I'3Jb0w'fff-1' MR. GEORGE FLORA SENIOR HIGH DEDICATION It is with great pride that we, the students of Niles Senior High School, dedi- cate the l95l Tattler to Mr. George Flora. ln addition of being a graduate of De Paul and Northwestern Universities, he has done graduate work at the University of Michigan and Columbia University. As head of the Music Department, Mr. Flora has won the admiration of not only the students, but also the townspeople of Niles. Through his eFforts, the choir and the two glee clubs have advanced immeasurably. Such productions as the annual Variety Show and Christmas programs have been made possible through Mr. Flora's able direction. We thank you, Mr. Flora, for a iob well done. 2 ADMINISTRATION This fine yearbook portrays the outstanding program of educational activities in our school. It also reflects the progressive work that has been done by the people of Niles in developing this program. . MAX S. SMITH Past S erintendent Schools The Tattler is proud in pre- senting our new superintendent of schools, Paul M. Winger. This past semester he has been splitting his time between two schools, but we'Il see and hear much more of him next year. WALTER J. ZABEL Principal PAUL M. WINGER Superintendent of Schools I am happy for the opportunity to add a line to your l95l Tattlerp to congratulate you upon the record of your accomplishments, and to salute you for the opportunity which is yours in further service to education in our time. Upon the gradu- ates of high schools in the United States rests an important responsibility for the security and strength of our democracy. I am confident that you will continue in the 'future as in the past to dis- charge your responsibilities not only with zeal, sympathy, and intelligence, but with a sense of dedication as well. ww: .z3wW 3 V l l r t l l r BOARD OF EDUCATION JOHN SCAMEHORN President FRED MARSHALL Secretary CLAYTON MCCOY Treasurer ROBERT MARKS Trustee LEWIS WALTON Trustee Continued development of long range construc- tion plans to meet Niles' educational building needs has been the aim of the Niles School Board. That aim has been met to a great extent with the completion of the Westside School and near com- pletion of new northside and southside schools. In addition modern improvements have been made to the Central Elementary and Junior-Senior High School. Efforts of the board plus support of the peo- ple have made these improvements possible. Work will be continued slowly over a period of years until over crowded conditions are relieved. Goodbye to class quizzes, Those dear old C. Q.'s Farewell to English classes r With their exceptions to the rules. So long to speech class And iostling cafeteria lines, To geometric figures- Tangent, secant, and sine. How we'll miss government With chapters four through eleven due, And history with all its dates That no one ever knew. So long to shorthand, Never again a typing drill. No more laughing at teacher's iokes lHow we will miss Old Billll Of course there's Latin and Spanish, Agriculture, printing, and more. And doing all our homework Proved to be a chore. But gee, I'lI sort of miss The field trips we took, And there's lots of learning That didn't come from books. Plays, band, and orchestra. Clubs, and student council too, Variety Show and government day, And teams fighting for the gold and blue. A. would be a wonderful experience for students interested in teaching as a profession. These future teachers are con- stantly working for the qualities which are essential to a good teacher and the development of leadership. This is the second year that the Future Teachers of America has been organ- ized in Niles High School under the charter received from the National Education Association. The students gain experience in teaching in the classroom through the cadet teaching program. They learn facts about the profession in their own locality, state, and nation and the opportunities in it. Some of the speakers on the agenda have been Miss Dorothy Hoyt, Mr. Tracy Stockman, and Mr. Max Smith. Two girls' will be chosen by the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority to attend an F. T. A. workshop at St. Mary's Camp near Battle Creek later this year. Best of luck to you, the future teachers of America! 41 Row Row Row Row Row Row Row Row Row Row Row Adler, Allen, D. Undefeated and untied! That, in a u ell, is the story of the 1950 Varsity l Football tea m. x gl 1 , Under the fine leadership of head coach Al Lewis, backfield coach Bob Theus, and assistant coach Bill Wall, the team started practicing late in August for the opening game. The Vikings got oft to a good start by submerging Hillsdale in a non-confer- ence game 30-0. A week later in their first conference tilt, the Vikes turned in a convincing 20-0 victory at South Haven. The following week the Vikes showed their defensive strength as they beat Dowagiac 14-0. A week later at Kalamazoo the Vikes came out on the long end of a 19-O score by beating the State High Cubs. Then came the big game. St. Joe, undefeated in their new Dickinson Stadium, was our opponent. The Vikes won 14-0 after a hard game. The following Friday the Vikes annexed their sixth straight victory of the sea- son as they blasted Buchanan 20-7. Then they grabbed their seventh straight win of the year as they trimmed Marshall 19-6. The Vikings completed the first unbeaten, untied season in the history of Niles as they whipped Three Rivers 26-14. Niles' football team received another honor when big Larry Sholtey, Viking guard, was selected as an All-State player by the Detroit Free Press. Again this was the first time in the history