We know and appreciate deeply the sacrifices and self-denial you have experienced in our behalf without thought of yourself. Your untiring efforts above and beyond the call of duty have been an inspiration to us which we shall never forget. fn D . If , A ...l You Worked many long hours helping us prepare for the prom, in the publication of our year book, and in guiding and directing our footsteps toward higher goals which we would not have attained without your advice and help. It is for this and much more that to you, Mrs. Halstead, we respectfully and lovingly dedicate this book. . ll 4 Table of Contents BOARD OF CONTROL 1000 WATTS 4 Page 9 Page Pac'-'llV T Classes Personnel A - 1 S A ENERGETIC BEAMS Page -47 Organizations Plays Department of Beauty Department of Popularity SUPPORTING RAYS Page T03 3 DEPT. Memorable not only because we now had protection against polio but also because Cas some students so aptly put ith that hurt! Here a long line of students wait at the Summersville Grade School for their first shot. Serving approximately 800 Nicholas-' County High School students are l6 buses. Many of the students ride long dis- tances, some of the longer include: Mt. Lookout which is a distance of 16 miles, Dille, a distance of 28 miles, and Dixie and Vaughan, 32 miles away. They are manned by courteous, competent drivers whose business is to get students to school safely and on time. Here the buses are ready to go and wait for the final afternoon bell. Class tournament days are happy days. Last year it was a happy class of Juniors that cheered their teams to a sweep of the tournament. In the picture to the left Ronald Sweeney, left, and Tom Dotson beat out a rhythm on the drums as Nora Foster fbeside Ronaldl displays her usual amount of enthusiasm. The Homecoming during the past year was the most important of our high school career because the queen was our class 'member for the first time. Many hours of work went into the building and decoration of the float. Patty Waggoner, inside and on top the cab of the truck pulls napkins through the wire as Nina Lilly and Howard Keenan hand them to her. Um School Year During the World Series last fall many ears were glued to the inter-com at noon. To the left is a typical scene. Roger Hanna, David McCue, Edward Grose, Joe Summers, and Mike Bays give them their utmost attention to every word. Who will it be, boys - Yanks or Dodgers? Classes change and the boys begin the climb up the hill while Coach Gladwell heads for the gate to have that between class cigarette. While Greta McClung, right, sits in class, Wanda and Violet Martin invade the Home Ec. department to make preparations for a party. ln The Spotlight King Herod, portrayed by Roscoe Dillon commands the Wise Men, Carlos Rapp and Harold Thompson, to arise and hunt for the baby Jesus. His wife, Janet Champe, sits behind him in one of the scenes from The Christmas Story, presented by the Band, F. T. A., and Thespians. Coach Burruss takes time out from his duties at the gym to serve on lunch hall duty and catch up on the latest news. Or maybe he's iust hiding behind the magazine. We all know that our school is crowded but we didn't know it was so crowded that any student would have to use the basement floor for a desk. Obviously we were wrong, as proved by Gary Stout. 5 Here in The midsT of microscopes, TesT Tubes, sToves, sewing machines, and elecTric saws we learned Trades and pracTices we will use The resT of our lives. Man I Buildings Brighten The Campus This mighty -structure could change moods so quickly. Empty it was a silent unfriendly piece of equipment but how it came to life, exciting and vibrant at games and pep meetings to provide us with our necessary exercise and excitement so typical of our high school days. So modest looking from without one only needed to get within nose-range to smell the wonderful food prepared by our won- . derful cooks. It was a long climb from the red- brick dovvniunder to the top of the hill to the three buildings there, with only an occasional step at the band room or gym - but We did it cheerfully between classes come snow, rain or shine. ......... .. wm1....