Its purpose is to represent all phases of activities and events in Niles High School. The staff has made many improvements in the TATTLER: larger senior pictures, color, scrapbook-type snap pages, an index, and many more pages. We sincerely hope that you enjoy them. We wish to thank everyone who has contributed to the success of this fortieth edition of the TATTLER. In the future we hope it serves as the memorable record of the 1952-1953 school year. Joseph passed away February 15 after a long ill- ness. She was a graduate of Western Michigan College and did graduate work at Olivet College and Gregg College. She was chair- man of the Commercial Department and was active in many school and teacher organizations. Not only will Mary Joseph be long remembered by her pupils and fellow teachers, but the generous contributions by the Niles teach- ers to the Pawating Hospital fund have caused the hospital to call one of the rooms in the new addition the Mary Joseph room. 8 ROniNI TRRTION The 1953 TATTLER staff is proud to dedicate this year ' s issue of the TATTLER to Mr. Richard CorrelL During his years in Niles, Mr. Correll has been administrator of the Instrumental Music Department. In addition to his work as administrator, he teaches Senior band, orchestra, and marching band. With the capable direction of Mr. Correll, the band and orchestra have won many state contests. The Band Bounce is also presented annually under the direction of Mr. Correll. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and has done graduate work there. We are very grateful for his valuable contributions to NHS and he will be long remembered by those who have been in contact with him. 10 JOHN SCAMEHORN President FRED MARSHALL Secretary CLAYTON McCOY Treasurer IRVING SEELEY Trustee ORVILLE ADLER Trustee PAUL M. With all the joys that friends can treasure: This crew of ours with noble teachers sailed With blue and gold our colors hailed. Those were the days when we dreamed. Stayed up nights, and even scheme ' d: Worked with triangles, protractors, and such; Pounded on typewriters that needed just a touch; English 7 and 8 with all its compositions. Holding tight to Senior traditions. Spanish and Latin with all their tenses. That brings us generally to our senses. Then as our thoughts wander down the path of yore. Remember the knowledge we did explore? Doing history assignments from texts. Drawing maps, and wondering what comes next. Our thoughts happily return to sports rejoicing. At victories won, our cheers voicing. And now being Seniors our paths sever. All sailing away, parting forever. The silent halls once filled did ring. With laughter and joy we doth bring; Now each is seeing his own lane. Hoping to accomplish this great aim. And now as we the class of fifty-three A great and promising future see And having expressed with all our hearts Sorrow when time has come to part. STUDENT COUNCIL The Senior High Student Council under the sponsorship of Mr. Nieboer is an active organization which attempts to serve all the students socially and educationally in co-operation with the administration. As many as two hundred students have a responsible tasic which they are performing under Council supervision. They help to make our school a better school in which students are more equipped to take their place as good citizens in our community. This student body has accomplished the following things this year: Homecoming, STAR, Snowball Dance, after-game dances, and Student Government Day. In its visits to other schools the Council has observed that Niles High School Is among the best in student responsibility and co-operation. The officers are Harry Foster, president; Ted Knott, vice-president; Jane Grathwohl, secretary; and Sharon Lynd, treasurer. 46 Row 3: Don Vandenberg, Anita Frucci, Janet Gonser, Pat Barlow, Shirley Corwin, Shirley McNitt, Rose- mary McWilliams, Marjorie Schoff, Loretta Marquardt, Bob Dulin, Pat White, Lorraine Pethick. STAR Organization The STAR Organization is a voluntary group of students under the supervision of Thomas Rough, who is responsible to the Council. This organization is now in its second year; and its many members have given service to their school by promoting order, courtesy, and adherence to regulations and by assisting in hall and cafeteria duties. As in all forms of student activities there are those who fail to carry out their own responsibilities. The STAR Organization, however, can be proud of its contribution in making a better school. The STAR can be successful only if the student body co-operates. A successful STAR Organization doesn ' t restrict freedoms in the school; it insures the freedom for everyone. 