The highlight of the Thursday night ' s performance was the junior- senior competition in which the seniors defeated the juniors 1 4 to 10. The competition was very close with the teams tied on two different occasions. The tug-of-war, which gave the seniors an additional three points, was the deciding factor of the competition. The student lead- ers were Charlie Thomas (seniors) and Bill Kubiak (juniors). T he first portion of the program was put on by the individual gym classes. One of the acts which has become tradition through the past few years was the comedy event entitled Guess the Title put on by the junior boys. This year the boys dramatized book titles, song titles, and the names of well-known television programs. Another act which has also become tradition is the senior girls ' marching drill, which was climaxed this year by the mass singing of the Niles Loyalty Song. The senior boys did calisthenics, the junior girls tap- danced and roller-skated, the sophomore girls did two dance routines, and the sophomore boys ran relays and played cage-boll. I ' ve been looking over some old yearbooks and school papers which brought back many memories. In our freshman year we became big shots in Jr. High. Diane Healy and Tim Tyler reigned over the Prom, the first formal dance for most of us. Bette Warnke and Diane Healy were our cheerleaders. Charlie Thomas, Tim Tyler, and Warren Marazita ruled the Student Council as president, vice-president, and treasurer respectively. Our sophomore year brought more changes as we entered Sr. High. Some of the boys qualified for varsity sports, and other members of the class be- came members of the choir, glee clubs, Sr. Band, or other student organiza- tions. This was the first year we were permitted to attend the Jr.-Sr. Prom. Sue Harrison, Mary Wellingham, and Bette Warnke were elected cheer- leaders. Our junior year began with the ordering of our class rings. Everyone was proud of them! We elected class officers with Bob Coates as president, War- ren Marazita, vice-president; Diane Healy, secretary; and Sue Harrison, treasurer. Our Jr. Class Play was Cheaper by the Dozen with Lois Stickney and John Wade playing the leads. Included in the cast were: Jim Roy, Bar- bara Brown, Sue Harrison, Mary Wellingham, Jackie Forbes, Dove Shannon, Tim Tyler, Jim Snyder, Karen Hunziker, Kay Homer, Don Pethick, Valerie Cook, John Rasmussen, Pat White, Margie Shook, Don Snyder, and Pat Ellis. We planned the Jr.-Sr. Prom and banquet, and chose April in Paris as the theme, carried out under the supervision of Marlene Boulton as chair- man of decorations. lKj At last we became Seniors! Our final year found Tim Tyler, Dove Shannon, Mary Wellingham, and Larry Hall as officers. The year began with Cleo Cray as Homecoming Queen and in her court, Shirley Acton and Janice Hickox. The New Moon was enlarged under the editorship of Sue Harrison. Mary Wellingham proved a very capable chairman of Homecoming. Next came the Snowball under the direction of Jo Rice. The Variety Show was a smash- ing success with its setting in New York City. In the latter part of March came the Gym Show with the Seniors winning the Jr.-Sr. Competition. The Band Bounce followed with Sue Harrison, Diane Healy, and Karen Hunziker as Melody Queen finalists. The Sr. Play was a comedy entitled Time Out for Ginger. The cast included Dave Shannon, Sue Harrison, Jim Roy, Tim Tyler, John Wade, Cecilia Armstrong, Stella Reed, Paula Hemphill, and George Foster. Competing with two hundred girls, Suzie Harrison was chosen for the first place award by the D.A.R. Mr. Zabel announced that Suzie Har- rison and Chariene Dreher were our two top students. Closing the year was the Prom. It was fun to have all the work done for us. Soon we ' ll receive our diplomas; and our high school days will be over, although we ' ll never forget them. As many as three hundred students have responsible tasks which they are performing under Council supervision. This mokes the students better equipped to take their place as citizens in cvr community. Each year the Snowball, one of the school ' s formal dances sponsored by the Council and preceding the Christmas holidays, is greeted with much enthusiasm by the students. An example of the work done by the Council is the Safety Committee. This committee works with the faculty, administration, parents, and townspeople to improve the safety in Niles. This year the committee has cut down greatly the amount of jay walking and reckless driving. Another activity that the Council sponsors is Student Government Day. On this day the winning politicians from Niles High School govern the city of Niles for an entire day. The candidates were Chester Brock, Mayor; Mary Wellingham, Clerk; Larry Williams, Treasurer; Bob Schmidt and Dave Knoll, Justices of the Peace, for the Democrats; and Tim Tyler, Mayor; Susie Harrison, Clerk; Charlie Works, Treasurer; and Riley Watkins and Dave Shannon, Justices of the Peace, for the Republicans. Other activities which the Student Council directs are Homecoming, Star, aftergame dances, student elections, candy sales. Holy Week program, Christmas decorations, buses to athletic events, and school improvements. In its visits to other schools the Council has observed that Niles High School is among the best in student responsibility and co-operation. The officers are Charley Thomas, President; John Wade, Vice-President; Cleo Gray, Secretary; and Jim Snyder, Treasurer. 