Her primary mission is Anti-Submarine Warfare, a task for which she is particularly well suited. The NASTY NICK as her crew calls her is equipped with 4 marinized versions of the same engines used in the DC-10 and CSA aircraft and is capable of speeds in excess of 30 knots, with twin controllable, reversible pitch propellors. For Anti-Submarine Warfare, NICHOLSON is equipped with the sophisticated SQS-S3 long range sonar. This submarine detection system is integrated with a digital computer complex called Navy Tactical Data System . This system generates firing solutions for the ship's anti-submarine rockets ASROC and her 2 triple barrelled MK 32 torpedo tubes. She is also fitted with the landing platform and hanger facilities to support the light airborne multi-purpose system helicopter KLAMPSJ. The NICHOLSON also carries 2 MK 45 light weight S guns which are also integrated into the NTDS. Aided by the MK 86 Digital Fire Control System, she is prepared for assignments in her secondary mission area of shore bombardment, surface warfare action and anti-aircraft warfare. The NICHOLSON is also fitted with the Harpoon Anti-Ship Cruise Missile System and the Nato Sea Sparrow Anti-Air Missile System. NICHOLSON is homeported in Charleston, South Carolina and assigned to Destroyer Squadron Six in Cruiser Destroyer Group Two. Family NICHOLSON is the 4th Navy ship to be named for the five members of the Nicholson family renowned in American naval history. Captain james Nicholson C1737-18047 was the senior Continental Navy Captain in the Revolutionary War. During the war he commanded 3 ships of the line: Defense, Turnbull and Virginia. Most notably, when his ship was blockaded at Baltimore, Captain Nicholson took his men to join Washington at Trenton. Captain Samuel Nicholson C1743-18111 first served under john Paul jones in the Bon Homme Richard. Later, while in command of Dean, he captured 3 British sloops-of-war. He assumed duties as Superintendent of the constniction of the CONSTITUTION I OLD IRONSIDESU and served on board as her first Commanding Officer. Captain John Nicholson 41756-18447 was commissioned a Lieutenant in the Continential Navy in October 1776 and the next month was promoted to Captain to command the sloop Hornet. Captain William C. Nicholson 11800-18721, entered the Navy as a Midshipman in 1812. He served under Stephen Decatur during the War of 1812 and later commanded the steam frigate Roanoke, during the Civil War. Admiral james W.C. Nicholson 0821-18871 participated in Commodore Mathew G. Perry's japanese Expedition of 1853. During the Civil War he commanded the ISAAC SAHTH SI-IAMROCK, LIANI-1ATTANand MOHONGO. As an Admiral he commanded a European Station from 1881-1883. During the British Bomabardment of Alexandria, Egypt, 1882, he rescued the records of the American Consulate and evacuated many Americans and European Officials.
