We hope that we have accomplished our aim. We feel that this Tattler Will not only bring back memories of your high school days, but that it will remind you of what is perhaps the greatest thing in our life time-the end of World War ll. But springing from this great conflict comes our own big task, which is winning the peace. We will start now with the first peace-time Tattler in four years. We hope you like it! A graduate of Western Michigan College of Education, Mr. Gebloy accepted his first teaching position here in the fall of 1928 and has remained a member of the Niles High School faculty. Printing, machine shop, wood shop, and mechanical drawing are his specialties: in fact, he was the first to teach printing in Niles High School. At the present time he is teaching machine shop. In his eighteen years here he has interested many boys in mechanical trades. This has helped them in some cases to choose their life's work. ln addition to his work in regular classes, he had charge of the War Training Pro- gram, and thus helped prepare men for industrial jobs during the war emergency. . It is in recognition of the inspiration which Mr. Gebby has given to gradu- ates of our school, that the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Forty-six dedicates its yearbook. 4 f , v f f X2 KW 1 ' x! , 4 V I A fl! The band started the school year by marching and playing at six of the home football games. It then continued its rapid pace by playing at several of the business men's clubs. On March 22 it entered the District Festival at Kalamazoo and received a first division rating. This entitled it to enter the State Festival on April l3 in East Lansing. As We go to press the band has just returned with a second division rating. ln this Festival only two of twenty-seven Class B bands received first division ratings, while more than half received third and fourth division ratings. This was the first time in many years that the band had entered either a District or State Festival. The trip was made possible by the Instru- mental Music League, which is made up of parents of members of the band and other interested citizens. On April 4th and Sth the band presented the 22nd Annual Band Bounce fsee page 691. The officers of the band are Leonard Corey, Presidentp Bill Hahn, Vice-president: and Delcie Iohnson, Secretary. 40 THE CHOIR Sixth Row: Donna Mittan, Marjorie Ann Young, Barbara lohnson, loan Carlson, Anne Kompass, Eugene Fender, Charles Geishert, Bill Brown, Stephen Peterson, Mary Alice Wolf, Marilyn Moore, Betty Geishert, Idarnae Gillette Fifth Row: Peggy Kuebli, Barbara Van Tuyl, Phyllis Cochran, Ioyce Clark, Ronald Gosline, Charles Eden, Roger Garst, Norman Cross, Dorothy Anderson, Barbara Smith, Mary Bunbury, Marion Walker Fourth Row: Mary lane Gay, Mary lane Frucci, Kathryn Rogers, Norma lean SalisbuIYt lames Gil' lette, lohn Kasler, Stanley Radewald, Herbert Young, Rosemary Whiteside, Thera Kerr, Ioan Kerr, Dorothy McCormick Third Row: Marilyn Bailey, Vivian Cochran, Sara Ricks, lohn Gillespie, lack Parker, Harold Kauf- man, Dale Foster, Doris Eggleston, Ethel Eldridge, Beverly Wellingham, Marilyn Handshaw Second Row: Helen Kizer, Barbara Calder, Ianice Kelley, Patricia Matthews, Richard Hart, Garland Stanley, Ioseph Funk, Thomas Sctrratore, Marcie Whiteside, Mary Wetmore, Ianyce Miars First Row: Lillian Merritt, Hannah Paddock, Donald Burbank, David Graham, Elaine Rutherford, Mr, Flora, Russell Shoemaker, Raymond Hochmuth, Nona Leuders, Ioan Cogswell, Mary Lou Smith, Gladys Howell The Choir was under the direction of Mr. George Flora this year. The main event of the year was the Vocal Festival held in St. loseph on March 27. The choir also gave several concerts before the various clubs and groups of Niles. The choir has done a fine job this year. lts membership reached about sixty-five students who came to school an hour early three mornings a week for practices. Next year it will miss Elaine Rutherford, who has been accompan- ist for several years. Also appearing with the choir have been two small groups who should be commended