47 Row Row F;,w 1: Siniy Fraser, Sandra Jones, Ted Knott, Jack Kubiak, Roger Bunker, John Petruska, Fred Schaen, Fete Roc ' gers, Greg Morden, Gary Hargreaves. NEW MOON The New Moon has been reorganized this year and is now sponsored by the Student Council. It has been greatly improved in appearance, for it is printed in off-set type and contains pictures. Since it has been accepted with much more interest and wider distribution, it is no longer a struggling paper in danger of failure. The way has been prepared for expansion and for a higher quality of journalism. Credit should be given to Mr. Carl Hallenius and Karien Cook, who did much of the pioneering. The great successes which have been achieved this year are due to the conscientious work of editor-in-chief, Joan Brand; business manager, Don Van Kampen; the four page editors, Jane Pifer, Dorothy Greenhoe, Sandy Fraser, and Mary Frucci; and to Mr. Alf Rasmussen, who type-sets the headlines. 48 Row 5: Pat- Spanbauer, Pat Grimes, Peggy Grimes, Kay Weaver, Marjorie Shook, Phoebe Wienke, Judy DePoy, Shirley Dickeson, Lois Stickney, Arlene DePeel, Gwen Peters. Pre-school marching practices were climaxed with an appearance of the band at the Riverview Tournament of Bands where it took first place. Then the band was kept busy with football games, pep meetings, and civic functions. Mid-way through the marching season the band participated in the Fall Marching Festival, which was held at St. Joseph where they received a first division rating in class A competition. After the football season, the marching band became a concert band and pre- sented its first League Concert on November 25. A pep band was organized to play for basketball games and pep meetings. On January 13 and 14 the twenty- seventh annual Band Bounce was presented. The band also participated in the Dis- trict Band and Orchestra Festival in Kalamazoo on March 20 and played its last con- cert on May 15. .51 Row 5: Judy DePoy, )im Hoskins, Kathleen McNulty, Russell Noggle, John Rasmussen, Charlene Dreher, Ruth Van Kampen, Eddie Demske, Judy Trussell, Robert Johnson. This year they also sang in the County Music Festival in St. Joseph. Officers elected this year for the Boys ' Glee Club include president, Harry Foster; vice-president, Wayne Hentsch; and secretary-treasurer, Roger Bunker. For the Girls ' Glee Club the officers include president, Jane Pifer; vice-president, Ann Marshall; and secretary-treasurer, Sandy Fraser. In addition to these thirty-four acres, they have leased one hundred acres of land for 1953 co-operative projects. The chapter also purchased a registered Duroc boar for an addition to the Duroc Swine Chain. Four officers attended the Leadership Training Camp at Clear Lake Camp near Dowling, Michigan, in September. In October two delegates were sent to Kansas City, Missouri, for a week to attend the National FFA Convention. Niles won the District Parliamentary Procedure Contest and participated in the Agricultural Demon- stration Contest and Public Speaking Contest in February. Four FFA teams entered the State Contests in June — the Dairy Judging team received a Gold Award, Dairy Products team a Silver Award, Poultry Judging team a Silver Award, and Livestock Judging team a Bronze Award. The Senior Band under the direction of Richard V. Correll played El Capitan March, high lights from Porgy and Bess, The Northern Pines, Suite of Old American Danes, La Cumparsita, My Hero, and Manhattan Beach March. The Junior High Band, conducted by Miss Charleen Jones, played Alan -a -Dale, The Three Pigs, and The Gladiator. The third portion of the program was entitled Bottom Watermelon — With all due apologies to Phil Silvers and his hit Top Banana. The term top banana originated in burlesque and was used to designate the leading comedian. Since the band did not have a leading comedian, it was necessary for them to look to the bottom of the patch, hence the name Bottom Watermelon. A few novelty acts made up this por- tion of the program. The Girls ' Sextet and Boys ' Quartet concluded this section. Jane Pifer was crowned the 1953 Melody Queen, and her court consisted of Julia Krieger and Sharon Lynd. The Finale, The University Grand March played by the combined Junior and Senior Bands, concluded an ent ertaining program. 