As we began the first semester, we found a general attitude of non- committment among those who were in control of student-admin- istrated functions. The reasons for this area of non-committment and apathy seems to have come from many sources. Probably the fore- most is that most upperclassmen did not want to relive the feelings of futility and disunity which so thoroughly permeated the Niagara campus the preceding spring. The reaction of the University Ad- ministration to the leaders of student action seemed to have left the remaining student leaders somewhat intimidated and unsure of their new relationship with the powers that be. Not only was Niagara's most fragile commodity-trustful dia- logue between students and Ad- ministration-destroyed, but mis- trust was also directed against the INDEX which the Administrative Council had put on probation for a semester. The Editor-ln-Chief for fall semester, Joe Eicheldinger, responded to the CounciI's deci- sion by stating it was an over- reaction, and indicating that a majority of the Council members do not understand the nature of a newspaper in the context of a Uni- versity. The action was felt by the - 1 9 - 'V ba. e',,.,,ff Qefi Us e' TQS1 1 fl f if ae Od 6 9 .1 q its . Richard L. Harper '72 announced early in the fall he would remain as SG President, a seat vacated by Dennis Cleary, who was put on disciplinary probation stemming from his actions in protest of the University's non-acceptance of Co-ed visitation in the Spring of 1970. The first step Harper t Trick- ey Dickie l asked for was the resignations of all Government appointees, feeling a President should be allowed to choose those with whom he wants to work. He did. At the same time SG was mak- ing an attempt to stand on its feet, the walls of the new girls' dorm, Elizabeth Seton Hall, began trem- bling. lt was the first time in Nia- gara's history that females had lived on campus. Feeling the free- dom male students had in hours and unlocked lounges, the girls raised their voices in protest of the Kardex sign-in system, and of the SAM curfew imposed on female students who had been granted parental permission for no cur- fews. Co-ed visitation also rose once again over the horizon. Thus, on the evening of Oct. 6, 1970, Seton Hall was the scene of an initially innocent college prank that later escalated into a confron- tation between students and dis- ciplinarians of near riot propor- tions. At approximately 10:30 PM residents of Seton and adjacent 0'Shea began an exchange of pleasantries including entire floors flickering their lights, blaring mu- sic across campus, and a shout- Ing contest that resulted in a dare from the residents of Seton to the then who assembled on the lawn In front of Seton and started chants of we want in and come on out. The men were answered from all floors of Seton with shouts of come on up and we want BVD'S with many females waving undergarments out of the win- dows. The mood of the partic- lpants was one of joviality as the boys raised ladders to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floor windows, and girls P9930 pushing out their screens and lowering ropes of knotted bedsheets. The men be- gan climbing into the dorm through windows unlocked for them by the girls inside. From the onset of the men at Seton, all entrances on the ground floor had been locked, and cam- pus security stationed in the lobby. Around midnight, female proctors and male RA's proceeded to eject any males in the dorm. The crowd outside started climbing down from the 2nd floor balcony and ladders were removed. Many spec- tators and participants seemed to assume the joke was over, and drifted off. However, a large group of males remained in front of Seton and began demanding en- trance. The mood changed from lightheartedn-ess to bitter determi- nation. Assaults were repeatedly made against the main doors in attempts to force entry. A group of about 50 girls then appeared in the lobby and demanded to be let outside. The group proceeded to push out and the males outside pushed in. ln the ensuing crush the secur- ity line came near to being tram- pled, while a window to the proc- tor's office was shattered resulting in two people being rushed to the hospital for injuries. Doors were then opened and students surged in. As discussion raged on, it became clear that the entire University policy on Co-ed visitation was at issue. The gen- eral opinion was expressed that the student body had reached its breaking point with regard to de- feated attempts to establish a workable policy of inter-visitation. It was felt that Student Govern- ment had repeatedly failed to gain Co-ed visitation through PYOPET legislative channels and that the only immediate course of action left to the students was one of forcefully self-initiated Co-ed visi- tation. The group in the ground floor lounge was reinforced by up to 500 more men who proceeded to force their