for their work-the girls' sextet and the boys' octet. Although last year the orchestra did not play for the Band Bounce, this year they appeared in the production. Playing at the Commencement exercises rounded out their program for the year. The orchestra this year was made up of both lunior and Senior High School players, and held its rehearsals before school in the morning. It has done exceptionally Well this year despite cc late start and a lack of players for stringed instruments. During the past year they met on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. They participated in soccer, speedball, basketball, bowling, volley ball, and softball. Their business meetings were held on the first Friday noon of each month. Included in their program were hayrides, hikes, swimming parties, and bicycle jaunts. This year's initiation was held in Ianuary when they conferred memberships on thirty-six girls. Girls who have amassed 600 points receive numeralsy 1200, their minor N, and l600, their major N. The most outstanding point accumulation on record was made by their l945 president, Eleanor Yaw, who had well over 1600 points at the end of her junior year. The members of the G. A. Athletic events, plays, and teachers' forums are the chief activities the club ushers for. This year the club also made the Red Cross collections at our local theaters. The duties of the girls range from taking tickets, passing out programs, showing people to their seats, to taking care of the coat roorn at the games. These girls have given up rnuch for their Work, and are entitled to the group trip to Chicago, which is being planned. Along with these girls, there are ticket takers, ticket sellers, door watchers, dressing room assistants, and many others, who must be on duty early and stay until all the fans have left. In addition to this group is a squad of boys who relinquish their gym class time to put up the bleachers for basketball games and take them down on the Saturdays following the games. We would like to express our thanks to these people for all the fine work they have done to make the sports events run as smoothly as possible. 49 GIRLS' OFFICIALS CLUB Irene Greichen, Elda Mae Yaw, Grace Singer, Kathryn Rodgers, Barbara Simpson, Ruth Welsh, Ruth Linsenmier, Eleanor Yaw, Betty Donley, Margaret Mead, Norma Stafford, Betty lean McGrew, Miss Sprague Under the capable leadership of Miss Sprague, the Girls' Offficials Club is completing its first year of sports officiating. These lessons are put into practice during gym periods when the club members assist her in the refereeing and coaching of soccer, speedball, basketball, softball, and volleyball. The Hi-Y is a Y. M. C. A. sponsored club for high school boys. Hi-Y was first organized in the spring of '45, but it didn't get rolling until the fall of '45. lt is all one big club with four chapters. The chapters are the Vikings, Royal, Wolverines, and the Big Four. Since the clubs are so new, they are still under the close scrutiny of the Y. M. C. A. Secretary, Mr. Harold Baker. Recently the Viking chapter set up a new school paper, the Viking Press, in an effort to bring Hi-Y even closer to the school, Hi-Y groups are a Wonderful opportunity for the boys of the school to get together and do constructive things for the school and community, and also to have enjoyment as a group. We hope that the Hi-Y will continue to grow, and in turn, be able to do more for our high school. 5l TRI-I-ll-Y Fifth Row: Mary Alice Wolf, Betty Brumtield, Norma Stafford, Patricia Righter, Marion Walker, Winifred Anderson, Betty Wages, Norma lean Lunn, Ethel Eldridge, Marie l-loven, Shirley Cooper, Anne Kompass, Barbara Smith, Dorothy McCormick Fourth Row: Frances Stratton, Delores Merrill, Nancy Robinson, Susanne Bauer, Wanda Weaver, Phyllis Russell, Verda Wilcox, Marjorie Cusick, Ioan Hoffman, Peggy Dickeson, lean Siebert, Georgiana Timm, Ioan Kerr, Sally Burris Third Row: Shirley Lambiotte, Adamureene Hassinger, Evelyn Burge, Mary lane Frucci, layne Griffee, Delcie Iohnson, Marjorie Ann Young, Ida Mae Gillette, Audrey