-mum we - . fm' V 7777777 YWZW umSQ1MNshcNsNK , wm N NN ' 2 -3- Z, I lf ' f w l A driver educaTion car was only one of The pieces of equipmenT ufilized by The faculTy in Teaching us Those Things noT 'found in Texfbooks. MRS. BARBARA STRICKLAND As secretary of her alma mater Mrs. Strickland is always efficient and courteous, and fills an important part of the administration. Some of her duties include making deposits, writing checks, taking care of the bookstore, carrying out school correspondence, and keeping Mr. Wells' work in order. The time is 11:45. The bell rings. Out of every door students scramble to be first in line. The fragrant odor of delicious food greets them as they line up in front of the cafeteria. Inside, the cooks lwith the help of a few studentsl have been busy all morning preparing lunch for hungry students. All who ate here were sure they had gotten the proper amount of vitamins. Mrs. Pat Backus, left, and Mrs. Portorhee White, right, are aided by Jennings Shaver and Dolly Tinnell during the 10:45 period. To Staff Ticholas Count High 7 Kyle FNeil French Fitzwater Keeping our buildings and campus in tip-top condition is the duty of our Three ianitors, who are always on the job, whether it be sweeping and picking up paper, fixing anything broken, or lust as an all-around helper to the faculty and students. Kyle Neil, left, is busily engrossed in sweeping the lower hall room, while French Fitzwater, center, takes time out from his duties at the Junior High building to watch students through the win- dow and Clarence McClung, right, fires-up the furnace in the main building. One group of students spent their noon hours planning decorations, refreshments, and games. When their work was completed another group took over. Approximately 40 students spent two days decorating. Card tables, cards, and various other games had to be obtained. After all the hurry and scurry the big moment finally arrived. The party was on and everyone had a wonderful time. Then back to work they went, tearing decorations down they had spent so much time on. And they loved every minute of it. Right: Nina Lilly places an ornament on the tree and Helen Lykins stops pushing the broom momentarily for a little chat. and Junior High Buildings. In this annual we have recorded our lives at Nicholas County High School, our ioys and sorrows, victories and defeats, our hopes, our aspirations, our dreams and awakenings. We hope that it will keep alive memories of high school days when the spotlight shines on another chapter of our lives - the future. The goal of the staff was an annual that everyone would treasure and one that would win first honors in national competition. If these goals are attained it will recompense our effort. Using their salesmanship here are Paul Huffman, Eddie McMillion and Susan Hall. Journalists Work to Make The Paper a Success Hardworking journalists joined in the mad scramble to gather information, write stories, sell ads, and prepare the final layout for each issue of the Gold and Blue Record. The hustle and bustle around Room 3 was led by eight Journalism II students and Mrs. Kathryn Drennen, faculty advisor, as first year reporters enthusiastically gathered 'material and wrote articles, sold candy to finance the paper, and sold ads. The editorial staff edited columns and prepared layouts in carrying out their goals: to keep the student body well informed, and to try to win first honors in state and national competi- tion. ln spite of all the work on the Gold and Blue Record the Journalism ll students found time to work on Nichlosean layouts and pictures and begin work on next year's annual. Because of Mrs. Drennen's abilities in teaching journalism the Gold and Blue Record has won first honors in the state for several years. Layouts are always a trying experience for Journalism ll as the big wheels of the staff get some new advice from Nancy McDowell. Front row, l. to r: Janet Westfall, Alice Morriston, Penny Nichols. With this slogan in mind 71 farm boys have completed another year of Vocational Agri- culture under the guidance of their instructor, Carl Cook. Aside from the supervised farm training program the F. F. A. has completed numerous proiects during the year. ' One of the most important of these was the annual Safety Campaign held between January l to April l. New signs on the campus and the Welcome Signs at all the town entrances were painted and put up by the F. F. A. V They built the scorer's table at the gym, built two picnic tables which were donated to the new F. F. A. A. was represented last year at the State Convention at Jackson's Mill by Carlos Rapp and Clarence Johnson. Attending camp at Ripley were Dale Dodrill, Sherman Dodrill, '56, Carlos Rapp, Clarence Johnson, Shirley O'Dell, '56, and Bob Bell. The Conservation' Camp representative was Carlos Rapp. Proof that the F. F. A. is growing is presented by the fact that a record number of 42 freshmen enrolled last year in the farm training program for the purpose of LEARNING TO DO DOING TO LEARN EARNING TO LIVE LlVING TO SERVE 65 Learning to make Home Sweet Home a pleasant place for the future lucky man is the goal of these Future Homemakers. First and second grade children are invited to a party each year sponsored by the F. H. A. for the needy. Children are being greeted this year by Louise Painter, Darla Dooley, Nancy McDowell, and Miss Hazel Dorsey, sponsor. The party is over, everyone had a wonderful time and Jean Ann Morris and Ardith Santa Claus McClung bid the kids farewell. 