Vikie goes everywhere, knows everybody, and can do cmy- thing. Meet him half-way, and you'll find him C1 very friendly little fellow. Foreword We, the class of 1942, present this edition of the Tattler to you, the future classes of Niles High School. lt is our aim in this edition to portray accurately the activities of each member of the high school. We sincerely hope that We achieve our aim. As We, the class of l942, enter a warring World in which our country is fighting for its very existence, We assume a serious but confident attitude. We are aware of the peril our country is in and of the great effort and many sacrifices necessary to achieve final victory. However, We are confident that final victory shall be ours. Shortly, many of the boys of the l942 Class will join some branch of the United States armed forces. They are eager to get into the fight, and it will be found that they are neither lacking in courage nor spirit. Some boys of this class have already forsaken school Work for active service in the Army, Navy, or Marine Corps. The girls of the Class of i942 also have a big task to do. They must maintain the home front. We feel that our training in Niles High School has been sufficient to allow us to enter any defense industry and learn quickly to do our job efficiently. We also feel that it has been intensive enough to enable us to maintain a solid home front and Generally to serve our country efficiently and intelligently. A graduate of Northwestern University and a member of Alpha Omicron Pi, she also had the honor of being a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She came to Niles in l939, and in these three short years has won many friends who will long remember her, In addition to teaching, she has been debate coach. She has given a helpful hand to many students. We enjoyed her speech at the Iunior-Senior banquet because of the many memories which it revived of the last three years. Miss Studenroth will not be back next year, since she will be married this summer, We Seniors Wish her much happiness for her future life, page four HDHIIHISTHHTIUH BUHHD UF EIJUUHTIUH Mr. Frank G. He was not prominent in the first part ot the season because he was ineligible. In a game he was slow to start but once he got going he couldn't be stopped. When the ball was in the opponents' possession he had the uncanny knack of getting it off the backboard and thus preventing a score. His favorite shot was a one-handed push shot with two men hanging on him. In the State Tournament he reached his peak and scored more points than any other player in the tournament. The Detroit Free Press put him on the all-state team, and he is the only class B man to receive such an honor. honorable mention by the De- state team. When he had the Going down the court he did ball and nothing could fluster to the basket his teammates good lonq shot. CECIL COLEMAN: Cecil, known to his iriends as Cece, is a deter- mined, dependable, iirst-rate ball handler. He is noted for his coolness under fire. Since he transferred from Buchanan in the fall oi l94l this was his first year with the Niles team but it was also his last year, for he is a senior. In this short time he has made numerous friends and acquired a reputation as an excellent all-round athlete. ROBERT IURGENSEN: Bob has been a real asset to the team, A rug- ged determined player, Bob never seemed to hit a peak or a low in playing, but played a good game continually, ln numerous pinches Bob has come through to pull the team out or to score a needed point. He will be missed in the l942 campaign. GEMROE FLETCHER: As a basketball player Gemroe is tops. He is bad medicine as far as the opponents are concerned. When it came to a jump, Gemroe had the upper hand. He could out-jump anyone and everyone and drive the ball into the hands of one of his team- mates. A very low but very fast dribble is a singular characteristic of Gemroe. In a drive to the basket he is noted for an uncannily accu- rate one-handed push shot. He will not be back next year as he too is a senior. IEROLD WINGEART: Although ineligible until the last of the season lerold was a very valuable addition to the squad. He played his best ball in the tournamentsfwhen such playing was necessary. His perfectly combed, wavy, bright red hair is as familiar to everyone as his excellent ball-playing. Jerold is most noted for his shovelfshot. After dribbling into range he would flip the ball under-handed into the basket. This was his last season with the Vikings. IAMES TUMA, oapper Viking coach, came from St. Clair Shores to lead a scrapping Viking team to the first state championship the school has boasted in this sport since 1923. He is well liked by stu- dents and townspeople alike, all of Whom are pulling for a repeat performance in l943. A treasured momento of his is the wrist watch presented to him by the team at the basketball banquet, Tuma coaches football and tennis and also heads the Air Raid organization for Niles and vicinity. page forty-se ren Basketball The Niles High School Basketball team has completed a very successful season due to the excellent directing of Coach