9 t(letfoeme it BILL MATHEWS William E. Mathews, Bill to his many friends, has been a favorite teacher of hundreds of Niles students since he first came in 1922. A band master extraordinary Bill founded the Dowa- giac band in 1916 and then originated the Niles band in 1922. He continued as band director until 1936. Since then, over the years he has taught, besides government and commercial law, the importance of a sense of humor and a need for a mature philosophy. Students will always remember Bill for his sincere friendliness, his bizarre calendars, his un- limited stories, his expert advice on such matters as business, law, politics, and his practical jokes. Besides receiving his A.B. degree at the Uni- versity of Michigan, Bill Mathews has done graduate work at Northwestern University. Much of his time, particularly the summer is spent at his farm in Indiana. His habits consist of hard work and little sleep. Bill Mathews spends much free time on the farm. One of Bill ' s earlier bands poses for a photo. Niles High School will miss this man who fights the Battle of the Bulge by eating more salad dressing and ice cream, who retains the running friendly feud with Mr. Walker as to who is the oldest, who rides to and from school in obliging taxis while his new Roadmaster stays in the garage, and who above all considers all boys and girls to be friends as well as students. In a typical hall scene Bill fixes Mr. Smith while Mr. Nieboer awaits the reaction.

Ok Me H Ua n Carl Hallenius applies the fin- ishing touches to the make-up of a cast member. CARL HALLENIUS The following students tribute in memorium appeared in the NEW MOON: Carl J. Hallenius was a man who taught English, a man who devoted his whole life to teaching. He never married; he lived alone in his apartment on Cedar Street. Here was a quiet man who won a bronze star for bravery during World War II. Here was a well-read, well-dressed man who built tourist cabins in his home town, Gaylord, Michigan. This man, who directed the school plays since 1949, was studying under a carpen- ter in his spare time to have the skill for building his cabins where he had planned to retire. This was a man who went to several universities, receiving his A.B. degree from Central Michigan College, and who had a hobby of cooking. He had charge of the NEW MOON from 1948 till 1953. He was a man who had traveled to Europe in the summer of 1955, planning to re-visit next summer, and worked at Falvey ' s Clothing Store when he was not traveling. This man didn ' t let enough of his perso nality show through his cover of shy reserve. He had his own quiet humor, and was an interesting conversationalist. He never indulged in gossip or pettiness. The school will miss his friendly ways, his gentlemanly man- ners, and his contributions to the school system. Mr. Hallenius loved the fields and woods of Gaylord, Michigan. The last Thespian group under Mr. Hallenius poses for a photo.
