics? P.J. Mead and Mr. McGonigle as owners of a driving school? Only the future will tell . . . Also during the ceremony, Scott Zeiter, Beth Hipshier, Julie Magrane, and Jen- ny Patterson song a lovely song they had written especially for the Class of ' 88. All in all, graduation was a cele- bration to be remembered for a long time to come. Counterclockwise Page 42: — The Class of ' 88 — The line up for Baccalaureate — Julie Magrane. Beth Hipshier. Lesser teams would have given up after the fourth or fifth game, but this team worked as hard as any team in the 19 years I ' ve coached at Niles, said Coach Dave Davisson. ' Tm as proud of this team as I am of the 1979 undefeated team. They played the gome for what it was intended to be for — for the enjoyment of it. The one thing that can be said for them — ' THEY NEVER QUIT ' . They may have not won a game this season but they certainly were winners in their coaches ' eyes. x. The 1987 J.V. football season was an exciting and successful experi- ence for this years participants. From the opening come-from-be- hind victory against Holland, to the stalwart goal line stand with 18 sec- onds remaining to defeat Dowa- giac, we kept the fans in the stands ' until the end of the con- tests, commented a satisfied Coach Richard Ham. We learned much from the season and having ten returning Juniors back for the next year gathered much need- ed game experience. The girls played very good, consistent basketball all season long. We lost a fev close ones that I thought v e should hove won but we won a few games we probably should have lost so it all evens out. Overall I was proud of the girls and pleased with their progress and improve- ments this season. They worked extremely hard all year and that hard work has paid off. The ' Lady Vikes ' finished with a respectable 16-6 record and tied for second place in the Big Eight Conference. Jill Greene and Jennifer Klose earned All-Conference awards and our only senior, Julie Magrane was Honorable Mention, said Coach Jim Arnold Page 50 Clockwise — Senior Julie Magrane sings the National Anttiem before the last home game. — Jill Greene warms up before tip-off. The team wound up with a record of 1 7 wins and 3 losses. The Junior Varsity was second in the Big Eight Conference. The co-cap- tains of the team were Jennifer Mor- ris and Ann Clancy. The biggest victory of the year came against Benton Harbor, who lost only twice this year. Some other big wins came against St. Joe twice, Battle Creek, Portage Northern, and Brandywine. These games were all close and could have been any- ones gome, but the girls played hard and they proved that they were the team to deserve it. The team won all eleven games played on their home court. They also won their last eight games of the season. The team consisted of eleven play- ers, eight of them were sophomores and three were freshmen, said Coach Jim Jeschke. Freshmen Girls post undefeated season The Niles Girls Freshmen Basket- ball Team had a very successful season In 1987 as they finished the year with a perfect record of 13-0. Big wins over Kalamazoo Central and Benton Harbor got the girls off to an excellent start and the team continued to Im- prove as the season progressed. The girls were lead by Magda Or- tiz, Jessica Duminle and Quentelia Murphy. However, winning was always a team effort with every- one contributing because for most of the season the squad only had 8 players healthy. This is a very talented group of young ladies who. If they continue to work hard, will really help the girls program in the next couple years. I am very pleased with the opportunity I had to work with these girls. Cross-country: best in the long run This year ' s varsity cross country teams enjoyed one of the best seasons ever. The boys finished second in the county, with a 13-3 overall record. Senior Michelle Johnson said, 1 v ould like to thank Mr. Leweke for encouraging me throughout my three years of running cross country. My senior year w as, by far, the best because we were able to work together as a team and have a very successful season. Coach Greg Leweke commented on the nice job both teams did this year. Dave Couch was outstanding all year. He was an All- county, All-conference, and All-regional performer. He qualified for the state meet for the second year in a row. The Vikes were led by co-captains Grant Stevenson and Chris Rogiers. Co-captain Grant Ste- venson said, Niles soccer did a little better in 1987 than in 1986, but still has a long way to go before competing for the Big 8 title. The high point of the season was the shut- out win over rival Kalamazoo Central (2-0) in which goalie Edmund Urban did an out- standing