Tuma, the unguestioning coopera- tion among the players, and the all-out backing of the student body. After a mid-season slump in which Niles lost three Consecutive Games. the Vikings won the remaining eight conference games but lost the con- ference title to Three Rivers by a one-game margin. Much to the chagrin of the conference champs the Niles team, which was the only team to defeat them, trounced them not once, but twice, during the season. ln the regional tournament at St. loe, Niles eliminated Buchanan first, then a tough Sturgis team, and then ended Three Rivers' hopes by defeating them a third time. Then Niles moved into Kalamazoo for the quarter-finals and there they defeated a very good Grand Rapids Christian team. ln this game, especially, the Vikings needed and got the support of a large portion of the student body. The Vikings then went on to Lansing for the semi-finals and there overwhelmed a determined Marshall team. Despite the great distance the Vikings had the support of several hundred fans in the two Lansing games. Niles had the support of not only Niles' citizens but citizens from other towns near Niles and their aid is appreciated. In the Final game Niles drew Ecorse, which is a suburb of Detroit. ln this game the Vikings were red-hot and each player hit his peak. After scoring twenty points in the second quarter while holding Ecorse scoreless, Niles romped on to a 50-30 victory, clinching the State Championship. tSee p. 52 for banquetl Pictures on pages 45, 46, 47 fexcept Coach Tumal, 48, 49, Sl, and 73 bv Morgan Studio. page forty-eight FUUTBHLL VARSITY FOOTBALL Back Row: Thurman Crouch, William Cribbs, Peter Potokar, Rolland Fritz, Archie Cribbs, Robert Vargo, Dillard Crocker, Henry Miswick, Tom Michienzi Third Row: Mgr, Richard Shipperley, Edward Klose, William Hargreaves, Gemroe Fletcher, Richard O L R'clcll M N W sos, oren 1 e, gr. orman eaver Second Row: Mr. Whitwam, Mr. Rodi, Kenneth Kocher, Ed Coquillard, Robert Zabel, Grover Smith, Everett McLaughlin. Toastmaster Stanley Stub Storms introduced the principal speaker, Mr. Charles Bachman, head football coach at Michigan State College. Mr. Bachrnan gave an impressive talk, drawing upon his experiences with the Great Lakes Naval Training Station team during the last World War for il- lustrations. Mr. Zabel, speaking for the school, paid tribute to the team and its accomplishments. Honored guest was Bill Wetmore, member of the team several years ago who was stricken with infantile paralysis soon after his graduation. He was introduced by Mr. Bradfield on whose teams he played. Coach Tuma was presented with a watch chain with a miniature foot- ball attached. Captain Bob lurgensen made the presentation on behalf of the team. The squad deeply appreciated this banquet for it demonstrated once more that the citizens of Niles are solidly united in support of its athletic teams. BaskethaH Banquet To show how Niles felt about its state championship basketball team the Chamber of Commerce sponsored a banquet with the members of the basket- ball squad as honored guests. lt was held at the Elk's Temple April l. Mr. Paul Thayer, president of the Chamber of Commerce, introduced attorney Stuart Vt7hite, who presided as tcastmaster. Mr. White introduced Coach Tuma, who presented members of the team. Several team members gave short talks. Cemroe Fletcher, the last member to speak, presented a watch to Coach Tuma on behalf of the team, and medals to manager Paul Potokar and assistant coach Gene Rodi. The audience gave a round of applause to Mr. Leland Walker, who coached the 1923 state championship basketball team. The main speaker was Bennie Oosterbaan, head basketbball coach at the University of Michigan who recalled high-lights of his athletic career in high school and college. page fifty-two SECOND TEAM SECOND TEAM FOOTBALL Back Row: Leroy Fowler, Wesley Kloko, Theron Hessey, Laverne Blank, Kermit Adams, john Gillette, john Laberteaux, Louis Drolet, Richard Smith Second Row: Mgr. The squad won four of its five games. lt, like the Varsity, shut out its opponents in all of its victories. The two teams together were scored upon in only three games and these three games they lost. There appears to be a considerable amount of likely material for next year's Varsity in this squad. Halfback Bob Cutler showed promise as a left-handed passer. Red Adams is a good running back. Fullback Laverne Blank gained the most yardage for the team. As a guard, lohn Riddle shows much ability. Much of the success of the team and the individual development of the play- ers is due to the able coaching of Mr. Smith. The primary object of a second team is to develop material for the first team. Next year's Conference schedule is the real test of this year's reserves and we have no fear of its outcome. This squad has also been valuable in providing stiff opposition in scrimmage. The Niles High School Band, directed by Mr. Roth, is one of the finest high school bands in this region. One of the reasons for its present prominence is the method employed by Mr. Roth in organizing the band. Each year a grade band is formed from capable