It showed en- thusiasm, spirit, and the ability to win. The final record was 4 wins-5 losses, and in Dual County League competition, they posted a 2-4 record. A few mental mistakes and 4 points stood between the Lions and first place in the D.C.L. The Lions' defensive unit played aggressively and tenaciously all year long. Led by tackle David Smith and ends, Steve Kasten and Mark Sullivan, the Lions proved themselves in tough situations. Other defen- sive standouts for the Lions were linebackers Bill Penzo and Ioe Walsh, linemen Eric Dewaard, Ronnie Yerardi, Ion Bovarnick, and Peter Alexander. Also playing well in the Lions' secondary were Gerry MacDonald, Mike Kasten, Rob Steinberg and Mike Dery, with backup help from Chris McManus, Ieff Bovarnick, and Kevin Richardson. The offense had its ups and downs when senior quarterback Ieff Lerner was sidelined for a couple of important games. Nevertheless, the Lions moved the ball well with Scott Buffington doing most of the ball carrying, along with Mitch Podufaly. While Lerner's highly respectable passing percentage is meritorious, much of the credit must also go to the Lions' offen- sive line which enabled receivers, such as end Mark Hayden, to break free into open areas. The season was thus a team effort. .J ' ffm:- lk '1' ' Q .-.. f-- M- ai Q,Hf a 'lawn ff 'sq' 14 m 'fm' 1 , I A -. l :fL'?!- , X: ,Sd U J X .3 if ' x :lf Vw if f J - 'JW 'Qu 'Q 139, .1 we-W if QNR V Gil' I 5 Q , ,-Q 1 , A J r ' 5 i 1 , 5 I ' Y 1 . Furthermore, many of the defeats were matches that nearly ended as South victories. The climax of the season was a game against a tough Brockton squad. Although Newton South lost, they challenged Brockton with unrelenting com- petition throughout the match and proved their esti- mable ability. There are six seniors who will be greatly missed next year. Co-captain Michele DeFazio led the team with her consistency in accurate bumping. Spikers Ioanne Golding, Anne Morehouse and Lauren Kauf- man helped the team with their forceful serving and spiking. Setters Tami Kan and co-captain Sara Frim had a great season, setting up their spikers and enabl- ing them to score points. This year's seniors all added something special to the team. Their friendliness and leadership helped to maintain an exciting season. The 1979 Volleyball Team learned the importance of teamwork and consistency. Next year's team should be even more successful because the en- thusiasm for volleyball at Newton South is increasing. However, few teams deserve as much credit as this year's Newton South Cross-Country Team. With a 1-5 season, South's record hardly reflects a solid performance. However, there certainly was no lack of ambition as South won its first meet in two years, a definite improvement. Furthermore, Bob Mosca and Ieff Nottonson consistently placed in all their meets. Seniors Bob Partridge, Bob Fast, Matt Kelley, and sophomore Mark Koning all placed in at least one meet during the season. Ieff recorded the teams best time of the season with a 13:39 mark at Mount Ida, South's home course. The personal achievements of Newton South's run- ners are numerous. Ieff Nottonson and Bob Mosca placed fourth and twelfth, respectively, in the Dual County League meet. This meet takes place at the end of the year and involves all the Leagues runners. Because of their respectable performances, Ieff and Bob were first team all-stars. Bob Partridge's fine running in the meet placed him on the second team. South presented the Most Improved Player Award to Bob Fast. He im- proved his time in every meet at Mount Ida with an overall improvement of 32 seconds. Iennifer Sharp showed her eagerness as she was the only girl on the team. It is hoped that next years overall participation will be greater. 21 GIRLS' SUCCER first Hou loich Chunk Hurwitz Lindi Sptiztr Rithel I-inn Diane lloulihan Capt Mithtllc Miller tipt Lauri Sacks ltnnx lxnight Sharon Sussmin Coach Piul Murphy Annibeth Winegrad Suomi Row Patty Sullixan Ioanne Be ittx Lisa Botti Carol 'lenint Patrice Cilxin Linda Martin Colleen Daley Pam L. Their 6-4-3 record is a record to be proud of - especially since the competition in the Dual County League was so tough this year. Defense for Newton South was an important factor. Next year's defensive line will miss the strength and strategy of co-captain Laura Sacks, the hustle of Iohanna Hurley, and the accuracy of Linda Speizer. The two goalies, Rachel Finn and Ienny Knight, who combined to produce 6 shutouts, also will be missed. The threatening offense of Newton South's team of ten resulted in victory. The agile and aggressive co- captain Michelle Miller led the team with 9 goals and 7 assists. Diane Houlihan was also a key to the success of the offense as she scored 7 goals and 6 assists. Sharon Sussman's speed was a great asset to the forward line as she often beat her opponents to the ball. The team M'-fe -H regrets the loss of Laura Sheingold and Ellen Sheridan to knee injuries. Their playing was greatly missed. The girls' soccer team has