Co the Graduates: It has been brief thas it not?j, your stay at Newtown. Perhaps you remember back to that first day you came here, how long the dis- tance to graduation seemed. But your high school years have not been long: they have passed swiftly. The years ahead will pass even more swiftly, each year more rapid- ly than the one before. The Roman poet, Horace, summed up the situa- tion in four words: Carpe dienzf fugit bow. QSeize the day: the hour slips awayj Seize the day indeed! Clutch these precious days of youth to you. Make them yield a rich harvest for your later use. Seize them, not in Horaces meaning of the words fEat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we diej, but rather, seize them for the opportunities they will give you and which you will never have again. Wfhether you are college bound or career bound, I sincerely hope that Newtown has prepared you well to make theie next years count, prepared you in mind but especially in heart and in character.
