To The Class of I954 May I congratulate you on your selection of Music as the theme of p your Yearbook. Music is o universal language and as such is one of the common experiences open to all students. It serves as a unifying force l among peoples of all nations who have so many divergent interests and ideals. I have been impressed with the fact that amaior proportion of our High School students carrya full program of the so-callecl basicsubiects but also elect avariety of courses in the creative arts. They graduate from our High Schools with a much broader foundation than those of my generation. May I extend my best wishes for your future success. William J. ' N- I K asian Youfggf 'THE iT'Op 5 YOKTVS' To The Class of T954 fi . W '1 First of all I want to congratulate each of you on completing your secondary school education. This, as ina musical scale, can be likened to a note, and having accomplished that note, you are ready to tackle the next one and progress through the entire scale. Life is very similar and can be successful by climbing the ladder of achievement step by step. I wish you all the luck possible in doing so. James H. Erwin Deputy Superintendent To The Class of 1954 Possibly life's greatest triumph is victory over one's self. A person can be his own worst foe, his most serious problem, and his greatest stumbling block. He can also be his own best friend, his most helpful counsellor, and his greatest booster. Often these two sets of qualities are in sharp conflict when one is trying to decide between what he wants to do and what he should do. Many times the hardest battles are fought with one's self from within. Every noble aspiration that one encourages, every temptation that one resists, every bitter word that is withheld makes a worthwhile contribution to one's personal development. Victory over one's self is vital, because in the struggle for happiness and achievement, the richest rewards always go to those who have mastery over themselves. In the years to come you will bring honor to yourself and to your Alma Mater ln direct proportion to the degree of self mastery which you attain My best wishes go with you as you leave Niagara Falls High School Wm F Jack Principal l'n.llllJtl'6l ll0I'l re?-p 'T' bqx s ,J i JVM! f fl -,J .ff fgl-UEF xl fi-gf 5- bf To The Class of i954 ln a world where modern Industrial and technical advances tend to em- phasize the need for competence it is important for young people to acquire in school as much knowledge and skull as possible We need to consider, however that living successfully requires more than a trained mind To learn something of the eternal values of human living, one must become self-disciplined, considerate of others, and motivated by the ideal of service l hope that your experience at Niagara Falls High School has given you much more practical and useful training l hope also that you have acquired here the breadth of vision which will help you develop your own strength of character and personality, and meet your future responsibilities with good-will and mtegrlty. My sincere good wishes go with you. When we entered Niagara Falls High School inthe fall of 1952, as eager and interested juniors, we soon came to realize that the seniors were taking advantage of their position. Our eagerness was replaced with feelings of dismay when we finally realized that the music room wasn't in the fourth floor annex and the chemistry laboratory wasn't next to room 150. It wasn't long until we became acquainted with the building and our fellow classmates. We were then ready to take an active part in school activities. Red Weber was chosen as vice-president of the Student Council. Shortly after this election we elected our Junior class officers who were: Manlio De Santis, president, Ken Martin, vice-president, Pat Mason, secretary and Mike Alonzo, treasurer. One of the most interesting assemblies that we saw in our Junior year was the one featuring a snake collector where one of our own students held an eight foot long snake. Those dramatically inclined ably presented The First Year and Harvey assisted by Mr. Frank Baggallay. During the year the halls and rooms of the school were painted and this made a much pleasanter atmosphere. Athletic events took place all through the year with our Football and Basketball teams taking first place. In our senior year our athletic record fell iust a little behind taking second place in Football in Niagara Frontier League Competition. Thanksgiving and Christmas showed the students just what a talented Music Department we have. They presented two unusually fine programs. During the fall of T953 another improvement was made around the school. This was the addition of fluorescent lighting which made school work so much easier. Under the leadership of our Senior class officers, Mason, Mark Allinson, Henry Holka, Ben Johns and Pat Mason the senior class sponsored a magazine drive and the proceeds are being used to help defray our senior expenses. During our two years at Niagara Falls High School we have attempted to carry on the fine tradi- tions passed down to us. We will relinquish our place of leadership to the Junior class when our president presents the mantle of leadership to the Junior class president, Angelo Massaro, on class day. The average age of these Guys and Dolls when they first entered our halls of knowledge was Sweet Sixteen. Somewhere Along the Way they voted