North High is divided into tive houses, administrative units which shrink the school down to manageable size. The house system brings the administration closer to the students and divides the school into well-organized sec- tions. Each house includes tour tloors of homerooms and hundreds ot color-coded lockers. A housemaster's duties include running the house office, keeping up the house commons room and above all looking after the students in his house. Two guidance counselors work in each house, aiding students from their first arrival in school to their college and career choices. Housemasters and counselors are dedicated to helping their students find most opportunities at North. Each house has a council of students from the various homerooms. Councils work throughout the year, raising money for charitable causes and the annual house scholarships. tw. if M , in Y . Gs is s ,, IZ O xfnfifvfi :gf F' ., ,, A jf yi J, ,Aon if If, ,Qi 31.. . Dunham Assistant Principal Dan Malia Technical-Vocational Director Dr. John Strand, the new Superintendent of Schools, comes to Newton after working at various educational positions, including teacher, principal, and Superintendent of the Pelham, N.Y. system. Dan Malia, formerly housemaster of Fiiley House, is in charge of the entire Newton Technical-Vocational pro- gram. His job includes directing Business, Home Economics, and Work-Study programs across the city, especially at North where the departments are such an im- portant part of the school. Malia has dedicated himself to providing Newton students with a comprehensive and car- ing Technical-Vocational system. Atwood P. Dunham has served as Administrative Assis- tant to the Principal for thirteen years, becoming one of the most recognizable members of the North administra- tion. From the morning announcements to the afternoon activities, his reponsibilities are far-ranging, including schedules, grades, and graduation. Through all his work.
