7 As in the Middle Ages the coat of arms, with its heraldic devices, represented the highest possible standards of the age of chivalry, so today in our 1948 COMET, the Nichols coat of arms, a design which is to appear on our school rings, symbo- lizes for us the years we have spent in Nichols High School. Each of the many dif- ferent markings on the medieval knight's armor held a special significance, and we may likewise imagine that the various phases of our school life are represented by the insignia upon this shield. The base for the coat of arms, the shield upon which it was engraved, was the main source of protection for its wearer, helping to bring him through many keen encounters, and also forming a background for the iden- tifying devices of each individual coat of arms. This - the 'escutcheon' as it is called - is comparable to the administrative department of the school,s group which not only serve the student body as benevolent guides but also provide a semi-permanent base upon which all of our school life rests. Across the middle of the escutcheon runs the 'fesse' - a wide metal band, superimposed upon the shield for added strength. Through the extra- curricular activities in which we participate, the friendships we make in - high school become stronger, and our school days become more meaningful. Thus, the fesse upon the Nichols coat of arms may be considered a symbol of the Nichols High School program of activities. The 'charges' make up a third, and most essential part of the coat of arms: without them, the design would be meaningless. Just eo, there could be no school without students, and so we think of the students,grouped in their respective classes, as the charges of our Nichols High School coat of arms. As the charge, the head of a lion - always the figure of cour- age and nobility -appears three times, indicating a high degree of excel- lence, similar to that for which students of Nichols have always striven. I Finally, seated regslly above the shield, the majestic lion, the crest' of the Nichols coat of arms, is again engraved. The crest was the final touch upon the medieval coat of arms, adding a further stamp of ln- dividuality, the culmination of the design. We, the class of 1948, owe much to the support of our administration - symbolized by the escutcheong we have benefited from the activities we engaged in - for which the sym- bol is the fesse, and, having passed through twelve years in Nichols High School, - represented by the charges - we may logically claim the posi- tion comparable to the crest over the coat of arms. As seniors, we in large measure what our school, in all its aspects, has made usg we all hope ever to be worthy to be thought of as a crest - the culmination of the Nichols High School educational coat of arms.

47714 LEON TYRELL The name Leon Tyrrell will always be held in affectionate esteem by the class of 1948. An important figure in our community, Mr. Tyrrell was always willing to serve upon the school board, and did so for many years. Until his death on Octo- ber 18, 1948, he rendered time and service to the ends which he believed to be for the best interests of the students. As a class we had many contacts with Mr. Tyrrell, in which his cooperation, kindness, and generosity augmented our success and happiness. The feeling which we held for Mr. Tyrrell and know he held for ue is our tribute to him: he was our friend. 2