34 Candy Sales Barbara Greene and Barbara Woad help two stu- dents select their candy. Homecoming Committee The Homecoming Committee of Karen Hunziker, Karen Truesdell, Marilyn Britton, Sue Harrison, Mary Wellingham, Sharon Young, Stella Reed, Cleo Gray, Nancy Keller, and Bette Warnke worked hard this year to make Homecoming a success. This year under the sponsorship of the Student Council, the New Moon has reached an all-time high in circulation. As a bi-monthly newspaper, the New Moon furnishes a variety of information for the student body. Sue Harrison, editor-in-chief, is assisted by Lucy Mark, assistant editor; Bob Coates, business manager; Margie Shook, headline editor; and Charlene Dreher, Elaine Lepel, and Ken Knauf, layout artists. Mr. Westerhof is the faculty advisor for the staff. Weekly meetings are held every Tuesday noon and paste-up every Tuesday after school. This year a special New Moon Week was included along with the paper ' s other activities. During the week of April 12-15 the Staff launched a campaign to increase sales to an all-time high, visited the lithographers in South Bend to learn how the paper was reproduced, organized a basket- ball game between the faculty and senior Varsity players, and sponsored a spring dance. Credit should also be given to the student body for their splendid support. 36 FFA In the past year our chapter awarded eighteen Creenhond and eight Chap- ter Farmer degrees. Also this past year Harry Foster received the American Farmer Degree. He was the first member of our chapter and of the county to receive this highest tribute. Activities of the year included three members winning the State FFA Land Conservation contest; five members attending the Notional Convention in Kansas City; the parliamentary procedure team winning first place in dis- trict and a gold rating in the regional contest; the planting of fifteen acres of wheat and sixteen acres of corn as cooperative project, and the planting of forty-five hundred pine seedlings on land leased from the New York Cen- tral Railroad. At the right ore the four pins significant of the degrees FFA members may attain. The first, at the lower right, is the bronze Creenhond pin signify- ing the endurance a member should have. Left and above is the silver Chap- ter Farmer pin, the highest degree awarded by the local FFA chapter. Next, above right, is the State Farmer pin made of the most precious metal, gold. It is symbolic of the growth and development the member has made in farm- ing. At the top is the coveted American Farmer medal in the form of a key signifying the unlocking of a larger field of endeavor. E. A. State Teachers ' Convention at Kalamazoo on October 8. Preparing for the Christmas time activities became the next and foremost aim of the choir members. Since the Christmas season lends itself well to music, the choir made many appearances singing traditional numbers. The Christmas Vespers given for the public on De- cember 5 opened the season. The choir then appeared for the Lions club, the City club, the Rotary club, and the Music club. To conclude the Christmas season, the choir sang for a stu- dent assembly program. The Planning Committee for the Variety Show began its work in December. On March 1 and 2 the Variety Show was presented to an enthusiastic audience. With the Variety Show completed, the choir began working on numbers for the County and State Music Festivals, held April 20 and May 7 respectively. The Berrien County Music Festival was held in Buchanan this year. In the morning each competing vocal group sings for the other groups and also for judication. In the afternoon the combined group of 700 students rehearses and then in the evening presents a concert for the public. The director was Mr. Carter, head of the vocal music at Western Michigan College. In the State Music Festival the choir participated with Class A choral groups for the first time. Mr. Severe is advisor of the literary staff. Editor-in-Chief Norma Cochran and her busy staff debate appropriate themes, decide page distribution for the various sections, work on write-ups, arrange picture schedules, and hope to meet the engraver ' s and printer ' s deadlines. Tours are conducted each year through printing and engraving plants to help acquaint the new members with the many problems in producing a good yearbook. Nancy Imus, Assistant Editor, was the TATTLER representative