way completely into the dorm and spread to all floors. Their arrival was met with mixed emotions. Some women became terrified and locked themselves in their rooms. Others were angry over lost study and sleep time, The large majority welcomed and encouraged the men to visit their rooms: and the visitation lasted until 5 AM the next morning. The result was Niagara Univer- sity made the New York Times as having been the first to have a disturbance this year. As the fall semester progressed a few more weeks, the INDEX was taken to task for its printing of an abortion ad and letter- to- the- editor. This situation was made in- famous by the lNDEX's black issue on Halloween containing an editorial entitled lf Jesus Heard that He Would Puke . The newspaper took its stand to re- assert its inalienable right to print any news or information it saw fit. The N.U. Communications Board supported this decision. All the while SG played its petty games of fighting over class finan- cial allocations, which lasted all semester until a budget was finally passed the next semester. SG wasn't the only ones to have financial difficulties. The Univer- sity had a most trying year finding itself deeply in the red. lt was forced to cut back on banquets, alcohol fthe drinking kindl, and quality education. It was a year for fiscal follies indeed. On December 11, 1970, for the first time in over ten years, the unchallenged power of that sacro- sanct inner-ring of male chauvin- ism that once called itself the Editorial Board of the Niagara IN- DEX was smashed as Liz Ruiz tTequilal, the Iron Maiden of the journalism set was announced as the new Editor-in- Chief. December also brought the def- inite refusal of Co-ed visitation by the University Senate. After much work by the Inter-Dorm Council, chaired by Frank Marchese, to poll and comprise a detailed re- port which showed the students favored Co-ed visitation, the Sen- ate slammed the door in the stu- dents' faces by a vote of 21 nos and 11 yes. Niagara re- ceived national recognition in not only basketball but soccer and track as well. Though some of the teams were shadowed by the misfortune of defeat, this should not detract from the ability of the hard-working fine young athletes that make up these teams. The sports season began with the 1970 version of club football. Losing only to Kings College and Canisius College, the Purple Football Eagles com- piled a 4-2-1 season's record. Lead by the fantastic effort of Mike Degary, Cayle Smith, John Scotto and Mike O'Connellg the record since 1967, when club football at Niagara began, is 15-10-2. The nationally recognized soccer team compiled an 11-3 record during the fall season. Lead by All- american Joe Casucci, and Nelson Oyowe, this year's soccer team was the best in its three year existence. Joe Casucci broke all soccer scoring rec- ords and was honored in Sports lllustrated's Faces in the Crowd. Goalie Mike Miller provided outstand- ing defensive play allowing an average of less than two goals per game. Junior Mike Gomez was named successor to Al Montagna as coach. The Fall golfers also compiled an excellent record for Niagara. Winning the Little Three Championship, the NU golfers posted a 7-5-2- record. They also fin- ished second out of twenty teams at the R.I.T. lnvi- tational. The sensation of the fall sports scene was the cross-country team which posted a 12-1-1 record. With the aid of Tom Carter, cross-country star from Binghamton, N.Y., the NU runners won the Little Three Championship and the Upstate New York Championship. As fall became winter, the NU swimmers made their show. Although they posted a 6-8 record, they did get a chance to meet the fighting Irish of Notre Dame at the St. Bonaventure pool. The NU Swimmers placed sixth in the Upstate New York Championship at St. Bonaventure. Then came basketball. The Purple Eagles con- cluded their 1970-71 campaign with a 14-12 record, and a season which hosted some spectacular and unusual events. They participated in four overtime contests, defeat- ing only Canisius in overtime plays, and losing to Gannon and to Minnesota in single overtime, and to Villanova in double overtime. In addition to this NU was involved in two one-point games, winning one and losing the other. Coach Layden's three-year rec- ord is now 47-32. Captain Marshall Wingate led the Purple Eagles in most points t510l, best average Q1 9.61, and best field goal percentage t46.5l, which placed him 14th on the NU all-time scoring list with 839 points in two seasons. Wayne Jones, the only senior, was leading re- bounder averaging 12 per game, and second leading scorer averaging 16.5 points per game. Wayne was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the college draft. The victory over St. Bonaventure in the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium was perhaps the most sensa- tional event of the whole season. This ended the Eagles' 17-game