been a varsity sport for only three years. The team's success is due to the patience and effort of Coaches Chuck Hurwitz and Paul Murphy. While the record of 1-8-3 was an improvement over last year's mark, the team still failed to fulfill its potential. Even so, we were in all but three games, with two of the ties occurring when our opponent scored with less than three minutes left in the game. What distinguished this year's team from the past was enthusiasm and a willingness to work hard. The team was young with returning seniors, Ken Robbins and Robert Schlossman, anchoring key positions in the de- fense. There were no stars on the team, but coaches Hans Westerkamp and Stelois Groussis expected every- one to do his best. What we lacked in skills and size we made up in determination and hustle. The season opened with an impressive 2-1 win over Concord-Carlisle. However, the team suffered a crippl- ing blow when, in the seasons debut, first string goalie Greg Brown was lost due to an injury. Nevertheless, next year's team, with a strong nucleus returning, should prove more competitive than this year's team. The new co-captains, Paul Aries and George Groussis, will be ably supported by Mike Duffy, Peter Schlossman, Keith Harris and Kyle Richards. The talents of leaving seniors Ken Robbins, Greg Brown, Robert Schlossman, Brian Duffy, Devin Stewart, Martin Bern, and Steven Pilavin will be greatly missed next year. if i irst Bow Martin Bern Roiert Schlossmin Devin Stewart Capt Greg Brown Capt Ken Robbins Bri in Duffx Brian McNally Stexen Pilaxin Second How Mike Duffv Harald Poulsen Paul Aries Daxid Miller Dixid Phillips lxxlt Richards keith Harris Ceorgt Croussis Third Bow Coach Stan Croussis Louis Dakovannis lly lx xe Eddie llZ Randy Wong Prter Sthlossmin Coich Hans Westerk imp if ,Y iw' . We lost many games, but we never gave in. Lack of experience was the main reason. Although we tried hard, we never did win. Our captains inspired us with hope, Encouraged us and demonstrated skill. With loss in store at the end of our rope, It was Laura and Sharon who kept up our will. The forward line was very strong, With Karen in the center spot. Support from both Carols brought the ball long, To the circle where they'd set up a shot. lane, Patti, lean and Dinah were up front, Theresa and Caroline guarding the goal, While Carolyn Duggan was in on the hunt, All trying real hard with their sticks and soul. Coaches Blanchard and Anderson with patience Taught us to snarf, sprint, and all the rest. They kept up our spirits - even in the end. Thanks to you both, we think you're the best! But many fine unex- pected performances were turned in from wrestlers. and the team finished the season with a record just below five hundred. Captain Ben Schwalb led the team by example on and off the mat. Coing into the final match of the season. Schwalb posted a perfect 14-0 record. Ben also took first place in the Catholic Memorial Christmas Tournament at 140 lbs. Senior Scott Buffington was also a key factor in the success of the team, Buffington wrestled ex- ceptionally well all season, and he placed second in the Christmas Tourney at 147 lbs. Next years team will miss the fine wrestling of Schwalb and Buffington. Cther members of the team turned in strong perform- ances to account for the teams victories. Senior Andy Payne filled in at 134 lbs. early in the season to help out the squad. At 100 lbs., Iunior Rick Iaques and Soph- omore Lee Silverstein picked up many key victories for the team. First year Iuniors, Phil Miller and Bill Rey- nolds, at 187 and 167, respectively, showed great prom- ise for the future as did Sophomores, Scott Brightman at 114 and David MacDonald at 128. Iuniors, Brad Croper, Andy Cohen, and Carl Shishmanian, showed much im- provement from their first years and will provide strength for next year's squad. However, this year's losses, unlike last year's, were mere two or three point deficits, which demonstrate the teams vast improve- ment. Coach Bill Grimes said, Having more depth would have helped us get the few extra points to win those close meets. We had some excellent swimmers, but not enough back-up to make the difference. All things con- sidered, we did very well. The team, indeed, did very well. Senior Tri-captains Ruth Berggren, Dierdre Anderson, and Denise Anderson, Iunior Carla Chiaravelotti, and Sophomore Karen Hay- den qualified for the Girls' Interscholastic Regional Swimming Championship. Each of the girls competed in the 200-medley or the 400-freestyle medley. Both of the relay teams set school records, and the 400-freestyle relay qualified for the finals. The following week, Ruth, Dierdre, Denise, and Karen participated in the state championships. They competed in the medley relay and the 400-freestyle relay. Karen competed individually in the 100-yard freestyle and she set a school record of 59.3 in the event. Diving was also a major key for the girls' swim team as Senior Erica Campbell displayed her talent through- out the season. Thus, this productive season was the result of a total team effort. 