musicians in the grades. As these players enter Iunior High School the better ones are placed in the Iunior High Band. Finally, upon entering Senior High the best players are given the honor of being a member of the Senior High Band. By this time each musician has had years of experience and is very capable. During football season, practice during the regular hours is not enough. Each noon the band members rush down to Plym Park, eat a hurried lunch which they have brought with them, and spend the rest of the noon hour practicing marching and playing. Thus is is no Wonder that the band con- tinually puts on a superb exibition at each game. Practice and more practice is the reason. fThe band plays not only for the numerous occasions in school but for almost any occasion of a city-wide nature that needs entertainmentl Our auditorium programs are pepped up when the band performs. The band spon- sors the band bounce tsee p. 729, plays at each home football game, and takes part in the variety show. One wonders how they find time to do all these things, but they accomplish them somehow, and We feel that they cannot receive too much credit. pa ge sixty CHOIR Back Row: Roy Frucci, Bill Kessler, Bill Gregor, Kenneth Cogswell, Bob Bohner, Paul Taggett, Bob Vargo, Dave Merrell, Henry Miswick, George Hoffman, Bill Steiner. Combining the best talent of the two glee clubs, Mr. Frigaard has moulded a group which is the pride of our school and the envy of others. A versatile group, it switches with ease from sacred numbers to light opera, from popular selections to spirituals, and sings them all well. Special groups within the choir are the Boys' Octet and the Girls' Sextet which are pictured on the following page. Besides singing for several of our assemblies this year the choir has also presented programs before the luncheon clubs, before several ladies' clubs, Hanclel's Christmas oratorio, The Messiah, and exchange programs with two other high schools and will climax its year with the annual Variety Show on May Zl and 22. CSee page 74l. Since losing the advisory period practice time when our clocks were set ahead and our schedule changed, Mr. Frigaard and the choir have come an hour early each morning to rehearse. Such loyalty is most commendable and is a fine tribute to Mr. Frigaard's leadership. Soloists with the choir this year have been Marjorie l-lossfeld, Dorothy Becker, PGQQY Downey, Vernon Witham. Doris Harrington's splendid accornpaniments have contributed much to the excellence of the Choirs work. Doris will be back next year. Thirty of the vocalists pictured above will graduate this june. A vocal director, like an athletic coach rnust build anew each year after graduation robs him of his stars. page sixty-one SENIOR HIGH ORCHESTRA Back Row: Leon Smith, Beatrice Singer, Mr. Roth, Lucille Rogers, Lois Cool, Bill Blackmun. Nancy Mid- dleton, Helen Dick, Margaret Bates The 1942 Studen' Council has been active in many different phases of school life. It has promoted school dances, and with the proceeds has made gifts to the music department and to the Red Cross. Student study halls have again been successfully conducted. A delegate was sent to Lew Wallace High School in Gary, an exchange program with Dowagiac was sponsored, and the council set up the means by which four more cheerleaders were elected. Miscellaneous details, such as confusion in the cafeteria line have been straightened out. Tattler sales have also been increased by the direct methods used by Council members in getting subscriptions. Perhaps the first big function of the Council was to set up a campaign for a safer and saner Halloween. Effort was put forth by every member to impress upon his advisory just what the Council is trying to do. This success- ful campaign brought forth many thanks from the people of Niles. During the week of February 2-6, a scrap iron and wastepaper drive was sponsored. With the money obtained from The Scrap for Yankee Scrappersf' the Student Council bought a defense bond. This was the first function of the Council to help in the Defense program. A Defense Council, composed of members of the Student Council has been established. lt has taken the responsibility of selling Defense Stamps in the halls, and it has also sponsored another wastepaper drive. Other ideas to help our nation in the best way we can are also being put into action. A lunior Red Cross has also been established by the Student Council. Every member cf the high school is a member of the lunior Red Cross. The Iunior Red Cross Council is organized with members from the Student Council, who have started valuable work in the aid of the sick. lt is the sincere hope of the i942 Student Council that the Council next year will not only keep on with the present activities, but will also improve and expand them. -by Nancy Middleton page sixty-four STUDENT COUNCIL n GJLA. Mr. William D. Revelli, conductor, has been director of the University of Michigan band for several years. Mr. Revelli, who was director at Hobart, Indiana, for ten years, had the first place band in national contests for the last seven years of his stay there. I The