that their favorite all time hit tune was Stardust. These critics also pass the word that Never Before has there ever been a male vocalist like Eddie Fisher while some others say Anywherel Wander Julius La Rosa will be tops with me . Although many of you may Wonder Why, Joni James drew top honors as the favorite female vocalist but as Time went by, we found many who favored the divine Sarah Vaughan. Stan Kenton with his famous Artistry in Rhy- thm orchestra was voted tops by those who knowl To Mrs. Donovan we of the senior class of i954 say that After You there will never be another English teacher that is So Rare. EDDIE WHATLING and JIM BRENNEN are still doing things the hard wayl Our attention is once more placed upon the stage as the KROMER curtains are drawn. This time we are to witness the world's outstanding acrobats, JOANNE LIN- ZA and HENRY RAJCZAK, assisted by MARGIE ROCCO who will singas they swing. The trumpets begin to blare as BAR- BARA CHABALA and her famous husband, DUANE ECKER, prance onto the stage with their family of chimpanzes named after their old familiar friends, NORMA F INITZ, BOB DUTKO, MARY ANN DONOFRO, GABE PORTO, MARIE WROBLEWSKI, and CAROL UREN. What is all the commotion about? As we turn we see sev- eral guests coming in late. First in line is SHIRLEY WAL- TON, Chi Chek- chinese laundry woman, ELLEN WHITEHEAD, Peanut Bender, AUDREY THOMPSON, prominent turkey sales- woman, and DARWIN LOWE, lecturer on Your health of Your Body. As we look at our program we notice that ANN VER- ROCCHI, BILL WESTUND, CAROL AMENDOLA and LARRY FAVORITE are going to give their rendition of the well known dance, Slaughter of MOVESIAN and GARCIA Street. One of the most amazing acts is the high dive by RALPH GOUGEON who dives off the JOSEPH diving board into a cup of BUTERA Mixture and is carried away by BRIAN HARTER and BEVERLY HAGER. Turning the pages we see that CAROL HASSELFELT, MARGARET DOAN, JOANNE McQUEENI-IY, BETTY MEDA- LIS, and KENT BLAKELOCK are going to play, All about Ronnie on their BUXTON pianos. I-leavensl Some people sure are lazy. Here comes GERRY SHEPHERD being driven down the aisle in her WRIGHTometer which is operated by GIL PIERONI. After placing her in her seat, he takes MADAME FII-'I CUDDY, expert Hairstylist, to the OLIVER Candy Coun- ter. Next on the agenda is the play NORDOFF and DAMIA- NO. Leading characters are STEVE PASEK and KAY CASH- ER. Understudies are TOM MOORE and IRENE JARZAB. POP QC? We have heard the rumor that HARRY HOOPER and WIL- HELMINA DOBBS are practicing for their next movie entitled, Life with JIM LOGAN and his wife, CAROL WEINSTEIN, which will soon be seen on broadway in the FADEL theatre. But that isn't all. TONY GAGLIARDO has just developed a new POIRIERmobile. It is equipped with 275 horsepower and is lined with GAMBOIAN fur. Blackhawk BAIA is to be the first to drive it. JUDY FROMMERT, DICK HILLIER, DORA MING, LOUIE PAONE, and BARBARA CHRISTY are next on stage giving a five minute exhibition of the Do's and Don'ts of Basketball, followed by APPOLONEY, BAKER and BATTAGLIA doing a three part harmony to BITTENBENDER'S composition, Waltz- ing with My VanVOLKINBURG. PAT ZIMMER, LILY BOW- MAN, JUDY BRINKLOW, and ANN COLAVECCHIA entertain us now with an exciting demonstration on the trampoline. As stage crew hands, RICHARD COLLETTA, RONNIE TRAINA, and BRUCE CARTER remove the remains of the last act, we witness JO ANN DeNOTO, famed seal trainer as she performs with her pet seal, PETE JULIAN the II. Now as the curtains rise for the last time, we witness the grand finale-starring MARILYN DEITCH and her s1ew-foot- seven: GRACE HOGAN, JOHN MOLINARO, ELAINE NEU- MAN, JAMES KENNEDY, FLOYDE BEEBE, BOB LABOSKY , and last but not least ANN MARBLES ALLOTTA as they give out with a good hearty rendition of THAWEE. Thus, the editorial staff of the '54 Niagarian has incorporated music as the theme for the yearbook. In Striving toward yearbook perfec- tion, they have tried to devote each section of the yearbook to a phase of the musical world. As the editorial staff, under the advisership of Mrs. H. Donovan, applied music to the articles and photographic work, so did the Art Staff under the di- rection of Mr. M. The success of the play itself and the smoothness with which it was staged was due to the infe cast and its accredited director, Mr. Frank Baggallay. Life with Father , an American comedy classic, set a world's record when it ran con- tinuously on Broadway for eight years. It brings back the pattern of family living of the past gen- eration, by captivating the true character in- stincts of father, a roaring, but warm-hearted person, mother, firm-minded but fragile, and the family of red-headed boys they raised. The play creates a strong feeling of nostalgia for some, as it recalls familiar family incidents such as visiting cousins, hand-me-down-clothes, and young boys selling patent-medicines to earn pin money. The cast included Edgar Abray as Father, Diana Nassau--Mother, Richard Coletta--Clar- ence, Angelo La Duca--John, Ellis Moc Sporran --Whitney, Marilyn Deitch--Cora, Mary Anne Mc Nulty--Mary, Don McGinnis--Doctor Hum- phreysp Audrey Westfall-Margaret, Claudia Weiner--Annie, Vincennette Morinello--Delia, Joyce Smith--Nora, Maggie--Linda Neff. t i Niagara Falls High School's Junior Red Cross isavery active and worthwhile group under the conscientious supervision ot one representative from each homeroom.
