Keeping this basic idea in mind we are going to use various combinations of the number llzrvv throughout our annual. One way of representing the number three is by means of a triangle. Thus when you see this shape you will know it is just the spirit of three being revealed again. THE CHANGING SCENE ALICE SCHMUHL When Mrs. Alice Schmuhl, .the former school nurse, died last September. there was dismay in every heart. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and of the nation-wide Nightingale Club. Long and faithfully she had served here in our high school. When we moved from the old high school to the new, she was with us. When we needed help, we could count on her. Not only did she provide medical care for us. but she also had the responsibility of caring for Junior High. Her presence will be greatly missed. 'xl MR. WESTERHOF LEAVES At the end of the first semester. Mr. Westerhof left Niles to take up his new job as Field Representative for the South-Western Publishing Company. In this position he deals with schools throughout Michigan as a public relations contact. Mr. Westerhof liked his classes to be run in a demo- cratic fashion whenever possible. and often let his students decide on their homework or class procedure. During his six years at Niles he taught several courses including typ- ing. bookkeeping, salesmanship, and Gregg shorthand. His is a face which has been seen at every game, for he was a loyal fan of the team. He sponsored our school paper for many years also. We miss Mr. Westerhof both in the class room and at the various school activities. but we wish him luck in his future work. MRS. GOSS. OUR SCHOOL NURSE Mrs. Goss. our new school nurse, is well equipped for her job. She is a graduate of the South Bend Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She took extension work at Indiana University. For seven years she worked in the Public Health Department, and obtained her experience with children when she worked as an office nurse for a pediatrician. Here in Niles. she worked in the Exceptional Child- ren's School for three years before taking up her post at Niles High School. One of her first contributions to the high school was to start a Future Nurses Club. We of the TATTLER staff believe she will prove to be a fine addition to Niles High School. ,,.. ,.,-4.-.1- ,,,,..5...- '-2:. -'If- ',., 3. -1- '- .1 '-if- ' .. SAFETY COMMITTEE Working on some of their plans are: Reg Wzlgle, Rich Ferguson, Ted Mullett, und Ed Duffield members of the Safety Committee. F S .gf 77 'T'-ok KISNT IIUNZIKFR STUDENT COURT The idea of a Student Court was first presented as a possible Student Council project at a Council meeting last October. Kent Hunziker presented the proposal and was given the chairmanship of a special Council committee to consider the measure, and he was told to pick a sizable committee. Along with the Court itself. the committee felt that a basis for rulings was needed: so a Code of Ethics was set up, containing the aspects of general good behavior desirable in all students. Ultimately it was decided that the Court would have five judges, two each from the senior and junior classes and one sophomore judge. These judges would appoint the remaining Court oliicers: baliff, recorder. prosecuting and defense attorneys, and-to deliver summonses and make arrests-fifteen marshals from each class. To present the proposal to the students, the committee organized an assembly at which the background was brought out. the Code was explained, a general description of the Court was presented. and information concerning the method for establishing the system was given. A mock Court session was shown, giving all the steps to be followed in the real cases. from arrest to trial. From then until the first weeks of January the committee traveled to all the advisories answering questions, and the Court's relationship to the faculty was outlined at a faculty session. A two-thirds majority was needed for passage, and the Court was to be put in only if the Code, or at least five articles thereof, was accepted. When the vote was taken in January, the Code passed as a whole, with a three to one vote. The Court was accepted by the needed two-thirds of the students. ,I Looking at the new Code of Ethics set up by their committee are left to right: Kent Hunziker, Sharon Mitchell, Tom Verner, and Mary Marshall. JUNIOR PLAY This year the Junior Class presented a dramatic play, Dr. Hudson's Secret Journal, under the direction of Mr. William Potts. The play portrays the story of a doctor so dedicated to his profession that he neglected his daughter. To add to his worries, a hard-headed businessman refused to sell land for the much needed new hospital and his sophisticated daughter created an uproar by becoming a nurse's aide. The kindly doctor took under his wing a young hoodlum who reciprocated by stealing the doctor's car. The climax was reached when the doctor was called upon to perform an operation upon his own daughter to save her life. The play combined romance and excitement with real life sentiment to make it a memorable experience for all those who saw it. One of the first duties of the staff was to select a theme for our annual. Many ideas were presented, and at last we settled on using the number THREE around which to build our theme. Jan Smith reminded us that this year's class was the first one to go