is mt I Have a The 1970 Echo Published by Senior (Mass Publications Niaiitie-IIarristoun lli li School INiantie Illinois Volume XIX Editor Ramona Tuttle Assistant Editor Kathy Gray A Poem by Carl Sandburg “It is the men and women, boys and girls So poured in and out all day That give the building a soul of dreams And thoughts and memories.’' Dream Dreams—the thoughts, ideas, and hopes of tomorrow- are the lifeblood of today’s youth. We glimpse the chal- lenges open to us, and immediately our hearts jump with ecstasy at the thoughts of someday attaining our dreams. We strive harder, more vigorously, for our objective. Strain- ing onward, our goal tantalizing us from an ever-decreasing distance, we move forward. The goal, once hovering above us, is now behind us, as we surpass it and set a new, chal- lenging mark. The anticipation we experience, as we catch the full im- pact of our potential, gears our minds to our will. New challenges are essential to build our characters. As we achieve these goals and strive for higher ones, we gather mo- mentum and, lik-e the eagle, soar ever upward . .. toward the sky. This year’s senior class feels that Mr. Foy has been closer to them than just a voice. He is our own “Big Chief and leader. We look up to him with respect. Not only the respect due to a principal or to an elder, but also with the respect you feel for a good friend. If we need advice or permission, we go to Mr. Foy. He always has an answer. Our principal manages to take time from his busy schedule to attend our ballgames and other school functions. We teel that no one deserves the honor of dedication more than Mr. John Foy. We thank you for your efforts on behalf of the class of 1970. 6 Staff Expresses Thanks The 1970 Echo staff would like to thank Mrs. Rachel Ash, Miss Rebecca Stone, and Mr. John Foy for their con- tinued aid in putting together this annual. Without much warning. Miss Stone and Mrs. Ash were asked to sponsor the yearbook. Although this added to their loads as teachers, they were willing to help us. Mr Foy provided much assistance with the budget and other expense items; as well as with good advice. The seniors realize that without their help, we could not have published an annual this year. Again we wish to ex- press our thanks. Oh. Niantic! Oh. Niantic! Oh, Niantic! We’re all for you. We will fight for the gold and purple. For the glory of colors, too! Rah! Rah! School Song Boosts Spirit Never haunted and never daunted. We will fight with strength anew. Oh. Niantic! Oh, Niantic! Oh, Niantic! We're all for you! Mrs. Ruth Rambach working hard. Mr. Smith directed our Ju- nior Play and his wife supplied refresh- ments and compliments. The class of ’70 thanks you. Mr. Tom Hopkins became a senior class sponsor in our sophomore year. Although he was busy as a coach, he also found time for our class activities. Mr. Hopkins guided the winning team during junior magazine sales, 1968-69. As a result, he won a free shoe shine. The Student Council has participated in many of the school activities. Among these are the many outstanding assemblies. This year along with the six purchased assemblies are school exchange assemblies and a special pep assembly. The Student Council also helped purchase the diversa-sign which is used in the front of the building. It also sponsors the Student ot the month elections. 58 Back row: Co-editor Dave Dingman, Mrs. Ash, Managing Editor Pat Turner. Front row: Editor Joe Rozanski, Co-editor Billie Yeager. T attler The 1970 TATTLER Staff was especially industrious throughout the past year. The students learned the techniques of creating a fine paper early in the year and succeeded in publishing six issues rather than the traditional five. In this number were two six-page issues. One of the most rewarding accomplishments of the ’70 staff was a surprise front-page feature on Mrs. Ash, the TATTLER sponsor. This special issue was an expression of the gratitude for all Mrs. Ash had done for the staff. The tradition of fine high school journalism is reflected in the TATTLER and the students who are willing to be respon- sible to perpetuate it from year to year. In the fall and spring, members attend rallies to help get acquainted with homemakers from other schools. They bring home new ideas for their own chapter. A family pot- luck was held for the initiation of new members. In the spring, a Style Show was held along with installation of the new officers. Industrial Arts Participation in Industrial Arts gives each member an opportunity to engage in different crafts and develop his in- dustrial talents. Under the guidance of Mr. Finfrock, spon- sor of the organization for a fourth year, the boys learned the value of accuracy in construction and the rewards from becoming skillful in industrial work. The most satisfying re- ward is the Gold Hammer Award, presented yearly to the outstanding Senior member. The members are frequently called upon to put their knowledge of carpenter work to use by designing and build- ing any type of construction needed by our school and community. The Industrial Arts Club is certainly vital in services it performs. The club’s funds were in good shape financially this year. With the income from candy sales in the spring, they treated themselves to a feast at the Bonanza Steak House. The members are proud of having a part in purchasing the Diver- sa sign which graces the lawn of our high school. Back row: R. Matheny, S. Watt L. Mathias, S. Orr. L. Ball. D. Stahl. C. Cochran. J. Great Year for Band The 50 member high school band began it’s year by presenting pregame and halftime shows for all the home football games. Pep meetings were greatly aided by the band’s participation during the football and basketball seasons. The marching season was ended with the band participating in the Virdcn In- vitational Marching Competition, where they placed fourth. A pep band played at each home basketball game presenting the school songs, the National Anthem and many popular songs. The high school band is assisted by many girls. The Pom Pom girls add zip to football games. The marching band is led by Majorette Ann Brock and our skillful baton twirlers are Cindy Rankin and Carla Stahl. Three concerts were presented during the year, climaxed by the spring program, ‘‘The Grammy Awards.” Once again the audience enjoyed refresh- ments while seated around card tables and listening to award winning songs. Contests have gone well for the NH band members. A total of 17 medals were won for superior and excellent ratings on solos and ensembles. Bands Establish Spirit at Games The finest year yet was enjoyed by the junior high band students. Good marching experience was received by the band participating in one home foot- ball game and by marching in the homecoming parade. The band also partici- pated in two concerts. Hard work by the band produced its second consecutive I rating at both district and state contests. All six judges gave the band a 1 rating with the three judges at the state contest giving the band a perfect I rating. Junior high students also broke school records with fifteen first ratings at the state contest. A total of 70 medals and ribbons were won by the students at district and state contests as well as a band trophy. Sponsored by VEGA ENTERPRISE Mrs. Linda Bingham put new spirit into the NHHS senior high chorus. New music keyed to teens was purchased. Single handedly. she enlarged the chorus to twice its pre- vious size. Mrs. Bingham even has boys in the chorus!! Senior High Chorus The 1969-70 senior high chorus had one of the greatest years on record. It has a membership of over forty students, with many boys included for the first time in years. “Aquarius,” “Wendy,” “Scarborough Fair,” and “Daniel Jazz” were a few songs popular with the cho- rus. Conver- sation, counting numbers, the alphabet, and French songs are a few of the things learned in this extra-curricular subject, which meets dur- ing activity period on Thursdays. Student Council The Junior High Student Council members are elected to serve as representatives from their particular grade—three members each for grades six, seven, and eight. The Council hosted several dances throughout the year and initiated “casual day” in the Junior High. School supplies and candy were sold to help raise money for various activities. The S.C. had charge of con- cessions for all Junior High home basketball games. Service projects for the year included collecting for Heart Fund, welcoming the Macon County PTA Council, and partici- pating in the Fifth Grade Orientation. Mr. Turner is the Council sponsor.