26 is 'C IP' if . . J . -fit X .. M... It has been a fun season highlighted by many sur- prises and lots of hard work and outstanding team growth and development said Coach Bill Crimes. The returning swimmers along with many new faces con- tributed to the teams performance. The outstanding captains David Samuels and Harry Raphael led the team. David took first place in his many events and Harry excelled in the backstroke and diving setting a new Newton South diving record of 189 by breaking the old record of 164. Ned Campbell and Chris Madden have been two of the team's most consistent swimmers, and will be helpful to next year's team. Two very devoted team members, Bob Goodman and Ted Leavitt. were also great assets to the team. Bobs main event was the back stroke, where he provided the team with the depth it needed. Ted Leavitt's determination and hard work have shown through in many difficult events. Other fine swimmers this year were promising soph- omores Mike Berwin and Mark Lipoff. Mikes tre- mendous effort paid off as his times consistently im- proved. Seniors David Pill, Pierre Sasson, and Steven Pilivan will be greatly missed next year. The entire team helped South achieve a respectable record in a very difficult league. Though the team lost a few close meets. Newton South often overwhelmed its opponents. David Samuels best described the season and the team spirit by saying, The team work and the members' support for each other are what made this season as much fun as it was. Dr. Stats At the beginning of this season the Newton South Boys' Basketball Team found itself in a difficult posi- tion. lt had to prove its strength following last season's dismal 4-14 record. The team had to regain the respect of the fans. of opponents, and most of all, of itself. The team, while lacking an abundance of talent, showed it could play with the best by using determination and guts. The Lions' offensive punch was led by All-D.C.L. center Mark Hayden. His strong offensive play inside and the outside shooting of Senior Captain Tim Hair- ston, Senior Mike Kline, and Iunior Mark Buchsbaum. formed a solid base for the offense. The defense was sparked by Senior Ieff Bovarnick and the rebounds were controlled by Senior Captain Mark Sullivan, Senior Craig Sumberg, and Iunior Mike Calvin. Next year's team looks promising with the return of Mike Kasten, David Hill, and Keith Harris in the back court and Mike Calvin, Mark Buchsbaum and Peter Kanellias at the forward positions. 30 .Jv 'W .J ' Q cw Q 1 2 i V55 ' l Tl St-1 -is S va 'XF sl .xx , Q Dip' gsm.: sf H izyfg, Q . l C o u nvav a 1 l ..?'? an-'iff' i 3 . li, 1, . , If , 7, -t .mf -1- , mf F 5' 'Kiwis QM5, t, M- 1- 1 Y -ff -7- 'W img 'ft' 5 ' - .,,- 1' ,-4 ' nf vi if t. With only four returning seniors, it took a few pre-season scrim- mages for the team to begin to gain confidence. The amazing shooting of Co-captains Michele Miller and Diana Houlihan, combined with the rebounding of sen- iors Laura Sacks and Kim Smith, started the team off with an impressive victory over Brookline. Also, the discovery of Patty Sullivan proved vital for the Lions. During the season, Newton South had many dis- appointing losses. Although the team did not have an outstanding record, it did have a rewarding season. The loss of seniors will hurt next year's squad, but with the many returning juniors and sophomores, next years season should be quite successful. my X7 x X' Y,- ff, , 1 it-1 First How: Sara Frim, Capt. Coach Sutherland's care- ful calculating before each meet almost always in- dicated that if everything were to go well for South, it had a good chance to win. Composed mainly of seniors. this year's team com- piled a 4-2-1 record. Throughout the season, Andy Ra- vech and Iunior Louis Dakoyannis ran noteworthy races in the forty yard dash. Mark King ran exceptionally well in the 300 as did Iuniors Paul Miller and George Croussis. Sophomore Mike Klugerman was South's num- ber one runner in the 600. Kevin Richardson ran con- sistently well in the 1000 as did Rob Fast and Matt Kelley. Kevin was also the team's finest high jumper and Paul added spark. Bob Partridge and Rob Fast were South's swift milers and Ieff Nottonson was the team's power in the two-mile. In the hurdles, lim Shulman and Creg Walsh did great jobs and Iunior Peter Cumes also was contributing toward the end of the season with some fine races. Bubba Smith and Dale Lewis pro- vided the muscle in the shot put. The season was quite a success. The team will miss the seniors for their spirit as well as for their talent. Although Newton South has always had a small track team, its motto has been, It's quality. not quantity, that counts. With this spirit, the Newton South Team came up with a 4 -3 record. The dedicated coaching of Iames Blackburn, who has helped Newton South excel in track, has been greatly appreciated. The team will never forget the hard workouts at Newton North from 5:15 