THE 19 Contents Faculty and Administration 5 Seniors 13 Classes 25 Activities 33 Organizations 45 Sports 61 Junior High 75 Advertising 87 65 ECHO Published by Senior Class Publications Volume XIX Co-Editors Kathy Orrison Steven Parish 3 IINI Dedication The Class of 1965 dedicates the Echo '65” to Mr. Richard Dunscomb for his excellent service to the school’s music department. In his three years at Niantic-Harristown, Mr. Dunscomb has initiated the seventh grade band which eventually will develop into a Jr. High Band. The high school band has received two superior ratings and an excellent under Mr. Dunscomb’s direction at the State Band Contest. He attended all band parents’ meetings and supported all their fund raising projects for the New York World’s Fair trip. Mr. D” has been an understanding friend to all his students. His youth and vitality have been an inspiration to the band members and their activities. We shall always remember Mr. Richard Dunscomb as a wonderful teacher and friend. Board of Education The Board of Education is the policy makingand governing body of the school. Its many duties are time consuming and arduous, but little recognition comes to its members. Beside the usual duties of seeing that an adequate staff is hired, that busses are maintained, and the buildings are in good repair, this year there was the added responsibility of backing a needed referendum. It was finally passed by the taxpayers in April. In the April school election, Mr. Gordon Snoeyenbos was elected to serve on the Niantic- Harristown Board of Education. Left to Right: Carl Brock, Herschel Pritchett, Kenneth Rankin, Carl Dunn, William Davis, Donald Bruce, Clyde Dial. Superintendent Mr. Gardner has worked tirelessly for the betterment of the Niantic-Harristown schools. While at Niantic, he has shown continual interest in the students and their activities, striving always for what is most beneficial to them. He has also demonstrated unceasing interest in the affairs of the community which he serves. Mrs. Ruth Rambach served ably as Mr. Gardner’s secretary. She kept the office running smoothly and efficiently throughout the year. Principal Mr. John Hickey, as principal of the high school, has capably performed the duties of his office. His understand- ing guidance has been an inspiration to both the students and faculty. His constant willingness to devote time and energy to any student’s problem is characteristic of the fine job he has done. Miss Anita Skinner served as Mr. Hickey’s secretary. Her competent assistance has relieved Mr. Hickey of many of the routine duties, freeing his time for the more complex tasks. MR. H. In Memoriam The sudden and premature loss of Miss Judy Burns in May, 1962, brought sorrow to the hearts of her friends at Niantic-Harristown High School. In her Freshman year Judy was a member of the Student Council and G.A.A. Her winning smile and cordial personality are still missed by all. 12 - Seniors % Commencement exercises for the Class of 1965 were held on May 28, at 8:00 p.m. The processional, Music For A Ceremony,” was played by the Niantic-Harristown High School Band. The invocation was given by Father McGrath of St. Ann’s Catholic Church. First Honor Students, Kathy Orrison and Steven Parish, gave their timely addresses to the large crowd. Discouraged as he is, Henry accepts. Upon returning home, how- ever, Henry discovers that he can have his room, his girl, and his job back. He is quite content until he remembers Ernest. When four people named Ernest appear at Aunt Ethel’s boarding house, the excitement rises. Compliments of State Bank of Niantic Student Council The Niantic-Harristown High School Student Council, under the direction of President Ed Combs and Advisor Mr. Angus, again had a busy year. Along with its regular duties of selecting the Stu- dent of the Month Committee and co-ordinating the Homecoming activities, the Student Council provided many interesting assemblies, including several films and a pantomimist. Slides taken by students were shown to the student body thus initiating the new screen that was presented by the Student Council this year. National Honor Society The National Honor Society is composed of students who maintain a 4.5 scholastic average and display qualities of leadership, scholarship, service, and character. Member- ship in this organization is the highest honor conferred on any high school student. The members are honored each year by the Board of Education with a banquet and an evening of entertainment. Mrs. Rachel Ash and Mr. John Hickey are the advisors.