66 Learning to live better today so that the lives of the student and her family may be enriched is the chief aim of the Future Homemakers of America. The purpose of the Future Homemakers is To promote a growing appreciation of the joys and satisfactions of homemaking. Red and white are the colors of this organization which is sponsored by Miss Hazel Dorsey and Mrs. Virginia Simms of the home economics department. Each year this active group has a series of parties and roasts that prove to be a lot of fun. Besides attending the regional F. H. A. meeting at Athens, the group sends two representatives to the F. H. A. Camp at Jackson's Mill each year. Busy at one of their various tasks oflchecking and filing tests are seated l. to r: Millie Grogg, Darla Dooley, Joel Lee Groves Raymond Wotring, Janet Westfall and Barbara Whitman. Standing are Sam Strickland and Tom Mearns. Helping Others is Their Motto The Student Guidance Council is composed of eight members. In May of each year the council elects two boys and two girls from the sophomore class to replace the graduating seniors. They serve for a period of two years. Members chosen by the council must be approved by the faculty. Such personality and character traits as scholar- ship, character, leadership, co-operation and de- pendability are considered in selecting new mem- bers. This is an active group of students who perform a valuable service for their school. Each member is scheduled for one period each olay to work with the counselor. Their work consists of scor- ing tests, making profile sheets, filing vocational materials, checking out and checking in career material, recording data on the individual guid- ances folders, filing requests for admits, calling students for interviews, and doing many routine iobs which make it possible for the counselor to devote more of her time to testing and interview- ing students. - The council with the help of the sponsor pub- lishes a handbook for the use of new students. This proiect entails a considerable amount of time, effort, and expense. The money that is made on the lunch hour movies helps to finance the publishing of the handbook. ln April each year the council elects from the freshman class a boy and girl to serve on the Assembly Committee and also a boy and girl for the Social Committee. They assist with Eighth Grade Visiting Day, Career Day, and College Day. The Guidance Council sponsors two Citizenship awards to be given to the senior boy and girl each year, who are selected by the council and faculty as being most worthy of it. Discussing the events for the activity calendar are standing l. to r: Sam Strickland, Pauline Donohue, Raymond Wotring, Nancy McDowell, Van Summers and Sue Mason. Seated are Mrs. Esther Golden and Mrs. Mariorie Lay, sponsors. heir Work Was Uur Pleasure Make-up is messy, but a 'must' and these students seem to enioy getting ready for this social activity. A perpetual source of the most noble and useful entertainment, is a quotation which vvell describes the assembly committee. This Worthwhile group, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Esther Golden and Mrs. Mar- iorie Lay, searches diligently for outstanding assembly programs in the fields of entertainment and instruction. Six students constitute the Assembly Committee, tvvo seniors, two iuniors, and tvvo sophomores. In May of each year two students from the freshman class are elected for a period of three years. Students are selected on a basis of leadership, per- sonality, character, and scholastic achievement. Among the programs sponsored by the Assembly Committee during the past year were William S. Willet's Bazaar In India , the O'Days, professional magicians, and Russ Burgess, with a group of African Love Birds trained to raise flags, ride ferris wheels, and ride a train through a blanket of fire. Tiny Wendell Dodrill is practicing a popular form of recreation, not often approved. L. to r: Eddie McMillion, Mrs. Fae Groves, sponsor, Carol Keenan, Wendell, Barbara Amick, Howard Keenan. Seated: Eleanor Morton. Fun is Their Business Did you get the social activity blank 'filled out? Good, now all we have to do is find the social committee members