last sum- mer at the University of Michigan. Her report of the two weeks ' training in modern yearbook production helped the staff to formulate ideas later incor- porated in the 1955 TATTLER. For the first time the junior high section of the TATTLER was published by a Junior High Staff, who worked under the supervision of Lucy Mark. The Business Staff with Mr. Leiand Walker as advisor also had a full sched- ule. Selling advertisements is necessary to maintain the low cost of the TATTLER to the students. The importance of approaching the prospective advertiser and keeping receipts in order must be perfected by the sales staff. The second important problem of the Business Staff is to sell TATTLERS to the students. Each successive year a new sales record has been made. The social highlights of the year include a TATTLER signature dance, held on the day the TATTLERS are distributed to the students, and a banquet for the joint staffs held in May. This year the banquet was held at Sowbones on Sisters ' Lake. 48 EDITORIAL STAFF Standing: Eloine Lepel, staff artist; Mitzi Rapes, senior co-editor; Marilyn Haimbaugh, asst. photographer; Dale Griffee, intramurals co-editor, Barbara Wood, activities co-editor; John Rasmussen, organizations co-editor; Vance Johnson and Don McClure, sports co-editors; Mary Durm, photography editor; George Foster, organizations co-editor Seated: Nancy Imus, asst. editor-in-chief; Norma Cochran, editor-in-chief; Mr. Severe, lit- erary advisor; Lucy Mark, junior high advisor George Foster, Norma Cochran, Elaine Lepel, John Ras- mussen, and Mitzi Ropes, the senior members of the liter- ary staff n ' Ork on the senior class history. After many years Niles joined at last the ranks of Class A schools, and in doing so found some pretty tough competition. Nevertheless we wound up the season with a very respectable six won, two lost record, losing only to Grand Haven and Benton Harbor. The Vikes opened the season with a 24-12 victory over Marshall, as both teams tested their strength in their first games Then we piled up the biggest score in the memory of any townsfolk in routing Waller 69-0. In the last warm-up before the conference schedule opened, NHS ripped Culver Military Academy 28-0, as the Vikes revenged last year ' s loss. In the first conference game Niles had to overcome a late Buchanan rally to win 7-6; following this they rolled over St. Joe by a convincing 26-6 score. After dropping a heart-breaker to Benton Harbor 9-6, Grand Haven beat us on a snow-swept field for our only other loss of the season. The year ' s activities ended on a bright note, however, as Dowagiac went down to a 46-0 defeat, clinching the title for Niles. 60 1954 SCHEDULE Niles 24 Marshall 12 Niles 26 St. Joseph 6 Niles 69 Waller Niles 6 Benton Harbor 9 Niles 28 Culver Niles Grand Haven 7 Niles 7 Buchanan 6 Niles 46 Dowagiac BIG FOUR STANDINGS W L Niles 3 Buchanan 2 1 Dowagiac 1 2 St. Joseph 3 NHS COACHING STAFF Here pictured as football coaches and assistants. Some of the important phases in the program are: information, sl ill, interest, sportsmanship, a healthy body, and team work. The captains are elected from the gym class, and the players are chosen from the class. All the teams in the class compete with one another until one emerges as the champion of the class. Thus one team from each class represents that class. The tenth grade champion plays the twelfth grade champion and the ninth grade cham- pion plays the eleventh grade champion. The winners of these two games ploy each other for the intramural championship and their names are placed on the championship board. The intramural sports are speedball, basketball, volleyball, and Softball. Another gym class event is the annual free throw contest for boys. This contest was won by Warren Marazita, first place, Larry Campbell, second place, and Donald Perry, third place. The season was marked by several good showings against the Class A powers in the state. The Vikings kept up with Benton Harbor and Muskegon Heights for most of the games, losing only in the final minutes. This is an accomplishment, since both were ranked in the first three teams in the state. Another high point of the season was the victory over Washing- ton Clay ' s Colonials, who are always in the thick of the Indiana contests. In addition, Niles finished second in the conference standings. The Vikes entered the Regionals with an eight won, seven lost record and got off to a fast start by whipping Grand Rapids ' Creston, 67-47. But all local tournament hopes ended with the loss to Battle Creek in the second round. Some consolation, however, can be gained from the fact that Battle Creek went to the regional finals before losing to Benton Harbor in overtime. Niles scored almost a clean sweep in doubles, placing three of the four teams in the semifinal round. Our golf squad had one of the best records in years, even though it was an inexperienced team.