Leiting, Beverly Schmidt, Donna Smith, Dorothy Anderson, Shirley Bedinger, lane McVeigh Second row: Phyllis Wilken, loan Weist, Betty Luke, Gloria Baird, Sally Roberts, Ienny Thomas, Mary Burdue, Beverly Hanct, Vivian Williams, Barbara Williams, Betty Lundberg, Norma Bates, Carolyn Gulbranson First Row: Christina Iohnson, Doris Hulett, Irene Hipshier, Betty Hahn, Miss Finkel, Miss Parker, Mary Lou Merritt, Beverly Ewert, Jacqueline Anderson, Evelyn McLaughlin The Tri-Hi-Y are rather new organizations in Niles. They were started by the Y. M. C. A. about a year ago and are now under the direction of Harold Baker. F our clubs were organized during the first year-the Alpha Thy, the Teenettes, the Potawotomies, and the Otokywas. The purpose of the organiza- tion is: To create, maintain, and extend throughout school and community high standards of Christian character. Programs, including religious, social, educational, and recreational activi- ties, are planned by the club officers with the help of the advisors. Over sixty girls are now in the membership of these clubs. After graduation, however, the senior girls' club, Alpha Thy, will be dissolved, and another club made up of younger girls will take its place. In this way the organization in Niles will continue to grow and progress for years to come. 52 PROTECTOR OPERATORS Left to Right: james Burnham, Daniel Parsons, lack Kirkendall, lack Crouch, Murl Lindsey, Gary Huber, Mr. Rasmussen, Fred Koontz, Ronald Grafe, Robert Grahl, Gene Balknap The projector operators were useful this year in showinq films to individual classes in the projection room and at auditorium programs, They also showed several movies to outside groups such as downtown clubs and Parent-Teacher Associations. Only boys with above average :grades are accepted as pro- jector operators since the time it takes comes out of study halls. They developed as the season progressed and in their final few games were as good as any team in the conference with the possible exception of St. loseph. The team opened the season against South Bend Catholic and battled them to a scoreless tie. They were then routed by a strong South Bend Central Catholic, l9 to O. ln our first conference game we met and defeated South Haven. After this came a speedy Buchanan team and a strong, hard charging St. loseph club. We were defeated by both of these teams. Mr. Ham then conceived the idea of moving Hradel from end to fullback. We then defeated the last three teams, Dowagiac, State High, and Three Rivers, in short order. The offensive leader this year was Shorty Coleman, but he was ably supported by loe Funk, Tom Sarratore, Norm Arnold, Fred Cribbs, and later by Bill Hradel. ln the line, Captain Bob Burge was a boulder on defense as were Bill Barthel, Dick Mitchell, Dave Korman, and Len Corey. Eugene Ieep Gorton played an outstanding game at end both on offense and defense. All in all this was a very successful season for our Viking footballers. t 57 THE SQUAD Name Weight Height Pos. ikNorm Arnold 145 5' 9 HB 'l'Bi1l Barthel 220 5' 10 T Richard Block 212 5' 11 G George Boller 155 5' 9 E lack Bunbury 175 ,5' 11 G il'Bob Burge lCapt.l 160 5' 10' C iGene Cannady 150 5' 9 C 'kArt Coleman 150 5' 7 HB 'FA1 Conover 160 5' 11 G 'kLeonard Corey 165 5' 10 T iFred Cribbs 160 5' 10' FB -'Ioe Funk 145 5' 9 QB Roger Garst 160 5' 11 FB 'ltEugene Gorton 175 5' 11 E 'FDick Graham 155 5' 10' G Bill Hahn 145 5' 7 OB Don Hessey 145 5' 6 G ?Bill Hradel 170 6' E Tom Kennedy 170 6' T Duane Kimball 159 5' 7 G 'kDave Korman 169 5' 9 G Tom Knoll 140 5' ll HB i?Henry Martin 144 5' 5 G Frank Miller 220 5' 10 T Dick Mitchell 180 5' 11 T Iack Phillabaum 148 5' 7 C Earl Pollock 130 5' 5 QB i'Boyd Prater 150 5' 9 E '3Tom Sarratore 160 5' 9 FB 'Flack Shrider 141 5' 9 QB ikPaul Winquist 155 6' FB itVerlin Zimmerman 164 6' l T 'li Indicates Seniors THE FOOTBALL BANOUET The 8th Annual Testimonial Banquet given by the Exchange Club to the 1945 football squad was held December 5, 1946 in the dining room of the Four Flags Hotel. We have also resumed baseball for the first time since 