1 64 JUNIOR PLAY Best Foot Forward, was presented by the Junior Class in November 14 and 15, 1952. The play was directed by Mr. Car! Hallenius, and the student director was Fred Schaen. In the play Bud Hooper, a student at Winsocki Prep School, in- vited movie star Gale Joy to be his date for the Prom; and much to his amazement she accepted. Bud wrote his regular girl Helen not to come because he was sick. Helen, however, found out that he wasn ' t ill and arrived several hours after Gale Joy to complicate the situation. The cast included Gary Hargreaves as Bud; Gail Kaiser, Gale Joy; Nancy Hahn, Helen; Bob McKimmey, Doctor Reeber; Dick Kasprzak, Gale ' s publicity agent; Norman Bradley, Fred Schaen, Edgar Hasse, and Duane Egmer were Bud ' s school chums; and Dorothy Greenhoe, Ruth Me ckel, Carol Jones, and Jeanne Ward were their dates. Others in the cast included Jim Hoskins, Jim Buchan, Chuck Leddin, and Carol Repine. Committee chairmen were Rollie Baumgartner, publicity; Fred Schaen, stage; Grace Park and Pat Freyer, properties; and Barbara Lueders, tickets. VARIETY SHOW The annual Variety Show was presented on February 24 and 25 by the Vocs! Music Department, under the direction of Mr. George Flora. Opening the program was the Ninth Grade Choir, followed by the Ninth Grade Double Sextet. These two groups, under Mrs. Alma Hosier ' s direction, gave varied selections. The Senior High Vocal groups, the Girls ' and Boys ' Glee Clubs, the Choir, the Sextet, and the Quartet, next appeared on the program, intermingling through- cut the show music of every type, from spirituils to the very popular. As breaks in the vocal part of the program, two rollicking skits, His First Shave and It ' s In the Book, were presented. Concluding the regular part of the show, a brass sex- tet offered two numbers. The Fantasy always the high light of the Variety Show, presented Memories of the Charleston Era. Complete with music from the twenties, an after-game dance featuring the champion Charlestoners, a scene after the dance at the girls ' dorm, and a trip to the campus Sugar Bowl, the Fantasy was highly entertaining. Several cast members offered solos with professional-like ability, while genuine Charleston Era costumes added to the gaiety of the production. It can safely be said that the 1953 Variety Show was a hjge success. STUDENT SERVICES Library Assistants Office Assistants Noon Projector Operators Noon Activities ' Ushers Office Trainees Teacher Assistants 68 CAREER DAY 0 n the afternoon of November 13, the students of the Senior High School participated in the Third Annual Career Day. The afternoon consisted of two discus- sion periods during which the students heard the advantages and disadvantages of two careers they were interested in. Successful resource people engaged in the dif- ferent careers were invited to speak to the groups. Students were told that a good vocational choice is a great contributing factor to a happy and successful life. The splendid cooperation between the people of Niles and the school was the result in part of the successful work of the Career Day Committee, consisting of the Niles Chamber of Commerce representatives, the Niles Public School rep- resentatives, and the student representatives who were Harry Foster, Keith Healy, Janyce Ullrey, and Martha Krueger. Only Goshen, John Adams of South Bend, and the conference champs, Dowagiac, could outscore but not outfight a team plagued by key injuries all season. The Niles Vikings with a new coach, Terry Carey, continued their long win- ning streak of the past two years by downing Chicago Roosevelt 28-0. The next week the Vikes made another convincing victory as they beat Brighton 26-0. The following week Goshen, led by their all conference back, Pug Hoover, handed the Niles Vikings their first defeat in twenty-one games. At the end of this heartbreaking game, the score was 13-0. Niles versus Buchanan was one of the toughest battles of the year for both teams. The score at the end was a deserved 0-0. The next game was successful as the Vikes beat St. Joseph 6-2 in another tough game. The following game was a different story as the Vikings lost to John Adams of South Bend, 20-6. On Hallowe ' en night the Niles Vikings ventured to Grand Haven for a 13-0 victory. The last game of the season was a very important one, as it was to determine the conference champions. In this rugged game Dowagiac defeated the Niles Vikings 12-6 after a hard fight. The city of Niles and its rabid fans presented a series of banquets for the fine team and coaches high lighted by the Nile3 City Club ' s 17th annual football banquet at the Elks. Ralph Guglielmi and Coach Joe McArdle of Notre Dame were the featured speakers of the evening. Coach Terry Carey introduced the intrepid co-captains Dick Dunham and Harry Foster. 