CLASS HISTORY In September of that momentous year 1941, forty members of the Freshman class invaded Newtown High School. The worthy David Cassidy presided over the few but construc- tive Uj meetings with the able support of Harvey Rassmussen, vice-president: Margaret Beardsley, secretary: and Carol Hill, treasurer. The basketball season rolled around and the Freshmen were well represented by four girls and one boy on the varsity teams. Could this have been the reason the teams won so few games? We were the first Freshmen to have the honor of attending the annual Junior-Senior reception and we certainly made the most of it -diligently studying Emily Post for weeks in advance. Standing at the helm of a now stable ship during our Sophomore year was Mac Page, ably assisted by Ruth Butensky as vice-presi- dentg Elizabeth Haefele as secretary: and Miriam Rasmussen as treasurer. Before long we were on one of our most successful ven- tures, the hilarously enjoyable Sadie Hawkins dance. This was definitely one of the most original dances ever given by any one class and we felt quite elated-doubly so when we gazed upon our bountiful profits. With the departure of David Cassidy for service in the Navy the presidency of the Junior class was taken over by Grete Hansen, the vice- president. We started off by choosing our class rings early in the term, but because of the war- time production lag we did not reecive the rings until May. The enterprising sociology class- Juniors again-founded, in the year 1944, the ROMP. The organization proved very success- ful and helped to enliven many Friday nights which would otherwise have been dull. Later that fall Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors produced She Was Only a Farmer's Daughter, an old-fashioned melodrama, in competition with several other schools at Dan- bury State Teacher's College. As a carry-over from the Rotary Club de- bate in our Sophomore year the Junior and Senior classes debated in assembly on the topic Should High School Students Take Exams . The negative side won. CWe're still taking them, thoughlj A lull in literary accomplish- ments for the years spurred our class on to publish the first series of the Hawley Hi and Lo . Contributors spent long hours planning the contents of the paper - sports, language, science, literature -- only to find in the end that it was our clever column Meow that received the most attention. Cand com- ment?j Early in the spring of '44 the Juniors added to their well-earned title of ambitious Jun- iors when they organized a food sale to be held at one of the town's auctions. This little project greatly increased our financial promi- nence and gave the-powers-that-be more confidence in our brain-storms. The usual anxiety over the Junior Prom aroused an early interest in planning for this eventful occasion. Despite the fact that an acute male shortage brought forth untold escort problems and that war needs created several complications, our class produced what was termed as one of the most successful of Junior Proms . Cn the last day of school our somewhat dwindled class said goodbye to a prosperous Junior year and with great anticipation looked to our Senior- ity . With exceeding dignity of bearing we strode through Hawley's doors the following September. After eleven long years of feverish studying to keep our heads dry while wading through the river of knowledge we found our- selves practically within reach of the other shore. That is, the nineteen of us who were left to carry on. Seniors at last! After electing Roland Geiger as president and Barbara Sniffen as editor of the traditional yearbook, the work began to unfold itself. At the same time the class, ex- pressing a keen desire to produce a senior play, appointed committees to read and select a play. Deciding to produce the three-act comedy He Couldn't Marry Five , we chose a cast of eight senior girls and two junior boys and we are now in the midst of the production, which we hope will be ready in April. Our four years of high school will be re- membered by us not as the most care-free years of our lives but as a period saddened immeasur- ably by the most devastating war in history. And as those of us who are left leave the doors of Hawley High we will continue to hope for our own success and for the safe return of our members in the service.
