IN APPRECIATION lt is regrettable that space allows only a page in a book. and human facility allows only words, for such space and mere words can never fully express what hundreds of his boys feel in their hea1'ts for Mr. J. H. Landrum. To say, Thank you, or that we 'tappreciaten what he has done. would bel gi oss understatements. Of course, one could enumerate any number of exter- nals. One ccuiu say that Mr. Landrum gave a boy a new lease cn life by giving him the prir.-ting trade. a way to make his iiving in the world. Or, one could say that Mr. Landrum taught more English than could ever be learned in any number of text-books. One could remember his friendly smile, his wholesome humor, or the reserved dig- nity which labeled him a tru: Southe1n gentleman from Georgia. Indeed, one could talk on these things for hours. But I think the thing which made us love him most was his genuine friendship, his sincere love freely given to every boy who ever worked in the printin-g department. The very fact that he still refers to us as his boys serves to illustrate what I mean. When I first went to work in the printing plant in 1947, Mr. Landrum was already a real part of the tradition of Oxford Orphanage. I can remember a group of us sitting around his desk, listening to him tell stories of how his boys won impossible football games, or he would remember some funny story of what had hap- pened to another while working in the shop, and then he would say with a deep sense of pride how this particular fellow, or that one had gone on to do successful things in the world. And to those of us who sat with glistening eyes, listening to him talk, there came a profound awareness of being important, for we were sure that this man. if there were no others, really cared for us. When our spirits were down, he raised us up: when we were in trouble, he stuck by us. He was our friend. How, then, shall we merely say, Thank you to him 'Z His life has been, and continues to be a real inspiration for us. To him we owe a lasting debt of gratitude that can never be fully repaid. One of his boys, Bob Garner Page Nine

IN APPRECIATION For seven years Miss Mary Harris gave of her best as counselor in our dining halls. We deeply appreciate every word of encouragement, every inspiration, and every deed of kindness in our behalf. We think of her as a sincere friend and one who was always willing to direct us in the right Way. We are confi- dent that life has been made richer and fuller by her pres- ence with us. In her retirement, we extend to her our many thanks and include with them our every good Wish for years of happiness and the best of health. Page Eleven