completely through the three years at the new Niles Senior High School together. Because this staff was inexperienced. we decided that we must work especially hard to meet our deadlines. We were successful in a large part in this venture. Another problem that had to be discussed was what kind of cover we should have on our annual. We decided on the design which you sec on the front as it is attractive and repeats our theme. The stall' has worked long and hard to present this issue. We hope you will enjoy reading it as much as we have enjoyed making it. The layout men were Rodney Beckwith and Mairk Vernau. Then the boys in the helmets and shoulder pads stole the spot light, humbling all our conference scores. Coach Terry Carey recruited several sophomores from the junior-varsity ranks to fortify the team which was weak at that time. During the course of that year and the year following, the team possessed just a mediocre record. The gamble that Mr. Carey took eventually paid off as the Vikes of this year rolled to a mark of eight victories and one set back, while capturing the Big Five Conference crown. The team had very good balance: good running and blocking, considerable depth, and experienced personnel. Our Vikes were pitted against some formidable foes, only to emerge each time the victor. Their one setback came at the hands of Grand Haven's Buccaneers. The team was not only very good this year, but it promises to be the same next year with several lettermen returning to the lineup. There were several outstanding boys on this year's team. Halfback Terry Linville was on the all-conference and second string all-state elevensg while tackle Bob Pierce, guard Jim Young, halfback Paul Bennett, and end Jerry Wingeart were on the all-conference team and various all-state honorable-mention teams. an B' 1 Niles 25 I4 39 39 46 Z! 0 I8 22 Opp. Kalamazoo Central 0 Goshen 0 Washington-Clay 7 Buchanan 0 St. Joseph I3 Benton Harbor 0 Grand Haven I4 Dowagiac 6 Holland 7 -K '- rf ' cs . The Junior Varsity Football Team lead by two top-notch coaches, Mr. Welborn, the line coach, and Mr. Basker, the backfield coach. The team enjoyed having them for coaches. The team won every game until we played St. Joe, they were rough and tough. We worked especially hard. With George Brawley at quarterback, Tom Miller at full- back, Danny Abair at right halfback and Arton Briggs at left halfback, we had a very fast backfield. A powerful line of left end Dave Click, left tackle Bob Osborn, left guard Ron Yonkers, center Terry Crouch. right guard Tom South, right tackle Roger Stone, right end Alan Snyder. In the St. Joe game our right halfback Steve Machalleck broke his wrist and was sidelined for the rest of the season. Arton Briggs replaced Steve and had a com- mendable record. Front row: Ken Kelly, Mike Freshley, Tom Smith, Larry Linville, Jerry Wingeart, Chuck Morton. This year's Hrejuvenated Vikes, coached by Don Bender, brought Niles out of its basketball dilemma by winning eight games while losing only seven. The Vikings were two-time winners over Benton Harbor, Buchanan, and Dowagiac, in addition to subduing both Portage and Muskegon once. The Bendermen fell to the powerful Bears of St. Joseph twice, and St. Joseph Catholic of South Bend, Portage, Grand Haven, South Bend Washington, and Muskegon Heights once each. The hustle of the individual ball players as well as the good teamwork captured the fancy of the ever-increasing fandom at the outset of the season. A great incentive was also given the team by the loyal support of the student body at N.H.S. this year. At the district tournament, the law of averages caught up with the Vikes as they fell in the final round to Benton Harbor, whom they had beaten twice in regular season play. We hope that next year, as the team's season mark continues to improve, so will its tournament record. Our Senior lettermen this year were Jerry Wingeart, Chuck Morton, Tom Smith, Ocie Mitchell, and Terry Linville, the latter making second team on this year's all-conference team. Dick Adler was the very capable senior manager. Juniors Roger Hargreaves, all-conference Mike Freshley, Vern Quick, Larry Linville, Don Albert, and Ken Kelly, along with the up-and-coming sophomores, have the basketball future of N.H.S. at stake. The 1958-59 Junior Varsity posted an enviable record this season, with twelve wins and three losses. They scored 890 points for an average of 60 points per game. while their opponents scored 703 points for an average of 46 points per game. They scored in the seventies four times this season, which is an unheralded event for a Jayvee team. Their total point out-put makes them the highest scoring Jayvee team in recent years, if not ever. This team served warning to future varsity opponents to beware, as they were unbeaten by any team in- the conference. They possessed the three essentials which a sound team needs, mainly speed, height, and desire. The rebounding was handled very capably by Bob Billings, Denny Clymer, Dave Click, Allen Snyder, Jim Mc- Kamey, and Eugene Hubert. The ball handling and speed were furnished by Tom Miller, Steve Machalleck, Tom Schick, George Brawley, Dan Abair, and Denny Ellis. Steve Machalleck led the scoring with 141 points, followed by Tom Miller with 136, Bob Billings with 118, Denny Clymer with 115. Allen Snyder with 106 Dave Click with 96, and Tom Schick with 87.