1923. The turn out for these sports was good, and We are confident that the 1946 season will be an excellent one for all spring sports. The lack of coaches has been the worst drawback in the Whole setup, but that will be ironed out. Also, no baseball games Will be played at Niles this year because of the lack of diamond facilities. EVER SINCE EVE This comedy of youth is the mirthful story of Susan Blake, career girl, and the troubles which beset those two loyal musketeers, lohnny Clover and Spud Erwin, Editor and Business Manager of the Preston High School Pen- guin, when Susan high-pressures herself into the position of Assistant Editor. Susan-always with the best possible intentions-almost bankrupts the Penguin, shakes the friendship of the musketeers, and gives them both the measles. When her innocent enthusiasm involves all three in an illegal pin- ball game, which almost lands them all in jail, Iohnny's mother steps in and saves the day, not only for the young people, but also for the high school principal and the pretty journalism teacher, Whose lives have been disrupted by Susan. Lucybelle Lee, the Southern Menace almost ruins Susan's love life, but in this situation also Susan proves her ability to get her man. The play was directed by Mrs. Iohn Bacon and Mrs. Charles Garns. 66 IUNIOR PLAY THE CAST Standing: Arlene Cox, Dale Hauch, Miss Pearson, Ioan Carlson, lack Bunbury, Anne Kompass, Betty McGrew, Merrilyn Havens, Iames Bennett, Charles Eden, Donald Snyder, lane McVeigh. SPRING GREEN On December l3th and l4th the funior Class presented a three act comedy, Spring Green. The play, written by Florence Ryerson and Colin Clements, was directed by Miss Mary lane Pearson with loan Carlson and Merrilyn Havens acting as prompters. The play revolves around the Cassell family, their friends, and their troubles. Early in the play, Maior Michael Todd arrives at the Cassell home with his son, Newton. Newton is shy, reserved, and lacking in confidence. His only ambition in life is the scientific breeding of earthworms. Newton does not make a very strking impression on Tony Cassell or Pinkie or Bing or Dunk or any of the boys or grls he comes in contact with, until Eula, a striking red head, comes to town. This perks up his interest, and consequently, leads him into trouble, He almost loses his earthworms along with a citation from the Government. With the help of his friends the play ends with everyone happy. 67 GYM SHOW The Zlst Annual Gym Show was splendidly presented this year by the members of the physical education department: Mr. Whitwam, Miss Sprague, Mr. Ham, and Miss Snyder. Outstanding acts were Senior Girls' Marching, the ever popular Tumbling Sixteen, Square Dance by tenth grade girls and boys, and, of course, the Competition. This year the senior team, captained by Norm Arnold, defeated the lunior team, captained by Duane Kimball, by a score of l4 to 9. However, the winner wasn't decided until the 3-point tug-of-war, since the score stood ll to 9 in favor of the Seniors, at the end of the individual combats. By winning the cowbell again this year, the Class of '46 becomes the first to win it two consecutive years since the Class of '4l. THE PAYYOFF 68 TWENTY-SECOND ANNUAL BAND BOUNCE Lou Thompson Thera Kerr lean Weist APRIL 4 AND 5, 1946 This year's Band Bounce proved to be one of the best ever presented by our Band. Great improvement could be noted in their playing ability and attitude, and the three numbers played at the District Festival were exception- ally well played. Thursday night the adult crowd heard a saxaphone quartet and a brass quartet from Elkhart High School play several selections. This year Mr. Bacon had the pleasure of presenting Thera Kerr as our l946 Melody Oueen. The court included Lou Thompson and lean Weist. This year the choir gave a musical comedy, WORDS AND MUSlC, lanuary 31 and February l. The scene is Barton College, where the annual operetta is written by the dean of dramatic art. The dean is indisposed with the measles this year, so Dean Highnote, head of the music department and dean of women and