job. For the first time we had as many as three players make all confer- ence teams. Chris Rogiers was named sec- ond team halfback. Grant Stevenson was named honorable mention forward, and Tyler Havens was named honorable men- tion fullback. Many injuries prevented us from having as good a season as we would have liked, but we hope to improve and do better next year. Junior Mike Wiest said, The 1987 season proved to be a learning experience. Coach Luke takes over young netters The 1987 tennis season underwent many changes this year as they lost eight starters trom last year and acquired a new coach. Coach Chuck Luke said, The highlight of the season was surprising all the teams in the conference as they thought we would be pushovers with the graduation of eight starters. Number one singles player Kathy Crawford said, I was very optimistic on the first day of tryouts because Heather Luke and I were the only returning lettermen. But, as the season progressed everyone showed a lot of potential and I had a lot of fun. If it weren ' t for managers, the teams could not function. Manager duties vary from sport to sport. For example, basketball managers have to keep scorebooks and stats, keep water bottles full, keep track of warm-ups and be ready to help out whenever need- ed. Other sports that require a lot of work by managers are wrestling, volleyball, track, baseball, softball, football, soccer and tennis. Being a manager also requires putting in a lot of after school time, being at practice everyday and attending games or meets. Senior wrestling manag- er, Lisa See said, It was really interesting working with all the managers. ■■B mM ' H H m jM Hf i H r V niR page 60 — Mark Young: Varsity basketball manager — Sarah Gibson and Becky Rosenthal: Varsity baseball manag- ers. — Cindy Mather: Varsity Softball manager. — Brian Malooley: Camera man for varsity girl ' s basketball. — Carlo DeCraene and Angle Whittaker: Varsity Softball man- agers. — Lisa See: Wrestling manager page 61 — Nicole Bierwagon: Junior varsity girls basketball manager. — Wrestling managers: Becky Kirsch, Jill McCreedy, Jenny Lil- lieand, Lisa See. — Sylvia Baker and Cindy Hawke: Varsity volleyball managers. — Tom Reed: Varsity boy ' s basketball manager — Shelly Conner: Varsity girl ' s basketball manager — Sylvia Baker in action. 61 Pep, spirit, and support are what the Viking Cheerleaders give to Niles High School. Their cheers provide the team and fans with enthusiasnn, no matter what the score. Even though what they do looks easy, it takes a lot of practice, hard work, and dedication. Cheerleading season started in August with the girls attending camp at Michigan State University. They attended this camp for four days of intense training and strenuous workouts. After camp the cheerleaders had practice at least twice a week which included aerobics, practicing cheers, and practicing their difficult gymnastics. Cheerleading takes a lot of hard work but they are true athletes so they are willing to do what it takes to have a successful cheerleading program. It isn ' t all fun and games. A lot of hard work is needed and in order to get something out of it, you must put something into it, said Jean Morgan. Dedication is the final ingredient it takes to be a Niles Cheerleader. A lot of girls may want to become cheerleaders just to get popular, but after awhile they find out that it ' s not what expected. Cheerleading is a sport and if the dedication isn ' t there you ' re not going to be a good cheerleader. It ' s obvious however, that this years cheerleaders had the dedication. If anyone is interested in being a cheerleader, do it because you want to and you enjoy cheer- leading. Things will work out a lot better, said Jean Morgan. The team started fresh with the only returning lettermen being Scott Crocker; who was last year ' s sixth man off the bench, Jeff Freeze, Chris Clancy, Darwin Hunt and Steve Francis. Scott Crocker and Jeff Freeze were consistant starters for Niles this year. Steve Francis and Darwin Hunt were rotat- ing starters, while Chris Clancy pro- vided stability from the bench. Rounding out the starting rotation for this year were Todd Ham, Rod Wright and John Taylor. Rod Dellin- ger, Mike Parks and John Hunt came up from the junior varsity for a strong bench for Niles. Niles started out with a big win in a close game against cross town rival Brandywine which was one of the team ' s goals this year. Another was winning Homecoming against Ben- ton Harbor. Some think the win was because of Scott Crocker ' s lucky shoes, but actually was the result of determination and teamwork, Clockwise — Steve Francis brings tlie ball up the court. — The team huddles