Those who were still awake heard one of the three national networks declare Democrat jimmy Carter the winner in a close presi- dential race. Carter. a peanut farmer and former Georgia governor, was almost unknown when he began his campaign two years before the election. A toothy smile, per- sonable family, and promises of a new hope for America brought Carter national attention, victory in 20 of 29 primaries and his party's nomination. Campaigning at Nicholls began late in the fall semester. Buttons and bumper stickers showing support for either of the maior candidates could be found around campus. and a mock election showed stu- dents to be in favor of Ford.