and have them sign it. This is a statement heard quite often around school. It is this committee that decides whether we should have a party, dance, or picnic, or whether we should not. Composed of two members from each of the three upper classes, it is headed by Mrs. Fae Groves. Its members are chosen at the end of their freshman year by the Guidance Council. Their iob is to see that each social activity is properly chaperoned and a responsible clean-up committee is on hand after it is over. Each member must have his name on the ac- tivity sheet and the sheet must be in the office two days prior to the social affair. To become a member, a student is given a teaching aptitude test which determines his ability in the field of instruction. A student making 95? or above on the test, having a C plus average and approved by the faculty will be admitted to the club. A senior and iunior member were chosen to repre- sent the club at the annual Future Teachers conference held at Jackson's Mill. President Tom Mearns and Carlos Rapp were selected to attend the meeting. Other activities of club included serving at the County Teacher Banquet, doing substitute teaching in the grade school and holding panel discussions on the advantages and opportunities of teaching. The program of this worthwhile organi- zation is the development of body, mind, and spirit against a background of Christian fellowship. The club, the largest in N. C. H. S. with a member- ship of approximately T70 girls, is sponsored by Mrs. Betty Jean Scholl. Unlike other clubs, admission is open to any girl in our school who desires to become a member. Approximately fifty new members were initiated into the club in a religious ceremony on February 13. After initiation, the new members may receive a membership pin. A little pressing and a little sewing is demonstrated by Louise Gill and Loretta Martin in a Home Ec. class where many girls spend long hours in preparation to becoming good future homemakers. x, . :v ,HW DJ' , , In 'u 117, , -,' -- Q. . Moving in to Keenan's right is Wotring, No. 40, and Irvin Moore, No. 43. This is one of the scoring plays of the game. The other came on a pitchout from Wotring to Keenan on the seven yard line. In the opening game of the season the Cowen Bulldogs fell before the Grizzly scoring machine 34-O. The Bulldogs did not advance beyond the 50 yard line during the game. The Grizzlies capitalized on long runs. In the first picture to the left Raymond Wotring, No. 40, plows through on a quarter-back sneak. Howard Keenan was second with 45 yards in four plays for an 111A average. In a game featuring long runs the locals traveled to Sutton September 14 to hand the Blue Devils a 31-6 defeat. The Grizzlies totaled 243 yards on five scoring plays. The longest run of the afternoon was J. P. Lanham's 88 yard third quarter sprint. The season closed with a respectable 10-10 record. - Paced by the scoring of Bob Young and Bill Neil, the rebounding of Bill Crites, Tom Mearns, and lrvin Moore, and the slick ball handling of Tom Dotson, Bob Backus, and Roscoe Dillon, the Grizzlies were well-balanced throughout the season. Two teams were added to the schedule the past season for the first time. They were Gassaway and Princeton. Gassaway was defeated twice, 89-78 and 95-81, while Princeton thumped the Grizzlies twice, 114-83 and 102-76. After the opening game loss to Ansted, 70-55, the Grizzlies traveled to Richwood for the Nicholas- Webster Warm-up Tournament where they edged past Richwood 74-72 in the opening round before losing to Webster Springs 85-65 in a hard-fought final match. Bob Ayersman and Company of Gauley Bridge provided the Grizzlies two of their toughest matches of the season. These games were made more in- teresting through the heated rivalry between the Travelers and the Grizzlies. Gauley won the first game 79-59 and in the second game the Travelers were again triumphant 99-82. Bob Young had his best night of the season as he led the locals with 33 points. N. C. H. S. defeated its arch-rival, Richwood, twice, 74-72 and 85-71, while losing one to the Lumberjacks, 82-75. Jim Young led his teammates to victory with 33 points while Bob Young topped his defeated mates with 25. The only other team to defeat the Grizzlies in both contests was Ansted who topped them 70-55 and 88-68. In the sectional tournament the Grizzlies led the Clay Panthers until midway in the fourth quarter when they fell behind and could not make a come- back. Bob Young made .the all-tournament team for his excellent offensive work. left: Bob Young fights it out with a Clay player for possession of the ball.