up during a time-out. — Coaches Magrane and Arnold sit back to enjoy the J. Coacl Becker said, We had a good season, much improved over last year. We only lost three seniors but we could have been better with a little better attitude and desire, we could have been district champs. This year ' s team had three people qualify for state. Stu- dents are selected by a board of quali- fied teachers based on the students grade point average, ability to hold lead- ership positions and teacher recommen- dations. The NHS chapter contains fifty members, not including the Spring induc- tions. Sandy Stone said, As President of the National Honor Society, I had a diffi- cult time at the beginning of the year due to a switch in sponsors. The Executive Council really buckled down and worked hard to get the Society back on its time schedule! Throughout the year we have had numerous fundraisers which include house number painting on the curb, can- dy cane sales, and candy kisses sales. Hipshier and Wardlaw lead in The King and I On February 27 and 28, the Niles High School auditorium came alive with song and dance as the musical department presented The King and I . Over 50 cast members, many of them elementary students, entertained a packed auditorium with such songs as Getting to Know You , Hello Young Lovers , and many more. Seniors Joy Wardlaw and Beth Hipshier enhanced the presentation with their leading roles. With very few rehearsals, the cast had to be dedicated and work to- gether. Opening night brought ner- vousness, which was replaced with relief after the curtain coll. The en- tire experience was well worth the hard work, said dancer Kelly Don- leve. But because of hard work and dedication by a truly wonderful yearbook staff, I ' ve never been more proud of a group of students. The pride of these stu- dents is evident in the 1988 TATTLER, said Miss Hold- ship, advisor. Miss Holdship and I, not only knowing noth- ing about yearbooks but not knowing anything about road mops, found our- selves traveling to Oakland University for a crash yearbook workshop. Of course, we took a few wrong turns but eventually arrived at our home for four days. We had classes in the nnorning, afternoon, and evening, which gave me a taste of college cramming. We came out of the workshop knowing a lot more about yearbooks, and for my- self, well, I knew a lot more about the flu. The school year began and so did our ad campaign We knew that money was the most important thing In pro- ducing a goo:: yearbook, as in any other project, v.- soon found getting ads wasn ' t as ec as it seemed. We were used, abuse and refused. Our ad campaign lasterJ until January and we were able to ro ' ce enough money to meet our goals. The next step was dividing up sections and beginning to draw Uf_ layouts. We : 3eded to design a therne for our work and we decided that no matter if we failed or succeeded we would celebrate our book after the final deadline was met. We made a few changes in the 1988 book; only with the idea of improving. This year there were 220 pages rather than 232 yet we exceeded our goal, which was to fill those pages with as many pictures as a book with 232 pages. We had more candid layouts, 26 due to smaller underclassmen, 54 mugs, new graphic techniques, 83 new sports layouts to make room for more action shots of sports, more copy for more accurately recording the year, and more up close looks at indi- viduals, and many other positive changes. The year was not without problems: checking pages, redoing pages, get- ting pictures, losing pictures, having the right names, misspellings, bod typewriters, not enough yearbook soles, and of course, many complaints. But we were all able to keep a smile on our face and we never lost sight of our goals. The yearbook staff would like to thank Mr. McGonigle for his cooperation when ever we asked, and the faculty at NHS for patience and understand- ing during our many interuptions. We ' d also like to thank Mr. Mike Rowe, our Josten ' s advisor, for not being nervous, McDonald ' s Studio for their countless hours of picture taking. For myself, I would like to thank the yearbook staff for their patience with the layouts, pic- tures, and my complaining. They worked hard and were always willing to make changes when asked. I would especially like to thank Miss Holdship for being an ambitious advisor. If it wasn ' t for her sharing her ambition with myself and the staff, this book wouldn ' t have been a success. Miss Holdship worked hard in producing a Class A year- book at Niles High School. I hope you enjoy this book as much as we enjoyed presenting it to you. We ' re proud of our book and we hope you are tool J J05TEN5 V
