We jfhfzsfm A fluffy ball raced madly around the yard. Excited little yelps issued from the almost invisible mouth, curving below a quaint button nose. Excitement literally dripped from the stubby tail as it wiggled back and forth in feverish ecstacy. Round and round the fluffy ball galloped until the eager hind legs overlapped the front legs, and poor little Tubby rolled into a foolish heap against the rose arbor. With a quivering heart, Tubby looked behind him. Over there in the corner of the yard was a mammoth hole where he had intended to bury his bone. Now his bone lay forgotten, for out of that hole had arisen a monster, the equal of which Tubby had never seen. It had simply glared at Tubby with a ferocious stare, and Tubby hadn't bothered to stay to inquire about its intentions. Now that the butterflies had gone from his stomach, Tubby began to feel just a tiny tinge of curiosity. After all, Tubby was two-months old now, and he certainly didn't have to be afraid of any monster, no matter how big. With a, barely noticeable hesitation, Tubby trotted to within a safe distance of that gaping hole. He stopped and sniffed the air cautiously. With a visible sigh, Tubby prepared to take the final steps. Within the rim of the hole there was a restless movement, and a little pebble rolled like thunder in the stillness. Tubby's legs went rigid, his ears alerted, and the thick hair along his back bristled stiffly. Excitement bubbled over into the form of a fierce yip which broke pitifully in the middle. Tubby shook his fears from him and began to stalk his prey in earnest. To the entice- ment of a few more yips, the monster, with brown fur, a big chunky head, pointed ears, and a long wiry tail, rose from it's lair, to the challenge. ' A fierce battle ensued. Tubby was jubilant and frightened by turns. Twice the gear- like teeth of the monster had closed upon Tubby's foot and he howled with pain. Then Tubby mastered his courage, made one final lunge, and the skirmish was over. Here then, was mortal evidence of Tubby's courage. On the threshold of his cozy home, a monstrous rat lay silent in death. -CAROL CLARK. I8
