To THE CLASS of 1956: As did the Romans many centuries ago, we find ourselves in a posi- tion which demands world leadership. World leadership in our time can- not be achieved by hydrogen bombs and space platforms or even atoms for peace, lt requires nothing less than an urgent program to develop the most valuable natural resource we have, and the most difhcult to process -the educated man. If education demanded the most heroic sacrifices, we would be certain to succeed. We Americans can be counted upon to rise to a great occasion. we will draft our sons into the army or launch a ten- billion-dollar foreign-aid effort, but education has not been considered heroic enough to excite us to adequate action. I feel confident that the leaders of your generation will view education with the urgency it deserves. My best wishes go with you as you leave Niagara Falls High School. 'Zi V' , Principal I. There is great need today for young people who have high ideals and good character as well as trained minds. lf a person is unscrupulous,-then the more knowledge he has, the more dangerous he may become. Or, if he is selfish and indifferent, he may,-like Nero misusing a violin,-fiddle foolishly while Rome burns tc ashes around him. The truly great men of the past were actively interested in the wel- fare of others and alert to the needs of their times. Julius Caesar's military genius might have made him only a tyrant, his courtesy and generosity toward those he conquered and his justice as a ruler made him revered by all Rome. So the educational experiences you have had in high school may be put to good use with courage, unselfishness, and a sense of respon- sibility for the future.
