THE HOUSES The brilliant yellow of Barry House shines at the intersection of Elm Street and Main. The house is named after Leoj. Barry, an administra- tive assistant, assistant principal and principal of Newton High School. Beals, the bright, light green house, is the second splash of color from the Elm Street foot of Main Street. Whenjtnhn N. Beals was principal of the first high school in Newton, he worked with one administrative assistant, two teachers and just 75 students, compared to more than 500 teachers and 2500 students today. Down the hall and color spectrum from Beals stands Adams house in emerald green. Enoch Adams was principal at Newton for twenty-five years, from 1897-1921, Palmer is the best house with the best stu- dents, the best teachers and the best housemas- ter in the humble opinion of housemaster Rich- ard Adams. The house with the deep blue walls and lockers is named after Irving O. Palmer, the first principal of the technical high school and then of the newly combined high school. The plum walls of Riley, the last house before the administrative deserted Bacon House, is spread out just in front of the library steps.