losing streak. Niagara defeated the Brown Indians with a score of 76-59. Outstanding in that Qame was high scorer Marshall Wingate with 23 points and high rebounder Wayne Jones with 13 re- bounds. Wayne, incidentally, was presented with the net from the game. This win brought NU into a tie with the Bonnies for the Little Three crown. This is the first time since 1955 that the Purple Eagles won or tied for the Little Three title. No discussion of basketball is complete without mentioning the freshman team. Coach Joe DeGreg- orio and his frosh posted a 19-5 record in the 1970- 1971 season. Their biggest win came with a 126-125 overtime victory over AI Maroone Ford, in the Student Center. Kerry Reedy led the baby Eagles in scoring for the season averaging 21.1 points per game. High re- bounder Cleve Royster was second in scoring aver- aging 20.7 points per game. The spring season saw a fine baseball club again under the direction of Joe DeGregorio. They posted a 16-4 season, much improved over the 1969-1970 mark of 5-17. Shortstop Gary Tremer led the baseball Eagles with a .415 batting average. Pitcher Rick Brand posted a 5-0 season holding an earned run average of 0.84. Pitcher Doug Farrell, who doubles as a guard on the basketball team, threw a 6-1 sea- son, holding an earned run average of 1.86. Fresh- man Mike Neadner, second in batting average with .354, led the team in home runs with four. Thus the 1970-1971 sports season came to a close with sports fans anxiously looking towards a better season next year. Nick Pettinico I ' X V41 r - Yin,-awvwusj - , . , .J ,, 1 . X 1' , . For the beauty and awe of nature the Falls ranks supreme. However, when nature has left off, man has failed in an attempt to enhance the natural beauty of the area. The city is totally devoid of any artistic or architectural merit. lt is dirty and drab, and polluted, with most ofthe build- ings done in a Howard Johnson motif. The Falls, in a word, is uninspiring. This presents a challenge to Niagara students who must live here for eight months out of the year. What am I going to do this weekend and Where am I go- ing to go are the two most wildly asked questions. The prospects for having a good night out on the town are distinctly limited. But the man once said Good times are made, not had and the residents of the Ridge are past masters of improvisation, a credhto Yankeeingenuhy. The locus of all social activity is the now infamous and legendary Student Center, or if you prefer, Stu- pid Center! Amid the cocoa-splattered table tops, the cigarette ashes and the uninvitable cup of coffee, plans are formulated andl or shattered for the upcom- ing weekends. Indeed, some of these sessions would rival the Joint Chiefs in their complexity and dura- tion. Experts are consulted. lHey, Dirty Dan, how's Buffalo ths time of year?l Logistical considerations are accounted for. lLet's see-20 guys . . . that aver- ages out to about 20 cases . . . I. There are a number of possibilities open to the students. I say number for want of a better term, so don't get the idea that the options are many and varied, in fact, there are three. The oldest and most popular pasttime is, I shudder to say it, drinking. The Niagara Falls area is aptly equipped for this nefarious pasttime. A reliable Re- search firm, Stumpjite and Brothers, has established that for every square mile in the city there are 3.75 bars, dance-halls, and other minor atrocities con- tained in that square of God's good earth. Date City is the next choice and one only dates after a great amount of soul-searching and consul- tation by one's peers- Whaddaya want to go out with her for? The last option is the boob tube, the stomping grounds of the McLuhan followers. The aforementioned choices are not ranked ac- cording to preference, but rather to degree of popu- larity lyou don't have to like to drink to go to the Shed l. Sad, but true, drinking at Niagara is No. 1. The Women's Christian Temperance League finds this to be a shocking example of the Communist plot to undermine the virtues of the youth of this country and has established Niagara as its priority target. Bud, Pabst, Bash, Old Crow, J8IB, and Jenny Cream are all insidious beverages that Niagara stu- dents quaff down. The drinking that goes on up on the Ridge is not confined to the male populace: our distaff members are equally frightening in their abil- ty to consume alcohol. Everyone knows the name of Sally the Slease who was known for her ability to ollld was Juli' ama Ni alll' b00' will stud mile Tl basl whel suml live best lakef gamr hour buzz knov blasl are 1 anyll cade no lo lhe ll body in lhr Fo on or crew weelr you r as yo A ins, lo s poc rich som lure Post min is ash ' Biiis 'j mild' isljiieiinpiiiln ns ,un'W'i0rlrei1ebiiii2i Off, 2:18 Supreme egu'iinl,,l ltural bn has failed inowiil f any ari?u!y of the green 's Hndp :SIIG Oi' iiliililepil m WWW We lwaea Jones, ,, 'lSlnleei lSprring, 'I note, ni Hi 5 Cilallen . eight months out i ii.1'ile e r havignosl wildly asjmk illim' gagoodiilhlnl 3 ned. our them, lie made, noth it lille Ile tohiagefa mm l ad Indlhe ' J Past masters 1' -Ml l9enuily. 