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., nor will we forget Crazy Carlotta and Ruthie and Casanova Kevin. The team will miss next year its dedicated hard-working seniors: Hsuing, Sussman, Seasholes, Price, and Pickett. These qualities must be doubled when only seven girls are doing the work. Nevertheless, the Newton South Girls' Gymnastics Team built a strong and spirited group. To start a team with only one returning senion, Go- captain Lauren Kaufman, and three returning juniors, Ioanne Beatty, Carla Eknaian, and Michele Arons, was difficult. But with the addition of three new girls, Senior Co-captain Erica Campbell, and sophomores, Amy Scheinin and Lisa Schneider, the team went on to finish its season with a 3-5 record. Although we did not have a winning season, we felt victory whenever we learned a new trick or reached a new goal. Then too, any team with wonderful and ever-present coaches like Iudy Blanchard and Assistant Bruce King is bound to be a Winner in the end. King. 1 s This year has been an encouraging one for the New- ton South Boys' Gymnastics Team. The dismal 2-6 record registered this season does not reflect the tre- mendous gains achieved by the Lion gymnasts this year. The Team improved its overall performance by more than 20 points during the season, producing the best record in three years. The returning seniors worked extremely hard this season. Go-captains Rob Battista and Rick Nicolletti turned in outstanding performances in the all-around competition, most notably on the high bar and the floor exercise. Dale Stackhouse helped the team with his high scores on the pommel horse. and with his diligent attitude in the gymnasium. Senior ringman Rob Stein- berg also contributed to the teams success with steady scores on the rings and vaulting. Ioining this veteran group were eight new members who added a new dimension to the team. Rich Battista. Ieff Stevens, and Frankie Moreau turned in fine per- formances on the mats. Steve Goldman and Dave Haas. and Wayne Battle strengthened the horse team tremen- dously. And, newcomers Dave Comerford and Rich Richman competed on high bar, parallel bars. and vault- ing to give the team much needed help in those areas. With practically all of this seasons newcomers re- turning next year, the future looks even better. Each season shows tremendous improvement. The Lions came out fighting this year and startled everyone by starting off the season with 3 straight wins. In the previous 3 years The Lions had had only 1 win. In fact, the strong, quick, and aggressive play of this year's team led to a success not seen since the late 1960's. The team owed its achievements to the strong play of the returning juniors and seniors, and to the outstanding play of the sophomores. Returning for the Lions were Senior Co-captains Bob Mosca and Iohn Kotzen, Mike Wasserman, Kurt Schluntz, Greg Brown, and Mark Crodberg. Also returning were Iuniors Paul Aries, Russ Nicoletti, Rick Cramer, and Billy Kaye. But the biggest surprise was the tremendous play of the sophomores, especially Steve Mosca, Ken Fay, and David Cohen. In goal, Paul Aries played magnificently and provided the foundation for the team, while the defense, led by Bob Mosca, was stubbornly powerful. The offense, espe- cially the line of Mosca-Kaye-Fay, played aggressively and provided the team with the strength necessary to overcome opponents. lt has been a year of surprising success. And despite the loss of the fine seniors, this year has marked a turning point for hockey at Newton South. 36 F st How Sur Lfxin I pt Iindi W ll ir el Lushan Andy Ixfssler Larr Absnd Sfrond H w Penny Saltfr Su Mgr Liz Millfr len Sharp I iuri Harkftt Dm Hoffman Phil Small Third How S iron 7f,ic.hnf.r, Dirragh Houli in. Skiers saw more competition and a clearer view of each teams rank. South's team was very strong, led by Captains Marc Abend and Linda Weller, with many seniors in their third year, and lots of young fresh talent. Coach Abend was very pleased with the teams performance and the spirit evidenced in practice. The team had the potential and the enthusiasm necessary to be league champion. All it had to worry about was the weather. However, contrary to popular belief, the team had an active season with plenty of man-made snow. Coach Abend travelled in Search of snow and worked hard to coordinate the league and to arrange make-up meets in alternate locations. The team had a harder time convincing people that they had snow to ski on than they did winning meets. Ice, crust, granular artificial white stuff, and tough courses were no hindrance to the strong South racers. The pre-season conditioning exercises paid off for the downhill team which dominated the league. Unfortunate- ly, the Cross-Country Ski Team jogged only for their personal pleasure and health, as touring skis for use on grass have not yet been invented. While other people dream of sandy beaches and low- er gas bills, South's skiers THINK SNOW! 37 lirst low: Dawn Frinison Susin blcpikoff, Heidi Lohcn B'irb'ir'1 Kendill Po ook.
