I ,asm Me., .- W fy-. , M CRUISE HISTORY USS NICHOLAS left Pearl Harbor for her WESTPAC cruise 13 September 1965, as a member of Anti-Submarinef'l'Warfare'fGroup ONE. On 25 September 19659shertlylafter,ar,r'iv,ing in Yokosuka, Japan, theslxfirstf port of' calfg, CDR W. B. HOOFFSTEQFTER relieved CDR NEWCOMB as Commalriding Officer. Q Afterigoing through ,a week of upkeep NIC HOLAS left Yokosuka on A14 'Oc't,ober?for' operations off the coast of Niietnam. NICHOLAS was assigned various duties, su?-:h as acting as plane gilafd destroyer for the USS HORNET and participatgiig in search and rescue Qperations. After an extensive period of 35 days atisea, NICHOLAS completed her op- erations and proceeded to Subic Bay, Philippines for a week of upkeep. I NICHOLAS left Subic Bay for more operations off the coast of Vietnam. Her duties completed, NICHOLAS arrived in the port of Hong Kong on 26 November for a week of rest and recreation. On 3 December NICHOLAS departed Hong Kong enroute to Kaohsiung, Taiwan from which she operated while part of the Taiwan Straits Patrol Group. While on the Taiwan Patrol, NICHOLAS was assigned two search and rescue missions, one for a downed Chinese aircraft. In January NICHOLAS left Kaohsiung for operations off the coast of Vietnam. During the early morning of 17 January while on plane guard duty astern the USS HORNET, NICHOLAS rescued a man who fell overboard. To keep up the pace NICHOLAS left plane guard duty and closed the coast of South Vietnamf or a shore bombardment mission. Commander U, S, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam made the following press release: USS NICHOLAS, the oldest Navy destroyer in commission 123 1X2 years oldj, fired 94 rounds of 5 inch ammunition at VC troop concentrations and structures in Quang Ngai Northeast of Saigon. Air spotters for the mission reported excellent coverage of the target with seven structures destroyed, eight damaged and two left burning. The morning following the shore bombard- ment mission NICHOLAS received an SOS fI'01Y1 3 coastal freighter, ss BRIGHT STAR, which had gone aground on a reef 30 miles from NICHOLAS'S position. When NICHOLAS arrived at the scene, the wind and sea conditions precluded rescue by boat. Marine helicopters from Chu Lai were called upon to transfer the 28 people on BRIGHT STAR to NICHOLAS. For her operations off the coast of Vietnam, NICHOLAS was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal- Upon completion of her tour in the South Chma Sea NICHOLAS proceeded to Yokosuka forielght days of upkeep. On 17 February NICHOLAS de' parted with USS HORNET and Destroyer Division 251 for Sydney, Australia. Enroute to Sydney, NICHOLAS passed by the WW II battle areas of Vella Lavella, Savo Island, Kula Gulf, Guadacanal, Cape Esperance, and II'OI1 Bottom Bay, all in which the NICHOLAS had foughf- NICHOLAS arrived in Sydney on 1 March for SIX days of rest and recreation.