0 lmpmmif iocialaclivil islh ' 5 lent Center, gr il ysurzwag th ' S 9 Cocoa-splalleredlalej, 1 and the uninvilable cup clog , landlorshalleredlorlheupoe I de SOIlle ol these sessiensrei sin their complexilyandon ' nsulled. lHey, Dirty Dan,lni i 'ear?l Logislical considerate: al's see-20 guys . . .lhalne 3 i:ases...l. er of possibilities open tele er for want ol a bellerlen hal the options are nanynl I three. popular pasllime is, l thliil I Niagara Falls area is itil ous pasltime. Fortunately, she was hit by a wayward snow plow on a humid day in July and never did get a chance to change her amateur standing. Niagarans will drink, anytime and anywhere. Usu- ally they prefer tiny, sweat-laden bistros, where the booze is cheap and the company plentiful. Any bar will do and it is an established fact that the average student will visit upwards of 40 bars, all within a ten mile radius, over the span of a four-year period. The height of the social whirl usually occurs around basketball season. You have a pre-game prime where you and a number of your fellows sit in your sumptuous suites, on campus, and discuss the rela- tive merits of the opposing teams while you do your best to destroy a keg of beer. The local constabulary takes a dim view of drinking during the gladatorial games, so you are forced to abstain for a number of hours until the festivities are over. But at that final buzzer you then have an atrocity of major proportions known as the post-game PUTSCH. Socials, beer blasts by the Lions and special nights at the Shed are all heavily attended and cries of Don't you do anything but drink are quickly smothered in a cas- cade of beer. It is for this reason that beer blasts are no longer held in the LLSC. The beer lies so heavy on the floor that in the morning it was not rare to see the body of an NU Maintenance man floating face down in the muck. For the really hard-core drinkers, there is a society on or off campus known as Social Lions. This hardy crew of boozehounds, yahoos, and misfits provides weekly entertainment at a modest price. For 82.00 you can goto Lions and drink your face off and laugh as you do it. As in every major sport, there is a fine art to drink- ing, but I will not attempt to explain it here. Suffice it to say that if you go out with two dollars in your pocket and come back roaring drunk and five dollars richer you most certainly have reached a peak of some kind. It also might easily result in getting a pic- ture of yourself posted on the bulletin board in the Post Office, so don't get caught. Date City is not so much a place but a state of mind. One embarks on this ego trip by securing the services of some young lovely from Niagara's re- nowned Co-Ed Corps. Niagara Falls offers up a veri- table plethora of things to do for the young couple. You might journey to one of the city's finer restau- rants . . . like Carrol's . . .where a sumptuous meal is Prepared by a competent and courteous staff . . . One hamburger, hold the onions! Show time is readily available on Niagara's Great White Way where you might see anything from the arts . . . The Barber of Seville . . . to the avant-garde . . . Frankenstein meets 50 Dwarfs. Then for a nightcap a short hop to one of the city's supper clubs might be in order ...Joe's for an example. To transport you throughout the evening a Iimosine driven by a competent and courteous chauffeur may be secured for a mere pittance from one of the local hack bureaus. That'll be 754 for the first 100 feet, fella. If you don't engage in any of these activities and are something of a al dwarf bl weirdo cj hermit dj one of these el all of these fl some of these or are a weird dwarfed hermit, then you probably watch the idiot box while the rest of us are out pretending we are having a good time. Watching the tube may be dull but it sure is cheap. With the twist of a dial one may enjoy a top-shelf sporting event . . . The World Two-Man Yucca Tree- Scaling Competition or a first-run movie . . . Jesse James Flobs Ding-Dong School. Refreshments are readily available from Honey's, home of the non- pizza, the caterers who have no equal. . . no one is as equally bad. You can sit in your comfortable chair and cast yourself into nether world of hayburners, science fiction, and the eleven o'cIock news with Irv Wien- stein. Nether world it might be, but you are more than likely going to fall asleep with the thing on. But don't despair Niagarans, if the picture l've just given you is just a little depressing, don't let it bug you. A lot of people I have known who have gone through four years at Niagara wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. And if you believe that, you'Il believe anything.
