l954 SENIOR CLASS 1954 Thus class goes down ID Nrchols hrstory as the one that has brought more changes than any other Under the leadershrp of Council Presl dent Dave Wood and Class Presrdent Jam Halpern the Class of 54 inaugurated sensor proctorrng of study halls a drffrcult assrgnm nt most successfully fulfilled lnvulnerable to demerrts the class accepted the challenge of selfdtsclpllne and lustrfled our forth rn them The establrshment of the Athletrc Councrl helped make the awardrng of letters more meaningful whrle the creatron of the Freshman Orrentatron Committee aided rncomrng students In their adlustment to Nichols lrfe Not conflnrng their contrlbutrons to the school the class lent therr hands and backs In work protects for Red Feather Agencres Above all the semors have been a thrnkrng actrve and artrculate force for good rn therr days at Nrchols They have establrshed codes of conduct and cooperation whuch have moved the school a grant strrde ahead By demandrng to know the reasons for the events rn our hrstory by drsplayrng a wrllrngness to change oprnrons after conslderatton of the problems by seeklng to understand the motrves of our public Ggures the class rs begrnnrng to appreciate the Jeffersonran Idea The drfference between the Class of T954 and Its predecessors at Nrchols rs one of degree not of kind Most senror classes are mature for therr years cooperatrve rn all aspects of school lrfe and anxrous to succeed rn therr responsrbrlrtres Thus class however possesses these qualrtres to a hugh degree Many of rts members have actrvely sought the general good rather than lndrvrdual glorr flcatron therr cooperation has been cheerfully grven and less taunted wrth personal frrctrons they have demanded new responsr brlrtres rather than merely fulflllmg those automatically devolvrng upon them They wrll be remembered wrth respect and alfectron MR SUTTER MR BOOCOCK When the members of the Class of 54 came to Nichols they showed great rntellectual promise Durrng therr years here we have seen this promise materialize as they grew In mental stature and set a scholastrc record whrch wrll challenge generattons yet unborn We look forward confidently to therr future trrumphs MR ANDERSON The Class of l954 has mamtalned the Nrchols tradrtron of havmg teams whrch work hard and fight h rd Twenty two semors recerved varsrty letters rn football and soccer alone a mayor contrrbutron to Nrchols athletic lrfe Terry Carney one of Nrchols alltrme greats John McLean natronally ranked tenms player Ron Schmitt basketball and baseball star Bull McKeon winner of the Jack James Football Trophy Dems Doyle center goalre and ambassador at large all have brought glory to Nrchols Also outstandmg are Ward Wettlaufer one of our crtys outstandrng golfers and Aaron Ament the father of fencrng at Nichols MR WATERMAN . , . . . . - . . . 9 , . , ' - , - , I I I U I ' I D of free minds in a free society.-MR. K-f' AARON AMENT Born Feb uary 77 7937 Entered September 7950 En gardel Parry six' Parry four' Extend lunge' Bill you can get down farther than that Lockle stretch those muscles' Campbell shut up With satomc sadism the tyrant of the tencers hurls Forth his commands Captain coach and manager of the fencing team Aaron was awarded a special letter at the close ot the 7953 season tor his outstanding achievement and leadership In organ lzmg the sport at Nichols Under his colorful guidance the team has cut and parrred Its way to an enviable record In local competition Other achievements seem dwartted beside this Aarons greatest contribution to Nichols but we should also mentron his exceptionally competent 'ob as football manager Aaron will study pre med at the University 0' Buffalo next year Football Manager 53 Founder Captain and Manager of Fencing 53 54 Charities Committee 54 Dramatrcx Club 57 52 JOHN CECIL BATES JR Born May 27 7936 Entered September 7952 Two years ago an intellectually starved adventurer first tasted the rlpe fruit of a Nichols education On his arrival he took one quick look around the campus and then went out for the News This forthright opportumsm plus perse verance and writing ability lwitness a year on the Gleaner boardl catapulted Jack into the Co editorshup after only one year at Nichols The innumerable duties that beset the lite of an editor do not seem to hamper Jacks academic endeavors however he ns irksomely infallible at winning Honors Showing a preference tor the racket sports Jack is a member of the squash team an managed the tennis team this spring, It he can get enough charcoal gray suits Jack will go to Princeton with everyone else next year.