clinic was composed of the best players from bands at Battle Creek, Benton Harbor, Berrien Springs, Cassopolis, Coldwater, Dowagiac, Elkhart, Hastings, Niles, Paw Paw, St. Ioseph, Sturgis, Three Rivers, Lawton, Decatur, East Grand Rapids, Ottawa Hills, Grand Rapids and White Pigeon. This year the clinic was held over the week end of March seventh and eighth. Practice was held all day Saturday and Sunday morning, with the concert on Sunday afternoon. After rehearsal on Saturday the Niles High School Band sponsored a dance for the members of the Clinic Band. The arrangements for the dance were in charge of Imogene Travick. Featured in the floor show were Ioy and lean Peters. People from out of town who stayed over Saturday night were entertained in the homes of Niles people. The Instrumental Music League was in charge of placing the guests in the homes. People from Niles who participated in the Clinic Band were: Vernon Witham Dave Merrill Ross Graham Bob Ristau Fred Hensler Leon Smith Gordon Jackson Robert Vernon Bill Kessler Ed Powell Imogene Travick Paul Taggett Dean Gano Written by Imogene Travik Urchestra Festival The annual Berrien-Cass country orchestra festival was held in Niles on April l5, l942 in the high school gym. Mr. Clarence Roth, instructor of instrumental music in Niles, introduced the guest conductor, Mr. David Hughes, instructor of instrumental music in Elkhart, Indiana. The guest soloist was Miss Audra Brown, first chair cellist in the Elkhart high school orchestra. Miss Brown has won first division in national contests for three consecutive years. The orchestra festival was a great success and I think all students who were in it learned something from Mr. Hughes. Written by Marguerite Shepard puffs' sr'z'm1fy-seren Vocal festival Forty-five members of the Senior High Choir traveled to Saint loseph March ll for the Annual Voice Festival. Noble Cain, famous composer, was guest director. At 10:00 o'clock rehearsal started and continued until noon. After dinner, rehearsal was resumed until 4:30. At 5:00 a dance was held in the small qyrn for all the festival guests. Here dancing continued for two hours. At 8:00 o'clock the concert opened with the choir and audience singing the Star Spangled Bcmner. The songs were divided into three groups: those sung by the girls, those sung by the boys and the selection rendered by the combined groups. Several of Mr. Cain's own compositions were sung. Ode to the Homeland was included in this group. Mr. Cain spoke for a few minutes upon the merits of these annual festivals and music in the schools. The groups were rewarded with praise from their attentive audience. Mr. Cain also commended the group by showing his very famous red suspenders when the selection was Well rendered. ' The concert ended with everyone singing O God. The first debating for the sophomores came on November first when we traveled to St. Ioseph to a debate clinic. We lost one debate to Comstock and won over Plainfield. Kathleen Boonstra and Bob Warburton represented Niles in a debate before the South Bend Central High School students on December tenth and Won the decision over their opponents. The debates in the Western Michigan Debate League contest held on November 15th and December 5th at Walwood Union Building at Kalamazoo were the most exciting of the year. Niles ended in a tie with Otsego for third place. The Debate Team was host to Benton Harbor on December second for four non-decision debates. Again in lanuary the Niles debaters had practice non-decision debates with South Bend as their guests. A very enjoyable evening was offered six debaters with whom they debated before members of the Bendeofethe River Grange on December ninth. Much credit and honor is due the six sophomore debaters who won in their first year on the squad their Michigan Forensic Debate keys. Those people are Bill Rcssow, Clayton Burlingham, Bob Steinbauer, Bob Gish, Norma lean Eberhard, and Ioy Peters. Especial congratulations go to Kathleen Boonstra, Dave Flotow and Robert Warburton for four years of participation which merits them a Debate Key set with a blue sapphire. page serenly-fn in? ,gc M' 21 13. iii XA.. When he finished the last number on the program, Ger- shwin's Rhapsody in Blue, the applause was terrific and he was called back again and again. Mr. Levant had only a half-hour in which to catch the train to Pittsburgh for another concert next day, so he tried to beg off giving an encore by announcing to the audience: I have to catch a train. However, he finally broke down and played a brief Gershwin prelude. Next day one of the St. Louis music critics closed his enthusiastic review ot the concert in these words: For an encore Mr. Levant played one of those nostalgic melodies of Gershwin, l Have to Catch a Train. page one hundred eleven QIIIIIIIIIllIIllIllIIIIIIIIll!IIIIIIIIIlllllIIIIIIIIIIIIHIIIIIIIIIIIIDIIIIIlllllllllIIIIIIIIIIIIllIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIllIIIIIIIIIIIIllllIIIIIIIIIlllllIlIIIIllIlllllllllIIIIIIllllllllIIIIIIIIIlIIIIIIlllllIKIIIIIIIIIIIIIKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII E l E W ILLIAMS BROS.