Dean Longword, head of the English department and dean of men have consented to collaborate on the production, A mutual admiration has inspired the two deans to do their best work. Dean Longword discovers that he knows nothing more modern than Shakespeare, so lohn, his secretary, offers to send his ideas to a friend in New York. Similarly, Dean I-lighnote knows nothing more modern than Bach, so her secretary, Mary, is going to have the musical score composed by a friend in New York. When the manuscripts are returned they are given to President Fussbutton before the Deans have a chance to read them. The faculty and the students meet to approve the operetta, which is jazzy and modern, to the joy of the students and the amazement of the faculty. Iohn and Mary admit they have written the operetta, and the committee agrees to let the operetta be produced, so everything ends happily. 70 WI-lO'S WI-IO IN SE NICB HIGH SCI-IDOL Most popular Best looking Best dancer Most likely to succeed Biqqest bluffer Most devoted couple Best athlete Most musical Best looking Most popular Biqqest assignment giver Iewel Crouch . . The Seventh Grade this year lost all six games. Although at times they played fair basketball, they were unlucky most of the season. The Eighth Grade fared better, and the team developed as the season advanced. They Won tour out of six games played. The Ninth Grade played outstanding ball. They lost only one game of their seven and this was to a much larger and more experienced team. Next year many of these players will be valuable for second team material. 86 BAND Fourth Row: Margaret Tournock, lune Thompson, Sue Turner, Dorothy Hoisington, Willis Meyer, Clare McKee, Eugene McClarY, loyce Walters Third Row: lol-in Zimmer, Robert Miltenberger, lack Rhodes, Gaines Pointer, Marilyn Lanson, Violet Russell, Dick Marquardt, David Martinsen Second Row: Stanley Iackson, Donald Graftord, Gordon Burnett, Mike Dreher, David Carse, Norman Mead First Row: Gloria Johnson, Pierce Williams, Martha Mead, Mr. Maikowski, Fred Cramer, Gary Wilkenson, Ross Creviston CHORUS fmt Fourth Row: Marijene Oswald, Ann Weaver, Sally Green, Richard Perry, Charles Holland, Glenn Page, Max Hickerson, Robert Heide, Ralph Bacon, Marcia Michael, lean Hart, Connie Brown Third Row: Greta Anderson, Mary Gulbranson, Irma Peterson, Lucia Riddle, Gloria Iohnson, Earlene Clark, Mary Carey Young, Louise Strasser, Ioan Renterghem, Susan Hibbard Second Row: Margaret Albright, Martha Funk, Paula Wellinqham, Ingrid Rampoldt, Marla Redding, Grace Easton, Ianice Grey, Donna Fay, Barbara Humphrey, Patricia Monahan First Row: Margaret Ossmer, Gloria Eisen, Bonnie Dickeson, Patricia Coons, Marjorie Heberle, Miss Detwiler, Alice Brevier, Patricia Stover, Patricia Carpenter, Mildred Hickerson DOUBLE SEXTET Second Row: Marla Redding, Ingrid Rampoldt, Marcia Michael, Paiiy Stover, Iean Hari, Lois Sirasser Firsi Row: Sally Green, Marqarei Osmer, Marijane Oswald, Mary Carey Young, Barbara Humphrey, Marie Seiferi Ai the keyboard: Miss Detwiler 88 Wl-IO'S WHO Picture Picture on page on page Most popular Best looking Best dancer Most likely to succeed Biggest bluffer Most devoted couple Best athlete Most musical Best looking Most popular Biggest assignment giver Dare l-lance . . . .75 loan Muller . , .76 Paula Wellingham 80 Ann Weaver . . , .82 Aleta Styers ,. 77 loan Zimmerman .77 Sue Turner . . . ,79 Barbara Welsher .77 FACULTY Miss Walbridge , .lO Miss Sprague . ..lO Miss McDonald , , . 9 lack Crouch lim Hall . . No more doubtful values! That's the Ultimatum of today's wise shoppers. Penney's endorses this movement. We put quality first because it's good common sense. Our success is built on it. And because we intend to operate for years and years to come - we've no intention now of abandoning our rigid standards. Low prices appeal to us, of course. Penney's is always searching them out and presenting them to you daily. But - ALWAYS - quality is the distinguishing factor. One hundred per cent is our ideal - and Penney's values must NEVER fail to measure up to it. I. C. PENNEY CO.. INC.