of Niles that a local football player had ever been chosen as an All-State star. 58 Row Row Raw Row Max Shepardson, Bob Plumb, Harold Rose, Bob Wolters, Bill Hayes, Jim Bowers, Fred Krieger, Bill Baxter Jerry Adler John Shoefl Mr. Whitwam, Tom Crocker, John Armstrong, George Jerdon, Ronald Dunham lCo-Capt.l, Tom Reidenbach lCo Captl Harry Foster, Leslie Miller, Larry Sholtey, Jim Chrzan, Coach Lewis Russell Saathott, Kendall Kirk, Larry Shoemaker, Jack Zimmer, Ronald Pingle, Phil Marrs, Albert Marazita Lazelle Davis Donald Ernsberger, Pat Neesley Phil Parker lMgr.l, George Garnes, Dick Armstrong, Charles Allen, Dick Dunham, Bob Coons lMgr.l Dick Peterson lM9f-l Date Sept. l5 Sept. 22 Sept. 29 Oct. 6 Oct. More important than the record, however, is the fact that Coach Wall developed many promising players for next year's Varsity. Although they didn't win many of their dual meets, they met success in their invitational meets, and they placed second in the state meet. The Viking Harriers lost their first meet to powerful Mishawaka by a close score. ln their next appearance they placed second to Alma in the Hastings Invita- tional. The Harriers then trounced Benton Harbor by a decisive margin. The Vikes lost the next two dual meets to Kalamazoo Central and to Benton Harbor. However, the Vikes rebounded to place first in the Albion Invitational at Albion. After winning their final dual meet against Albion, the Vikings placed second in the state meet at Ypsilanti to end a successful season. Against their first opponent, South Bend Washington, the Vikings did not fare too well. The invading Panthers triumphed 53-48 over the Vikes. In their first conference tilt, the Vikes humbled State High 45-26. From this point on the Vikes really became hot. The cagers tumbled South Haven 55-40, Dowagiac 66-35, and St. Joseph 62-59. Against Three Rivers the Vikings overcame a 15 point deficit to topple that opponent. A high point in the season came when Jim Chrzan set the league scoring record with 36 points as the Vikings swamped Buchanan 74-37. The Vikes went on to beat Lindbloom of Chicago, 54-51, State High 70-43, South Haven 63-43, and Sturgis 56-45. Then came the let down. Against a poorly rated but highly inspired Dowagiac team, the Vikes went down 40-37. However, the Vikings regained their winning form as they tripped St. Joseph 48-44 to hold on to their conference lead. After smashing Three Rivers 57-47, and Buchanan 63-24, the Vikes edged strong Class A Benton Harbor 50-48. After the Vikes won the first game of the district tournament from Dowagiac, the Vikings failed to click against St. Joseph in the second game. The Vikings of l95O-l95l, by winning all but three of their games, and by annexing the conference championship, proved themslves to be a great team that will go down as being one of the finest in Niles' history. Much credit should go to the head coach, Bob Theus, and his assistant coaches, Don Bender, and Richard Skyles. Without the efforts of these coaches the Vikings might not have fared so well this year. One last word of thanks should go to the Junior Varsity. By winning all ex- cept three of their games this season, they gave us good reason to predict that Niles' basketball teams will continue to be great in the seasons ahead. 64 BASKETBALL-VARSITY Row 3: Richard Peterson, Jack Zimmer iMgr.l, Harold Lewis lMgr.l, Duane Mayhew lMgr.l, Dick McNeil Row 2: Coach Theus, Lazell Davis, Norman Mead, Jim Chrzan, Larry Sholtey, Fred Krieger, Dick Cooper, Mr. Whitwam Row 1: Phil Marrs, Tom Crocker, Skip Morris, Jerry Knoll, Ted Curtis, Ronnie Pingel, Leslie Miller Not in Picture: Pat Neesley CONFERENCE STANDINGS Team Won Lost Niles ,............,. 1 St. Joseph ....... 3 Three Rivers 3 Dowagiac .... 7 South Haven 8 State High ..... 9 Buchanan .... 11 VARSITY SCHEDULE Date Opponent Place Dec. They won all but two dual meets and defeated all comers in the triangular, invitational, con- ference, and state meets. Niles lost only to South Bend Central in the opener and to rugged Mishawaka, twelve days later. The inter-class meet of the cindermen at the beginning of the season saw the seniors 1501 winning with sixty points over the second place sophomores 1521 with 33 points and third place juniors 1511 with 28. Niles ably demonstrated its power at the expense of eighteen other schools at the Hastings relays on April 22. Again at Kalamazoo on April 29 the strong squad defeated ten other schools. For the fourth straight year Niles won the conference championship. ln the regional meet at Kalamazoo and again at the state meet at East Lansing, Niles Trackmen clearly demonstrated their superiority by winning over a strong field. Not only was there team strength but there were also some new individual records established. David Berquist set a new conference record on 22.4 seconds in the 180 yard low hurdles during the triangular meet with State High and St. Joseph on May 2. A new school and regional record of 21.2 in the low hurdles was also set by the hard-running Berquist. Jim Pollock set a new school and track record in the half-mile during the triangular meet with Benton Harbor and Washington of South Bend. Tyler topped that record with a 2:O1.1 performance in the conference meet held at Niles. These boys, the great team, and Coach Hatcher are to be congratulated for their fine season performance. The Vikings got off to a good start by smothering Washington Clay and continued winning over Riley, Three Rivers, Dowagiac, South Bend Central Catholic, and State High, nearly all by sizable scores. Then St. Joseph dealt our boys their only conference defeat in a hard-fought contest.