74 Row 5: Coach Theus, Mgr. Norm Bradley, Charles Batson, John Burge, Jerry Secor, Jim Turtle, Mgr. The Homecoming is the time of year when all alumni gather and relive the good old days when they were underclassmen. Miles was defeated by Dowagiac 12 to 6 at the Vikings Homecoming game. Charlie Thomas made the Vikes ' only touchdown on a 40-yard handout-play. The winning of this game gave Dowagiac the first conference title in 10 years. Of the many contestants. Donna Davis, Mary Jo Young, and Madelyn Thomas were the three finalists for the Homecoming Queen. During the halftime of the football game, Mary Jo Young was crowned Queen. Both Niles and Dowagiac students attended the Homecoming dance after the game. Tony Rulli and his orchestra furnished the dance music. Senior basketball players: D. Conrad, M. Dreher, J. Winger, and G. Steeby VARSITY BASKETBALL The 1952-53 basketball season was not a success by the won and lost column, but Coach Theus and his squad had their successful moments. The schedule was the toughest of recent years. When Niles lost, the Vikings lost to the best. The first game resulted in a second half defeat for Niles from South Bend Washington, 35-50. The second game went to Grand Haven by 31 to 47. Dowagiac was the first victim in a 59 to 50 score, but it was a different story when St. Joseph outscored Niles 47 to 40 in a very good game. A tough South Bend Riley downed the Vikings 63 to 41 and Grand Haven beat Niles for the second time by 56 to 41, but Niles bounced back to stop Sturgis 52 to 45. The Big Four champions of Buchanan clipped Niles 56 to 41. The next game was probably the most exciting game of the season. The Vikings, trailing by one point in the last few seconds of the game, went ahead to win over Culver 49 to 48 when Gary Steeby made a long shot just as the buzzer sounded. Such good teams as Three Rivers, Holland Christian, Lindbloom of Chicago, Dowagiac, Buchanan, and Benton Harbor beat the Theus men, but Niles did defeat the future Class B champions from St. Joseph 62 to 52 near the season ' s close. For the fourth time in five years Niles drew St. Joseph for the first game of the tournament. Niles almost upset the state champions of 1953 by leading by several points midway in the fourth quarter. Next year the successful junior varsity should help the returning lettermen and Pop Theus in making a bigger and better team for the bigger and tougher schedule in 1953-54. 80 Row 3 Row 2 Row 1 Manager )im Mclntyre, Tony Mason, Al Ruetz, jim Scott, jim Anderson, Manager Harry Foster. They have sponsored several Junior High dances and a Red Cross drive. The Council operated the lost and found case where candy sales were conducted daily. Left- handed desks were purchased for many of the Junior High students. They also contributed to the Viking Handbook. Membership was composed of ten elected representatives from each class in Junior High School. The officers include Carol Hamilton, president; Bob Klingler, vice-president; Margie Thomas, secretary; and Sharon Walter, treasurer. 108 Row 3: Bonnie O ' Brien, Suzanne Garns, Ruth Jorgensen, Margaret Slight, Bill Fletcher, Suzi£ Miller, Suzie Rippingille, Patty Decker, Leiane Mell. Since its beginning four years ago, the paper has made great pirogress. Now a Student Council activity instead of a class project, it is called the Junior High Forecaster and comes off the press every two weeks. The articles are many and varied while the paper itself is larger. Miss Steele sponsors the Forecaster, and Mr. Westerhof supervises the print- ing. The editor is Kay Kiger, the assistant editor is Sandy Smith, and circulation manager is Diane Baird. 109 9th GRADE DOUBLE SEXTET Row 2: Mary Bround, Judy Bacon, Marilyn Mayhew, Barbara Green, Gina Barron, Sandra Jones. Under the direction of Mrs. Hosier, the Freshman Choir and Double Sextet, and the Eighth Grade Triple Trio are very active performers. They have appeared for auditorium programs, the Christmas program. Holy Week, and the Variety Show. Members of all three groups are chosen by Mrs. Hosier. The Choir and Double Sextet are the most active of the three; yet, the Triple Trio has made great progress for its first year. JUNIOR HIGH BAND Junior High bandsmen take pride in making their band one of the best junior high-school bands in this district. Throughout the year activities challenge the musicianship of every member. Many of the bandsmen are also members of the marching band. Soloists, en- sembles, and the full band compete in the annual district contest at Kalamazoo. At home the band plays for league concerts, junior high assemblies, grade school programs, and an occasional basketball game. Officers for the year are: Richard Morey, president; Jerry Rossow, vice- president; Carol Hamilton, secretary; Don Pierce, treasurer; and Jerry Peterson, uniform manager. 112 JHS CHEERLEADERS Row 2: Pat Pifer, Pat Cottrell, Brenda Walters, Olivia Biggs, Torchy Marshall, Karen Truesdell. NINTH GRADE FOOTBALL The Niles Freshmen had a very successful football season, winning four and losing one against class A competition. Only one te m during the season, Misha- waka, was able to score a touchdown against a very strong defense. High light of the season was the victory over a strong Washington teem from South Bend, 8-2. The 1952 Frosh were exceptionally deep in material and should help to strengthen our varsity the next three years.
