THE CHANGING SCENE ALICE SCHMUHL When Mrs. Alice Schmuhl, .the former school nurse, died last September. there was dismay in every heart. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and of the nation-wide Nightingale Club. Long and faithfully she had served here in our high school. When we moved from the old high school to the new, she was with us. When we needed help, we could count on her. Not only did she provide medical care for us. but she also had the responsibility of caring for Junior High. Her presence will be greatly missed. 'xl MR. WESTERHOF LEAVES At the end of the first semester. Mr. Westerhof left Niles to take up his new job as Field Representative for the South-Western Publishing Company. In this position he deals with schools throughout Michigan as a public relations contact. Mr. Westerhof liked his classes to be run in a demo- cratic fashion whenever possible. and often let his students decide on their homework or class procedure. During his six years at Niles he taught several courses including typ- ing. bookkeeping, salesmanship, and Gregg shorthand. His is a face which has been seen at every game, for he was a loyal fan of the team. He sponsored our school paper for many years also. We miss Mr. Westerhof both in the class room and at the various school activities. but we wish him luck in his future work. MRS. GOSS. OUR SCHOOL NURSE Mrs. Goss. our new school nurse, is well equipped for her job. She is a graduate of the South Bend Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She took extension work at Indiana University. For seven years she worked in the Public Health Department, and obtained her experience with children when she worked as an office nurse for a pediatrician. Here in Niles. she worked in the Exceptional Child- ren's School for three years before taking up her post at Niles High School. One of her first contributions to the high school was to start a Future Nurses Club. We of the TATTLER staff believe she will prove to be a fine addition to Niles High School.
